I have a 05 Leg GT limited wagon and i blew my bottom end up. I am going to replace the short block and have the heads checked out. I am doing this all myself at home. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or things i should do better. I love subarus i had a RS before and love my car now i just figured 6000 bucks for some one else to do it, or like 2500 bucks and i could learn my engine.

Seems like you have a lot on your plate. If you have some cash...

Things to do:
-EJ255 short block to EJ257 short block
-Cosworth Head Gaskets
-ARP head studs or all ARP studs
-Knife edge port divider
-Multi angle valve job

you can throw money every which way when it comes to turbocharged EJ motors.

Good luck with the rebuild. Hope you have the FSM with all the torque specs and the proper tools.

Yeah I just ordered the short block and gaskets, and going to have my heads looked at and adjusted if needed. I will in a month of two new turbo injectors and the goodies. Thanks for helping me out if there is anything that you think i should do please chime in. I look forward to rebuilding it. I already have the thing basically taken apart and out of the car, but just waiting on the short block.

Basic idea

Price usually $200-500 depending if your paying for a reassembly. Also keep in mind that you have two heads. That involves twice the amount of work technically speaking.

Most people do not bother with this unless they have high power goals set.

But if you have the cash

It all depends on your power goals. ej257 block isn't necessary neither is porting/polish, knife edging, etc..

If you want 300 BHP then stock is fine. if you want 300 WHP then start dropping money.

Things like:
-high flow water pump
-high flow oil pump
-baffled oil pans and
-"Louvered Windage Trays" Prevents oil splash back onto the crank and proper oil return paths
-stainless steel lines
-welding a coolant sensor bung to the coolant pipe under the intake manifold
-high temp paint for the block
-exhaust wrap for your manifold, uppipe, down pipe.
-TGV (tumbler valves) delete .. not sure if the EJ255 has this or not..
-EGT sensors on each exhaust runner, if you really want to know the temp of each cyl.
-blah blah blah

There are 1000's of aftermarket options that can reinforce the internal and external components for your engine.

Set a goal and then buy the parts. Otherwise your just playing the bling bling game.

Please don't ask questions that you know you can solve. You have the FSM that I posted above and apparently you have some 9-book set that costs $500.00. Spend some time and research for yourself, there is only so much forums can do for you.

The FSM is not light reading, if he doesn't even know where the camshaft is on a motor he may never find it in the FSM.

That said, Gates, swapping a shortblock may be beyond your current knowledge.

I'd start with a Chilton/Haynes, and read it front to back and do that twice, then start on the FSM and begin methodically pulling the engine out and apart.

Actually I'd have taken the $500 invested in the FSM and paid a mechanic $500 to do it. But I'm lazy.
