Replacing Wheel Bearing - 1994 Subaru Legacy 2WD Wagon

I've got to replace the wheel bearings and everything seems pretty straight forward. I have one question though.

In my manual and different forums (this one included in the DIY - CV Replacement thread), it is stated that the axle nut (the one you torque to ~136 lbs) must be replaced when you put everything back together.

Why does the nut need to be replaced? I am having trouble finding a new one. The parts store's I have talked to all want ~$25 to special order and there is not a Subaru dealer nearby.

Can I get by with reusing the old nut?

The axle nut is notched with a punch or screwdriver after you install it - to prevent it being spun off. If you reuse the old one you run the risk of it coming loose.

If you bought a new axle, the nut is included most times.

I guess if you use some loctite on the nut and make sure the notch is redone it might be ok to use the old axle nut.

Sounds good, it's looking like I will reuse the old nut if I can get it off without tearing it up. Then next time I head to the city I can get a new one from the Subaru dealer for ~$7...much better than $25.
