First off, the wagon isn't going anywhere. I'm the Don of the Wagon Mafia, after all. After 250k miles, it was time to switch it to DD status and stop the major mods (the main reason it stayed NA) and get a new toy. I rewarded myself after ending my last year of 160 mile/day commuting (down to 4 miles now, lol) with something I've been planning for a very long time, thanks to an old friend.

So, here it is.

2005 STi, aspen white.

Power:
Cobb catback
Invidia DP (soon to be replaced with a Cobb)
Injen wrinkle red CAI
Ecutek reflash (will move to Cobb when I change parts downt he road)

Stick:
Work Emotion CR Kai's, 18x8.5, ET42 with 245/40/18 Pzero Neros
Prodrive diff guard

Interior:
Tint, 5% back and 15% front (yeah.....)

Bling:
None yet, and likely to stay that way. The exterior will be getting toned down a bit.

Other stuff: Yakima racks w/ fairing, Clearbra on entire front.

I can't take the credit for getting it to here, but I can sure as hell change up where it's going.

What's going in the next month or so, depending on how much free time I have:

Tein Flex Mono w/EDFC
Cobb DP
Brembo slotted fronts with Hawk Ceramic pads
Pioneer 9800BT HU with Ipod integration
WC Lathe Works custom 6MT sphere shift knobs, white poly/aluminum, (to match the season)
Rota Formula Mesh, 18x8 ET35, hyper black, with 235/40/18 Azenis 615's (keeping the Works, these are just an experiment)
S204 dash
WRX sideskirts
Wingless trunk
V-limited lip
Little bit of underhood stuff I've picked up over the last few years (caps, hood struts, etc) and cleaning up and paring down the original stereo wiring.

So far the thing is fun as hell. Last time we dynoed it on a Mustang a few years ago, we were at ~265hp/280tq, so it moves a ittle faster than the wagon.

Better pictures will come as I get it cleaned up and the first round of mods on.

Funny thing with the Yakima racks...they look like mini spoilers. :)

White's my fav. color... car is going to look great no doubt.
I see the shop decals are already on!

Those are actually the old shop decals, my buddy never took them off :D

Cleaned up, and, more importantly, lowered (Tein Mono Flex, the new inverted setups, with EDFC)

I like it and all, but to me, it just doesn't have the cool factor that your Outback does :-(

It's certainly more common than the OB, that's for sure. I'm doing a little bit of cosmetic stuff to it to make it mine, and some stereo bits and stuff, but I'm not going to try to set it apart in a sea of STi's because I've grown up and I'm not going to sink 10-20 grand in pimp parts just to try to one-up other guys. I won't be able to achieve the uniqueness I did with the wagon with any other car easily, and I'm ok with that. I built a car with a stock motor that got recognized worldwide, had build chronicles on forums in languages I didn't even speak, and I took an inside joke with a friend (Wagon Mafia) and have people rockin' "la familia" worldwide, on every continent, and that's fun no matter what. No matter what happens with the wagon, I've always got that. I've had people tell me (not just Subaru people) that my car was an inspiration to them, or that it made them like wagons, or it made them see Subarus in a new light, and that's truly the legacy of the Hooptywagon; that it made a difference for people somewhere. I know tha'ts retarded, but I'm a car guy through and through, and I'm allowed to get emotional about cars

Problem is that as much as I love the wagon, and as much fun as it still is to drive, it's very, very old, and very, very worn out. It's got 250k on it. It's on its 3rd motor, 2nd tranny and 3rd rebuild, 5th suspension setup, etc etc. Many of the things like coilovers, though they were nice parts, were compromises due to the differences in the Legacy chassis. Running bigger, stickier tires, bigger brakes, and much firmer suspension mean that the last 150k is probably at least double that in terms of chassis wear. Even with tons of bracing, it's pulling itself apart at the seams. I can't justify a chassis teardown, seamwelding, caging, painting, rewiring, etc, for what still amounts to my hauler.

