Hello,

Just bought a 97 Subaru Legacy GT 5 speed as a winter car and am having a lot of fun with it. I would like to know what the difference is between the GT and a regular Legacy.

if you're driving a manual and stopped on a hill, it prevents you from rolling backwards while taking off

It's supposed to help you in taking off, if you know how to use it right. :p

A nice feature, our 1995 Wagon had one. If it didn't require massive modifications, I'd consider hacking it into my WRX, or whatever future project car I manage to come up with.

The hill holder maintains brake pressure when the clutch is disengaged. So if your clutch is down and you take your foot off the brake pedal (to get ready to give it gas) the hill holder's brake valve maintains brake line pressure as if your foot is still on the brake pedal. Once you start to release the clutch and it is close to being released, the hill holder releases brake pressure and off you go, without slipping backwards while you switch your foot from brake to gas.

A nice feature, our 1995 Wagon had one. If it didn't require massive modifications, I'd consider hacking it into my WRX, or whatever future project car I manage to come up with.

The system in the older Subarus is controlled by the clutch cable. It won't be easy to move it over the WRX because the WRX has a hydraulic clutch system I think. You might check out the system in the second generation Forester though.

I'm pretty sure my legacy is a hydraulic clutch.

Yeah and I'm pretty sure you don't have hill holder. At the time I don't think Subaru put hill holder in cars with the hydraulic clutch - it would have to be a different system.

I don't think I have it either, because it feels like any other car I have ever owned on a hill.

Hill Holder was only avail. on the "L" trims.
