    koiracer's STi swapped 98 Legacy (Widebody 85% done 10/6/14)

    Hey everyone,

I guess I have posted a few things about my build on other forums but apparently not this one. So here it goes.

Story: I bought this 1998 Legacy GT back in 09 for a couple grand to use as a project. It soon turned into a great daily for a number of years before her role went back to the project direction.

Last year I purchased a wrecked (rear end) 2004 STi for super cheap and proceeded to gut the living daylights out of it. Everything (literally everything) except brakes was transferred over to the Legacy.

Please, any questions or comments are welcome!!

Current Mod list: 296WHP/329WTQ on Cobb Plano dyno

    Power
    -2004 STi engine and ECU
-Cobb accessport with dyno tune on 93 oct. at peak 20psi boost
    -Cobb BCS
    -AEM cold air intake
-Lachute equal length headers and up-pipe
    -Perrin divorced wastegate catless downpipe
-Tomei full titanium exhaust for a 2006-2007 STi

    Drive
-2004 STi 6 speed with DCCD
    -Subaru OEM clutch and flywheel
    -1995 4EAT driveshaft

    Suspension
    -Springs from 2007 STi Limited
-Shocks: Front WRX (year??) Rear 2007 STi Limited
-Front & Rear 2004 STi swaybars

    Brakes
-Front: 2007 WRX 4-pot with Stoptech slotted rotors
-Rear: 2007 WRX 2-pot with gravel spec DBA slotted rotors

    Interior
    -2004 STi front dash
    -Sparco fixed back seat
-Fully stripped interior (the other 2 things listed are all that's there)
-Custom carbon fiber radio/ac delete panel with DCCD integrated

    Exterior
    -(current) 2004 STi silver BBS'
    -(in garage) Enkei RPF1 17x9.5 +38
    -GT-B Limited front bumper
    -JDM side marker
-JDM rear tail light with middle garnish
    -De-railed
    -JDM aero spats
    -Morette HID headlights

I have Varis wide body front and rear fenders on the way for me. They should arrive in February and the real fun begins making the car a wide body special (that explains the Enkei RPF1s.

Now the pics. First two are the car in its N/A glory (the silver STi is the donor car)

Now to the swap stuff, thanks to TNA Performance for a job well done:

Thanks, but I bought Dead91silvia's Morette headlights. I should receive Tuesday. Going to plastidip them black.

My immediate mods I am working on is a rollbar (not sure if I am going full cage) and the wide body. I think this will consume most of next year. But I will keep this thread updated on my shenanigans.

It seems that everyone who swaps their 2nd-gens does a dash swap, too. Is that necessary, or is it just because it looks good?

I can't really speak for anyone else, but the reason I did was to minimize wire splicing. Using the STi dash literally made everything plug and play.

With that said, we used the STi dash beam which caused neither of the HVAC units to work. So this car is without a/c and heat. But this car is a dedicated track/autoX car now. So it makes no difference to me.

Also, Legacy door cards won't fit with the STi dash. So really, it's in the best interest to use the Legacy dash to have an interior. But all the wiring would need to be spliced.

It was sad as an enthusiast to destroy it. I will try and post a pic of the rear. The rear glass was intact. The car was bought as a salvage at first by previous owner, so this second insedent was a "total" from the insurance.

And that's where I stepped in lol

NOW I know what car they are going on. hahaha....

Nice build for sure! I think this is the first time seeing the GT-B L bumper in red. I like it!

I think Reuben is sad though... he's not a fan of the Morettes, but it's ok. He will live. haha

    Re: koiracer's STi swapped 98 Legacy (11-25-13)

Sad indeed, blasted ugly lights, all I can think of is the damn Casablanca!

Side note though, I very nearly bought a red GTB limited when I was looking for beast, but didn't have the cash... I later decided that I HAD to have blaaaaaaaaaaaaaack. Funny thing is 2 years ago, I saw the very same car for sale again, for super cheap, with a blown big end, and I very nearly bought it again! But again, cash was even less avail... It was never to be...

    Re: koiracer's STi swapped 98 Legacy (11-25-13)

Thanks guys. (ah, the not so famous Casablanca Impreza) lol

The Legacy will be going through a transformation this spring, the Morettes will work well with the new wide body panels.

For the meantime I am going to just paint them flat black to match the grill. But when the car gets resprayed I will have the corners red and leave the headlight section black. To this basic affect:

So thank you to Dead91silvia for the Morette headlights. Got them yesterday in the mail. Did a small test fit last night. Very sweet looking, and will be better when black

HAHA! You know, If I could get all the parts, I would build one just because I can and have people wonder wtf it is and then make it fast. But man... They are fugly as sin.

Nice to see they got there in good shape. Cant wait to see them done up and the bumper back on.

I kinda had the same thought... except, rather than make a "good" Impreza into one, I'd try to get my hands on the real deal...
And instead of "make it fast," my thoughts went more towards "Blow it up." and "cleanse it with fire."

But a fast one might be entertaining, too...

And in no way do Morettes look even an eighth as bad as that. I like them.

Amazing job man. I'll definetly be following this. Did you use the sti steering column and steering rack? if so was there any issues?

Mark, thank you. But I respectfully ask not to answer questions on my behalf. You gave a very incomplete answer.

Don't get me wrong, I welcome conversation and input from people with experience.
The whole point of my thread is to make sure everyone's questions about my swap/build get solid black and white answers.

    To answer the original question:

Yes I used the STi steering column and steering rack. HOWEVER, the steering shaft from the STi was too long. So we had to cut about 2-3 inches from the u-joint section and re-weld where it goes in the rack.

But this is with the STi dash beam. Not sure if using the Legacy dash beam would effect anything, but I am sure you'd run into the same issue.