I've been around performance cars, and around Subarus, for over 10 years. I've seen how projects go, I've seen how swaps go, and to be perfectly honest, I wanted to start with a solid platform that didn't need a ton of work, even if it meant a bit more money out of pocket. It's no secret that I had an entire donor car for the swap into the wagon, a VF34 setup, basically every bolt-on mod around, ready to go, and I just never got around to doing it becuase I didn't feel like I needed to do it for my own needs, and I wasn't interested in doing it jsut for the accolades of others when I saw a better way to do it. I've seen too many customers and friends get too deep into project cars and then realize inherent limitations that discourage them or send them into a cost spiral trying to work around it, never to recover until they sell them for a tenth of their invested value. For the same reason, I wouldn't swap an old L unless I wanted to make it a caged track car. California sucks, emmissions suck, and dealing with heavily modded older cars isn't something I wanted to do forever.

I'll always have the wagon around. It's a great DD, it'll get maintained and keep all the mods, but I have one garage spot and it stands guard outside. I learned a ton of lessons with it, good and bad, and it's been fun, but it wasn't the car to build into something really quick, if for no other reason than that my attachment to it made putting a drivetrain into it that could twist it into a pretzel, or me around a tree in it, a really horrible idea. The STi isn't "disposable", but I certainly won't have the same attachment to it as I do the wagon, and if something happens, it happens; if something happened to the wagon; I'd be heartbroken and I know a lot of you guys would be there with me.

And now, for something completely different.

Wingless trunk is in paint now.

Makes sense man. I understand the emotional attachment to the OB, I've had my leg for ony 4 years and I can't imagine what would happen if it were in another accident.

Huffer

I'm down with the attachment to the car. My Impreza wagon received the same kind of accolades for being clean, tight and fun to drive. Totally reliable, solid runner.

It's still the only NA wagon in NZ that gets mistaken for a mean ass-out STi wagon. It doesn't help that there's a very similar TRACK-based wagon that lived a few blocks away. I'd get revved at every time I went to play golf.

STi looks clean - are you debadging at all?

sybir
08-09-2007, 12:26 PM
I'm leaving the fog cover and door decals untouched for now; I have another set of fog covers coming in that I might nuke the stickers on; the front of the car is clearbra'd, which means I'd have to take off the clearbra to get to those decals, and then reapplying it would mean the new clearbra wouldn't match the existing setup, that's yellowed a touch over the ast few years. I may relocate the plate to one of the fog covers; that was the intent of the new ones, so I wasn't hacking up my good set.

The trunklid has the SUBARU debadged already, just has the OE WRX and STi badges, and I'll probably leave those on that trunklid, as they see to belong there with the big wing. The wingless trunk that's currently being painted will stay naked except for a small shop badge, most likely. I'm going for a more subtle look, but not necessarily a sleeper, if that makes sense. Get rid of the big wing, but maybe toss on a black Mine's lip. Get rid of the swoopy sideskirts and run WRX bits that I think complement the lines of the car better. It's a white car with a big hoodscoop, fender flares, dumped on 18x8.5's with 245's.........there's only so much I can do :D

And man, is it nice having a white car. Even when it's trashed, it looks better than my beat-up black looks when it's just been cleaned and waxed, lol.

08-09-2007, 09:05 PM
lol, thanks :)

Put in context, the STi retailed new for only a touch more than my wagon did new. I also paid over 6k under book value for the STi....I paid, out the door, about what I would have for a loaded RS these days.

In my case, I got my money's worth out of the wagon, and jumping on this for ~20k was a no-brainer, especially since my shop did all the tuning and maintenance on it in the first place.

I can definitely see your point, Sybir. I'm in no way saying I wouldn't have made the same jump myself, and I think many of us would have done the same if we had the capital to go to a used car at that kind of deal...especially seeing as you know most of the history behind the car. It seems like a very solid buy to me. I just love the OB so much...it's one of the few wagons I'd actually like to have.

