2001 EZ30D* or 1994 EJ22T
So I Posted awhile back about wanting to drop a 94 Ej22T into my 97 Brighton BK (w/ 5mt)but ran into the problem with finding parts and programming it with a plug in play kinda deal. but soon found out you need to do it the hard way and re flash the ecu and do it my way. Kinda left it since I'm in school, Friend just got t boned his 01 Outback with a EZ30D and I thought hmmp that might be easier to build since I don't have a turbo to deal with. So here I am asking which would be more feasible.
I'm looking for something:
-I can do myself I have a good chunk of Mechanical experience(which would be less time consuming would be nice too)
-Most cost effective I'm willing to dish out but if I can save a bit on one over the other
-I looking for only about 200-250hp range (anything its better than 140hp)
-I already have the EJ22T...Need to still buy EZ30D
-Need to keep 5 speed but willing to swap final drives(ie. centre diff, rear diff)
I hear I can't use the Outback ecu since it will look for input from the 4AE
So any advise/opinions/complaints/suggestions/etc is greatly appreciated!

I know this is an old post, so you may have already made a decision and moved on by now. But just in case...
There are a couple/few guys who have figured out what is needed to "dummy" the EZ30D ECU so that you can run a 5MT or 6MT. Read this guy's thread (http://www.rs25.com/forums/f145/t155496-dynes-1999-2-5rs-h6-ez30d-swap.html), for instance. I know I've seen folks talk about it on NASIOC in the big H6 thread (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1323800) there, too, so it's not just dyne that has done it.
I've been very slowly doing an EZ30D swap into my '97 2.5GT for over a year and a half. If you search for posts by me in that NASIOC thread you can follow my progress and see what things you'll need to take care of with your '97. Getting the engine in was pretty easy, but I've been taking my sweet time with getting all the accessories set up - new power steering reservoir with new hoses, "hybrid" A/C lines to use the EZ30 compressor with my A/C system, cooling system modification to use my EJ25D radiator, etc.

Hey Pat, what's the weight difference between the EJ25 and the EZ30? My wagon has over 250,000mi on the clock and I'm thinking a swap is in my future.

EJ25D vs '05+ EZ30R there's roughly a 70# difference. Quoting from elsewhere:

Engine weights, part I. '98 DOHC EJ25, all stock. PS pump and alternator removed (since I don't have either for the EZ30 yet). Belts removed. Fluids drained. Engine mounts removed. Clutch removed. Flywheel still in place (22-23# from what everyone says here). Everything else is intact - A/C compressor is still there, intake and TB, sensors, hoses, wiring, etc etc.
262#, so that puts the weight of the EJ25 at 240# (with no flywheel).
Today I weighed the EZ30R. Similar conditions as above - no clutch or flywheel, fluids drained, intake & TB resting on top, no PS pump, no alternator, AC compressor lying on top. The AC compressor isn't the right one, but it should weigh within a couple/few pounds I think.
EZ30R weight - 312#
I used the same game scale that I used to weigh the EJ25D 4 years ago. It's been dropped and manhandled since then, so I'm not sure it's in the best of shape, but I weighed myself hanging from it and it was within ~4# of my bathroom scale.
I think when I weighed the EJ25D I lifted it with a ratchet strap, which only weighs ~3#. I don't remember if I accounted for that in the weight above. Today I lifted the EZ30R with a 4-point chain hoist, which weighs ~14#, so that's accounted for in the 312# total.
Since the scale isn't perfectly accurate, I'd say that weight is +/-10#. Most of the guesses I've seen for the EZ30R put its weight at 50-55# more than an EJ25. Based on my admittedly rough results, looks like the difference is a bit more than that.
The EZ30R is still sitting in my garage on a stand, with the heads not installed, and I've installed an '01-04 EZ30D in the car. That has the significantly heavier aluminum intake manifold (vice the R's plastic one) - I probably weighed the two intakes at some point, but I don't recall what the weight difference was between them. Probably 10-15#, would be my guess. I'm pretty sure that 312# above included the heavy steel fuel rail covers that both the EZ30D and EZ30R have; I'm not installing those, and that's probably 10# of weight savings there, plus the non-AVCS engine doesn't have the AVCS cam sprockets, extra solenoids, extra cam lobes, bigger lifters, etc, so I'd guess I'm still in that 70-75# range.

Thanks!! I'll definitely go over to nasioc and follow your threads with the build and the links you posted to get an idea on time and cost. I like the idea of another turbo Subie in my stable, but that H6 would be a lot easier to install, probably more affordable, and totally more wife friendly.
