I am inside working! I have been spending the week cleaning lots of engine parts. I have had the flue all week and so just trying to get some stuff done.

Minor update. Long block is completely assembled. went to put the timing belt on this morning and the timing lines do not line up. needless to say I am pretty upset.... Now I need to order another belt and have to wait for it. I need the car by this weekend. I just need a belt though and I can't find just a belt anywhere....

Re: chevyman1968's '99 Outback HC EJ251 LB Assembled.

I got a Duralast/Dayco belt from Autozone for 37 bucks and ordered the correct belt for Gates. The difference between the regular dayco belt and the duralast/dayco belt is that the duralast has timing marks on it. The other one doesn't. Anyways I wouldn't suggest either. I am a solid Gates fan and if I wasn't need the car this week I wouldn't have put the other belt on it. If you look in the wanted to buy section I posted in there for the part # and it was answered.

So the engine is together and running? Or is it still on a bench?

The dayco I bought had the marks but the didn't line up with the driver side cams. They were off by a half a tooth. I won't recomend them at all

Engine is dropped in and I am just waiting for my Tomei belt guide. Got my tank full of 93 and ready to fire her up tomorrow. I was talking with 86Bratman and it is looking like my compression is around 10.8 to 11.1 to one.

Yup I sure did man. Thanks for the good deal and quick shipping!

Now if only my last parts would get here. The anticipation is gonna kill me. Its gonna suck that I have to wait 300 miles for my clutch to break in before I really get on her. I am going to Hagerstown, MD this weekend and won't have enough miles to do a pull on 81 yet.

Isn't Hagerstown a bit of a drive for you. I'm in Chambersburg and its still a 20-30 minute drive.

All assembled and runs really good. I am having an oiling problem right now and might have to pull it back out, but it has torque like nobodies business!

Re: chevyman1968's '99 Outback HC EJ251 LB Assembled.

Well, I have having a rather annoying major oil problem with my car. Its not leaking anywhere, but I am using anywhere from 1/2 to a whole quart of oil everyday. I get blue smoke when I accelerate hard, but not at other times. I have been sick for a week with the flu and just haven't been able to do anything with it. The previous owner of the short block said it burned 1 quart every 2-3k miles. Any thoughts on what the problem would be. I need to do a compression test... yes I know I do, but I haven't felt well enough to leave the house.

My guess would be piston rings, if it is blowing blue smoke..

Well, Last night on the way home from work my car developed a rod knock. So, I am thinking about taking her back to stock and selling her. I found a deal on a Impreza OBS local that I am going to try and pick up here next week. Same color scheme as mine, but its a '99 MAP EJ222. I should have a lot less problems with that car then these tempermental 2.5 liters.

I'm really sorry to hear that after all that hard work man. But regardless always make the best decision thats right for you. Will you be able to sell the car with the rod knock? or are you going to swap a motor before u sell it?

Re: chevyman1968's '99 Outback Knock Knock jokes are not fun

I had some parts on the way to build a new short block for it since the donor block had somewhere over 205k miles and with the rings being shot it def had a hard life. If I sell the car I will prolly do a mini part out and take it back to stock. I am going to tear down to the timing belt today and see if the timing belt tensioner is what is causing the knocking noise. If it is then I'll replace it. The car idles great and has no knocking at idle, but when you rev it quick it knocks. If you rev slowly up to redline there is no knocking. I am prolly gonna buy the impreza anyways just because I need a second car.

Dropped off my spare bare block at my machine shop today to get hot tanked and honed. Just got an '05 STi crank in the mail courtesy of 86bratman. Thanks man! Bought ej251 rods and pistons off of Lord Flash and am looking to start building the new block this weekend. Acl bearings all around. Keep posted. Once the car is running again I may start looking for a Forester XT. I need to step up to a new car because of driving a lot with work.

I started assembly of the short block now and am waiting on my oem head gaskets.

Really starting to look into a turbo swap that is similar to what Anothernord has done.

Done, inspected and back on the road again. I had to fight with my shop a little bit, but she is back. Now that the car has compression it pulls very hard! The tires will spin pretty easily through a corner.

Re: chevyman1968's '99 Outback short block assembly

Yup, I just threw the short block in last time without looking it over and the rings were pretty bad. When I tore it down the other day the bearings were fine. Turns out I had a really bad exhaust leak that sounded like a rod knock from my headers being loose...

Next thing I am working on is a custom AOS setup. Yes, I have brand new rings and stuff but I want to keep as much junk out of the fresh air coming in to the intake.

I also deleted the coolant line running through the throttle body because I want cold air going in my engine not air heated up by coolant. I am interested to see if this will affect starting in cold weather.

Also, I have been getting really decent MPGs with this set up. I am getting the same as I got before I switched to the high comp and I do not have a light foot.

Re: chevyman1968's '99 Outback High Comp On the Road Again

Wow haven't been on here in a while. I started a band with some buddys and have been pretty busy with that on top off not having work for over a month. She is still running awesome and has a very even powerband for daily driving. Not much else I am gonna do to her. I am starting to look for a 2.5RS coupe in ernest now. I need a good car to dd and a car to hop up so I can always have a way to work.