WRX skirts on, plate relocated because the stock bumper holes are stripped and my new plates almost ripped off on the freeway.....not gonna happen. Ricey, but it works.

Need to install amber sidemarkers this weekend, do some work on the Mine's lip, and have some other parts on order...

Took some pics by the house this morning, nothing fancy, but I still hadn't done nice picures of this car, and was up early when the light was nice.

Now that it's wingless, you need to go with a stealthy (as much as possible) FMIC and go scoopless for the total sleeper effect.

sybir
09-08-2007, 11:56 AM
It's a hoot for sure.

Any car I own has to be able to do it all. I'm not necessarily going to go ripping down rutted gravel with a street/track suspension, but dirt roads, snow, etc, are all a factor of where I live. I like the utility of a car that can run the gamut; this just happens to be a bit faster than the wagon

If a Subaru can't do it all, what's the point, right?

I think the big hood scoop is perfect for CA traffic... you gotta have some way to get people to "move, get out tha way...!"

sybir
09-08-2007, 12:00 PM
I'm not into the whole FMIC thing. Too much hassle in CA; cops love to pull you over for that stuff. Plus, a FMIC decreases performance on a stock-turbo car. Goes against my religion

Plus, Subarus need hood scoops, it's the way of the world :D

I need to replace the horns, too. They're the Indian supertones, and I'm used to the german ones. I might go to airhorns......not sure.

But yeah, it looks aggressive from the front (and just wait, there's another bit coming that will finish it off) and looks like nothing from the back, so I don't get messed with on the freeway......the wing was like a beacon, but idiots miss the scoop becuaa\se they're already past and not trying to rev on you or some other stupid shit. hey sybir, i'm thinking of installing a pair of supertones too. however, i heard from a friend who has them that they're somewhat directional, i.e., they're loud as hell if you're standing in front of them, but fade quickly as you move to the side. know if this is true?

sybir
09-09-2007, 11:48 AM
Definitely true. They're stupid loud, especially relayed, and the directional nature of them is the only thing that saves you from going deaf inside the car. Think if it this way; it's like a tweeter - high pitched directional sound instead of an airhorn's multidirectional bass.
If you ever want to hear what they sound like, have someone else hit the horn button while you stand in front so you get the whole effect.

On the wagon, my horns are angled a touch to each side (just a few degrees) to help the spread since half the time people are next to you when you're blasting your horns........heh.

They make a bugeye version ;)

It's got two mountign tabs, but I'm undecided; I don't get out on backroads like I used to, and from my experience with the wagon, anything mounted that low is going to get broken often.

If I do anything, it'll be the new Hella 500 FF driving patterns (even though it's a little low), but to be honest, I like the look of the front so much with no lights tha tI might jsut say screw it. I mainly wanted the piece to keep snow/ice from horking up the center of the bumper (splitters are cheap and a wear item when you're this low anyways), and I like the way it pulls together the front end.

Here's the same bar with lights (my buddy, Paul, who runs DBTuned):

And on a bugeye:

i know they make them for the bugeye. i've contacted a few of their "distributors" via email and never get a response on how much it cost. not a big deal as money's a bit tight right now. i'm gonna pick one up eventually though. i have a set of hella blackmagics that need something to mount to.

i'll prob make a cheap bar for the time being as i plan on running some night time time distance rally's this winter.

Wow, I haven't posted up any pics here lately.

What a surprise, wheels ;)

I love the Works, but they're mounted up with all-seasons as I was planning on a different set of summer wheels. Then a buddy cleared out his garage and I couldn't pass these up. Not the most baller rims, but they work on the car really well, and they're pretty light (<17lbs). Sparco NT-R's, 17x8.5 ET43 with a 245/40/17 Dunlop 901. Perfect for hucking around all summer until I decide on a different set of 18's.........though the 17's are growing on me again. Didn't hurt that I picked 'em up cheap, either.

