It's almost time for an oil change. Besides the usually K&N oil filter and Mobil 1 5-30 (winter) I run. I figured I try out the magnetic drain plug. I'm wondering if it's any good. Has anyone ever tried one of these? I usually experiment on my CRX but no foul should come from this, and it was only $5 shipped.

What about magnetic drain plugs or magnets for your oil filter? An oil filter has the ability to filter objects smaller than the human eye can see. If you use a magnetic drain plug, magnets on the bottom of your oil pan, or magnetic devices on your oil filter, they do work, however, they are only holding particles that would normally end up in your oil filter anyway. There is no harm in these devices, however they provide no additional protection.

I read the quoted thread, but if that's really true, why does GM have drain plugs with magnets installed in many of their cars from the factory? Besides that, to get TO the oil filter, the oil/metal has to go through the oil pump. The magnet on the drain plug gets it before it gets into the oil pump.....
And yes, the ones I've seen in GM vehicles usually had stuff stuck to the magnet when doing an oil change.

i bought one off ebay for like 7 bucks shipped. the collects some metal crud between oil changes. The filters don't get all the fine metal shreds... for a few bucks i figure it can't hurt. If you have an auto tranny drop the pan next time you need to change the fluid. There is a round magnet in the pan. When I did dopped my pan (changed tranny fluid annually) the mag was a furry mess....

You can put an oil filter magnet that accomplishes the same thing. Take your old hard drive apart...the magnets in there are the same super powerful magnets that you can stick on the filter. However, if your engine is throwing big chunks, you'd have to slice open the filter to see what's coming apart. I use one and they work well.

It's worth the 7 bucks . It's better to get rid of that crap than to have it floating around.

There really shouldn't be much magnetic metal in your oil to make a magnetic drain plug worth while. The steel parts in the engine are not really prone to that much wear.
A magnetic drain plug in your transmission or diff is a MUCH better idea. Auto trans has a magnet in the pan already, and I can't remember if the manual trans has a magnetic plug or not.
