my dumb question is: how does the 47 offset fit compared to the 55 of the current wheels?

It will stick out 8 mm more from the hub. Best way to see if this will cause problems is to get a ruler out and see.

also you need to factor in the width of the wheels, say going from et55 6.5 wide wheel to et47 7.0 will push the center of the wheel out by 8mm and outside lip by about 13mm and inside lip will be closer to the strut by about 6mm. remember when you go wider offset will need to be lower in order to fit how much lower will depend on widths of the rim and tire used.
i like the technomagnesio ones the most but thats just me.

From practical experience you can have up to an 8" width wheel with a 47 offset and still clear the fenders and struts on a BE.

unfortunately, i have to order them so i can't check...but they do take returns if they don't fit.

hopefully, this is the case.

I've had 17x7 + 48 before, They fit fine. I've had 17x7.5 +48 before as well, fit just fine. I'm currently running 17x8 +46. Even with the wider track up front (20mm wider than even B4 legacy's), I have no rubbing issues.

it's between the first set and these (but i see this style on lots of cars)...then again, almost every car has similar wheels.