Not an "aggressive fitment", which means the 245's tuck in beatifully and I get no rubbing anywhere in the range of motion of the suspension. Steering feedback is great, without some of the numbness I've felt running on wider setups, and the car is nice and chuckable. Works for me.

delicious. New wheels certainly show off the brakes. The spokes are down right anorexic.

Very nice man. That front guard really screams aggressive. And the wheels really do come as no surprise :-).

Added some new bits: new grill sans emblems, Cusco rear subframe brace, '06 STi rear diffuser.

Also washed the car (what a concept) and snapped some pics.

OK so how many sets of rims on this one?

sybir
06-12-2008, 02:25 AM
Ummm, 5, if you include the first set I bought for it before I picked up the car and put on a buddy's G35 instead, and a set of Weds SA-90's with r-comps that I passed to another buddy as I didn't need 4 sets of rims simultaneously for this car when I have 2-3 at any given time for the wagon...........it's a sickness.

The Formula Meshes I passed on:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/06/IMG_1276JPG-1.jpg

I didn't want to do Rotas on the STi if I could help it, at least not for regular-use wheels. I'm all for Rotas and rock 'em on the wagon, but I put a lot of money into suspension and stuff on the STi, and didn't want it to be "another WRX with Rotas."

That said, my stupid-cheap hardcore winter/emergency setup is a set of Boosts I picked up for $200 with tires, flipped the tires for $100, and mounted an cheap set of Japanese-market Yoko Icegaurds on, for a sum total of $200. Throwaway wheels. I have the Work CR Kai's waiting for fall with fresh all-seasons, and these are some funky old Japanese wheels that I scored from a friend who was clearing out his garage after selling his STi a few years ago......they're the only set I've ever seen on a Scoob besides his. i wasn't planning on another set of 17's but they work really well on the car.

I still think it's funny that someone who lives in California is talking about winterizing his vehicle

Sorry, it's just a bit humorous.

That being said, your STi looks badass with the brushguard there.

I'm still not sure how Tahoe doesn't count as snow.

This is the main road to my parent's house in winter, and that's just the foothills. Keep in mind I lived there for 23 years, and it's a whopping 45 minutes up the hill from where I live now. I'm at sea level, they're at 3000 feet and will get feet of snow at a time.

You telling me I should run sticky summer tires or half-ass all-seasons here? Screw that, I need something designed to work with ice.

I know it's a stereotype that CA has mild weather, but damn. I have family from Ohio that assumes I surf to work.....
Meanwhile, Sacramento in the summer rivals the east coast for miserable summer weather. You like 110 degrees with 80% humidity? C'mon now ;)

Buying a Subaru, and then slapping UHP summers on it year-round and not being able to get through chain controls, etc, just seems foolish to me. Here's my deal. If you can prepare your vehicle more effectively for performance in inclement weather, why wouldn't you? You make it sound like I'm mounting up a snowplow and trying to round up business, i'm just putting tires on that won't become useless below 40 degrees :D

rofl. The STi trunk and wing are in the garage, I just don't think I'll ever run them again. It's too much.

No I agree, my friend just thought it would be funny.

Sybir, you're talking to somebody who's been touting dedicated winter tires for a long time on the boards, I was totally kidding around, I know you guys have mountainous areas there that get snow/ice and having all seasons is just a crappy deal.

Wow guys, get a room. :-P

Sybir, those are some really sweet wheels. I've never seen 'em before. They work well with your front guard thingy...if i had seen a pic of the car without the wheels on, and a pic of the wheels separately, I would have thought it was a bad idea. Once again, you've shown your unique and good looking vision.

OMG new rims. The ROFL's have migrated. I still haven't decided on new summers for the STi, so thought I'd switch it up. Yes, she's a filthy whore. I think I washed her in January....maybe.

18x8, ET45. ALT 362. Whatever color they're called this week. Box said "s. yellow", I think it looks like sunset orange. Falken 912's. 235/40/18.
