    anothernord's '97 OBW, 12/8 - Fab projects, rally wheels

This is my daily driver. It's acquired the name Turbs. It's a plain old 97' Outback, a common sight around Fort Collins, Colorado, but this one is a little different. I've made it to be sturdy, fast, all-purpose, and all weather.

It's had lots and lots of different engine/ FI setups, so I'll list them all here, in sort of chronological order.

    First SC build (fall/summer 09)

    - Eaton M62 roots supercharger
    - 06 WRX TMIC
    - Turbo XS BOV
    - RalliTEK PP6

A few shots, see build thread link in signature for the whole thing.

A couple variants of this build:

    First, smaller pulley + TMIC:

    Experimental non-intercooled, relocated TB variant:

    Another non-intercooled setup:

FMIC version with relocated throttle body (awful, awful drivability; lasted about a day on this one)

Giant pulley with electric clutch, FMIC:

Then, the madness began: Twin charger? Yes...

My all-time favorite SC setup: TMIC with big pulley, and a sneaky intake design. I miss this.

    Then came the turbo setups:

    -JC Sports Turbo Kit, TD04

Another funky variation for the intake:

Then, I sold the turbo kit, and pieced together a WRX-style turbo setup:

-Megan header, TD04, stock WRX TMIC

    Bigger VF34:

Then, I blew that engine around 250 WHP on E85

So , I found a JDM EJ20H, and resealed that, and threw it in:

This is how the engine bay looks as of 12/19/2011:

    Current Specs: (1/2014

    Engine:
    EJ205/EJ257 Hybrid
    JE forged pistons
Stock crank and rods, ACL bearings
    Kinugawa TD05H 20G
    AP hard inlet
    APS TMIC
    TGV Deltes
    P&P exh manifold
    Denso Supra fuel pump
    FIC 900cc injectors

    Electronics:
Full 02-04 WRX ECU, engine harness
    Turbo XS knocklite
    Prosport boost gauge
    Innovate LC-1 wideband
    GM boost solenoid

    Drivetrain:
    06/07 WRX OEM clutch
    Exedy lightweight flywheel
AUDM dual range 5MT, 4.11 LSD
    TSK transmission snout sleeve
    Group N tranny mount
    Perrin rear subframe locking system
    Kartboy rear shifter bushing
    17x7.5 Sparco Terra, 225/65/R17 Nokian WRG2 SUV

    Exterior:
    JDM wagon tails
    JDM projector headlights
    -FX35 Retrofit
    JDM L7 Grill
    Ralliarmor mudflaps
    Stickers
Yakima lowrider towers and 48" crossbars
    Giant 06/07 WRX scoop
    Custom bumpers front and rear

    Suspension:
    Whiteline 22mm FSB
    Rallitek 22mm RSB
    STi swaybar mounts
    KYB GR2 struts

    Old Headlights:

New FX: Just one of two projectors!

    History:

I got her in December of 2007 from Nice Car Subaru in Fort Collins, a hole-in-the-wall shop that rebuilds and sells Subies. She had a brand new short block, a rebuilt transmission, new clutch, brakes, tires, and CV joints. Mechanically, it was basically a new car. This car has been through a lot.

    Any suggestions/comments/criticism/questions are welcome.

how come the car initially didn't come with hood scoop? i have the exact car as you, down to the color and year, and it has an OEM scoop.

I think it had been in a wreck before I bought it. That would explain the grill and scoopless hood.

How'd you get the stock covers to stay on your 500s if I may ask?

I took some fine steel wire, like <1mm in diameter, and looped it around the holes on the cover, then crisscrosed the wires around the back of the Hella and sort of just lashed it on. It hasn't moved in 2 months, but it does tend to rotate a little. I'm a fan of mechanical fastening, so I didn't want to use glue.

    Re: anothernord's '97 Legacy Outback

The car looks great, I'm glad to see a scooped hood back on it. I attempted to get my stock covers to fit my 500s as well but when they weren't staying I gave up. Yours look good though. I am in the process of trading my driving 500s for fog 500s and I might follow your method when I complete the trade. I like your headlights too. How much did you get that spoiler for? I'd love a wagon spoiler. eBay you say? I'll have to keep an eye out over there.

The body work was actually all done by a guy that I met through Nice Car Subaru in Fort Collins. He's just an independent guy that does body work, but he did a fantastic job for a lot less than the body shops charge.

    CV joint = mess

Don't really know how this happened, the joints are less than 2 years old. Looks like I'll just have to get the whole axle replaced.

haha in my impreza I had mine snap.. the balls fell from the cage it was pretty nasty.. because with the car in anything other then park (like neutral) the driveshaft would still turn and would make a horrible sound when trying to put it in park.

I never replaced the driver's side axle before I got rid of the car..

Just FYI... If you don't live on a 300 mile long dirt road, or haven't driven on a 300 mile long dirt road, and the boot hasn't been torn for 2 months (as in, it just tore a few days ago), you are probably fine with pulling the axle, cleaning it, packing new grease on it, and putting a new boot on it.

I should be putting down about the same as a stock WRX; 170 or so. Its very fun to drive. I haven't even tensioned the belt fully yet. I'll upload some new videos once that happens.
