Dead's 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
Well, I finally getting around to posting my Volvo project... She's not much right now, but hoping to have her driving by Summer...
I got it when I was about 7 years old from my dad. This was the car I learned with. I put a tape deck in when I was 12, and then primered it when I was 14 (it was bad... haha...). Some ask me why I'm doing a build of a 4 door Amazon Volvo. Most of it is because this is my vary 1st car, ever. the other was I got made fun of a lot in high school for it because it was an auto and a 4 door, so what better why to at back at people then make it look hot and fast as hell! I have had a love for these cars since I was a kid, but always wanted a 2 door and never got the chance. I'm now a 4 door nut for some reason and I ove the idea of killing an unsuspecting car, more so Honda's and VW's as I have felt a rivalry with then since college...
Originally it had a B20 2.0 from a 71 Volvo, with twin SU HIF carbs, and a 3 speed auto. I drove it like that till 1999 and then I got a 1970 Volvo 142 and then started restoring it.
The way I'm building it is for drift and track. 122's come in at 2400 curb wight, 300 under the Nissan S13 that the motor is from. I'm also leaving it a 4 seater so when I do have a family, we can take it church and stuff... haha
As it is now...
Exterior:
-shaved side trim/hood letters/hood trim/C-pillar belt trim/rear reflectors/fuel filler hole in rear deck

Interior:
-what interior? haha!!!

-Momo Coarse wheel (not installed)
-Front seats are to be determined...

Motor/drivetrain:
-1991 Nissan KA24DE twin cam
-Nissan 5 speed
-modified cross member/oil pan
-custom motor mounts
-Volvo 164 heavy duty motor mounts
Things on the to do or pending list...
Body:
-80% of body work is done, then paint
-shave rear license plate and lights on deck lid
-strip chrome on rear bumper, weld seams and studs, re-locate license plate to bumper
Engine bay/drivetrain:
-route intercooler piping for future turbo setup
-Cooling for motor
-wiring for motor
-finish rear trans mount
-build radiator and intercooler
-re-locate oil filter
-new driveline

Too much to list...

Re: 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
Thanks for the feedback! I'll try and get some new pics. For some reason I lost a bunch of them when I got my new laptop. I have more detailed ones coming...
As for the motor, it's a work in progress for sure! I just sold off my lifted Toyota so I should have some more time to work on my Volvo now. I'm hoping to have the shell painted by Feb, then I'll get back to the motor. Interior is a low priority right now, I want to drive it and I havent done that for 11 years now...
Oh, it will be painted gloss black for now...

I have 4 cars still and still have my 94 work truck so it's all good! The crawler was a money pic and I'm also going to be moving in the next 6-8 months and I didnt want to move a crap load of cars.
That and I had the 4x4 for about 6 years.... It was time to let it go... More time for the Volvo, Chevy, Subaru and the little truck...

Re: 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
Been a long time since I did an update on my Volvo...
Haven't really done much you guys will notice... just more body work.
Got 90% of the custom work done here on the rear deck. Still not sure what I want to do with the deck lid, but I can figure it out later. As of now I have all the work done shaving the fuel filler and reflectors. Next I need to retro fit my 1962 (early, red/red/red) lights. They have different mounts, go figure... Just need to weld new tabs on, so its just about an hour worth of work...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7806-1.jpg
Stage one body work is done on the left side, other then the driver door. The front fender and rear QT panel are ready for primer. The rear door is close. Driver door is FUBAR, but nothing a gallon of mud cant fix! haha!!!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7804-1.jpg
The right side is so freaking close to done! I got stage one of blocking done last night. I have a couple spot to fix, but everything is looking really nice! One more prime and block and this side should be ready for paint.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7807-1.jpg
Forgot to cover my motor bay when I painted my GT-B bumper... got over spray all over it... errrrr.... At least you can see my new intake system...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7808-1.jpg
Driver (left) fender ready for primer...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7810-1.jpg
Got it all setup with a Yakima rack also! I dont care what people say, I think it rocks!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_7813-1.jpg
This is the original motor I was going to put in, but the KA has more power for less money potential. Trying to sell it right now. Rare motor, but no one wants to buy thet damn thing! It's a 1974 FI B-20D if I remember right... They have 130hp stock with FI. 120 with twin carbs...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_6947-1.jpg
This is my dads car. Took it to a shop to have things fixed I couldnt figure out. To low tech for me!

These are the wheels that will end up on it at least for a while... These are on my work truck right now. OEM Jeep wheels (Moderns) They look ok... Offset is not too bad ether...

Looks like a sweet project! IMO you should add a tach to your gauge cluster too

It's gonna have a Monster tach somewhere...
And thanks all for the feedback!
-
Re: 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
^ don't do that! those never look good,
just use a small one in the cluster and add a shift light so you don't have to watch it closely anyway.. 5" tachs just look ridiculous...

I concur.
Do you need warning lights in the gauge cluster? You could raise the small gauges a bit and line them up underneath.
-
Re: 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
Well, I'm not sure about the tach yet... but I like the Carbon fiber gauges and I think thy only have the big tachs. I have thought about just doing a smaller tach and having a Shift Light on my column.
As for warning lights, I dont think I will need any. But the setup is not final yet. We will see... I even thought of some how incoperating an S13 cluster in, but the wiring would be a pain...

Re: Dead's 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
So, I got a bunch done just in the last week! I'm sick of my car not looking like a car and I also want to drive it! It's been down since high school grad day. That was almost 13 years ago!
I got a bug up my butt to get the body done. I might also be moving sometime this year and the car might not get cover, so the body needs to be painted.
My goal is to paint one body part a week till they are done...
Fenders and in the last priming stage done Tuesday.
Doors are in the last priming stage done last night.
Nose piece and air dam were painted last night.
Tuesday night.....
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9150-1.jpg
After 15 minutes...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9151-1.jpg
Blocked and primed... Letting the primer sit till next week to make sure all shrinking is done... Then block and paint...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9152-1.jpg
Right side doors have been removed... Never had the rear doors off! What a PITA!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9153-1.jpg
Nose and air dam all blocked out and ready for paint... The body work on the nose is crap, but the metal looks like it was ran over by an Ambrams.... It's all kinds of jacked up, I just cant afford the new part yet... So this will work till I can find a nice one...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9154-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/import...IMG_9156-1.jpg
All new paint! Too bad they have a crap load of dirt... but the main thing was just getting paint on them so they can go outside and sealing them to the elements...

How have I not seen this sooner? This is awesome!

Re: Dead's 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
It IS awesome. But as a former 244 owner, the body looks incredibly flimsy? I'm sure you have extensive plans for bracing right? Nice project!

Yeah, the front is a little flimsy, but I will be building a mild tube setup to make her stronger up front, I need to finish motor motor moch-up though. I still need to make sure when I do my turbo setup that the intercooler and piping will work, but I'm not doing that for a while. The rest of the car is super strong though, just the front needs a little strength. :smt023
I had a restored 1970 142 for a few years and I loved that car! I will always have a soft spot for vintage Volvo's, even the bricks!

I have played too much Gran Trismo in the past.... I have a hard time making up my mind what I want and dont want to let them go! haha!!!! Just think what my garage would be like if I was a millionaire! LOL
-
Re: Dead's 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE
dude i know the feeling. i have too many cars, and the only reason i ever sell anything is because i've run out of money and my desire to have money (aka purchasing power for more things!) overpowers my desire to keep the things i have. so then i sell whatever i care about the least. its always a hard decision.
