Tranny and Diff question.

Hello all, I have a 1998 Legacy L 2.2 with auto AWD. Lately I have been getting a lot of whining from the tranny and when I looked in this forum and found out that there was a differential dipstick I checked it and found no fluid. Ok long story short the only tranny I can find is from a 97 legacy outback. Can I swap the trans and rear diff and be good? I don't mind doing that and I would like to know how much my mileage will be affected as well if at all. Thanks for the help.

As long as you match the tranny and diff (final drive).

If i am not mistaken the outback's have a 4.44 FD compared to GT's with 4.11 and L's/Brightons with 3.90.

Everything is direct bolt on however because this is a 4EAT I am not sure if the connectors are different.


Towards mileage.. The higher the FD the faster it will accelerate. For better mileage a lower final drive would be better. But if you choose the lower FD your acceleration will be slower.

Example: My old 4.11 GT would be at 60mph @ 2800rpm in 5th compared to my 4.44 OB that would be @ 3100 rpm
