I'll add to the first post if you PM me a pic and so we keep it all together in one post. This can give an idea to new and current members on how to do their intake setups.

I just bought my first Soob, a 1997 Legacy 2.5 GT. And I have been having fuel efficiency problems. I have been going through a tank of gas with 80% being Highway driving and receiving ~200 mi. I have a J-bend CAI ready to install and planning on purchasing NGK V-Power spark plugs replacements.
What's the difference between CAI and SRI? Any pics would be appreciated?
And will I get performance gain with my project objectives?

Do you guys think it would be worth it to do something like the custom set up for the BE's. but delete the stock airbox and use an inline air filter, like a PRM or BMC CDA?
Reason

The COBB intake has an inline filter.

d1giPhux: if you have not found the coupler yet try lowes or home dept, in the piping section by the PVC pipes etc. There is a 3in to 3in rubber connector i have used before. It is a rubber connector with a piece of metal around it, but the rubber slides right out. Only about 4 bucks i think, good luck

ya it seems like it would be better if you used rigid piping, and then it wouldn't be ribbed eather.
Matty2Hotty
03-26-2010, 02:42 AM
Yeah but thats where the ribbed pipe comes into play making more power... Its proven to make the turbance in the air flow which is making more power then a straight smooth pipe. I cant find the link but it was proven and dyno tested before.
99gtlimited
04-08-2010, 07:37 PM
^^ you're a little off with that, but you're going down the right path
Ideally, you would use a pipe with dimples or small ripples in it. The ribs on your pipe (matty) piping are much larger than ideal. The purpose of ribs or dimples is to reduce the build up of a low velocity boundary layer of air, which creates drag on the air passing by it. You would do better with a larger pipe with a grainy (truck bedliner-like) surface on the inside. The tube you are using will create a bunch of low velocity pockets along a small effective airway (equal to roughly the ID at the smallest cross section).

^^^ Pish.... like you would know
I want to give this setup a shot with rigid piping. Might as well make use of that hood scoop.
Would it be worth it to dimple it or is it marginal?

I have a brand new in box subaru performance tuning cold air intake for an 05-06 legacy gt or 05-06 outback xt. I dunno if it would work on yours but it's available, I bought it on a impulse buy and I probably would only be able to use the cone filter out of it now that I got it out of the box and started to look at my maf sensor and junk. I got mine for like $150 on good ol' ebay. The destructions say it ain't California legal though.

Yes, i will chime in since i said i would come in and out of the legacy site still... I actually have 2 intakes, 1 from the shop that was their mock up one since they arent making them anymore i picked up 2 weeks ago and have 1 that the seller never picked up from me so i refunded his paypal money. There was only 10 made total. So if Anyone wants them let me know, 1 is complete kit and the other is just the intake box/lid... So piping will be needed. $150 and $100 just to get rid of them.

Does anyone think I can modify this wrx intercooler into a top mount AIR INTAKE for the new baja hood I'm putting on???????
You might be able to but why? If you're NA and you add an intercooler it's not going to do much for cooling the intake air and the inlet for the intercooler is underneath it. Plus where are you going to put the MAF?

What car do you have?
First off 00-04 legacys have EJ25, also they have a MAP, while earlier legacys have a MAF. so that one would probably not work for you.
I'm not sure about the second one as far as MAP/MAF but where the intake goes into the fender will probably not line up if you put it on a different model than it is intended for, though this probably can be fixed by making your own hole.

Ive been researching this whole snorkus delete thing and im kinda worried. Like when i took out all my stock intake crap did i delete the snorkus? cause everyone is saying its located inside of the passenger fender area, but i havent taken anything out of there. I just know snorkus delete can lead to the car running very rich. And i'd like to avoid that
What year Legacy? The older ones have a snorkus but I think they moved all the silencer plumbing into the engine bay for later models.
Deleting your snorkus will have almost no effect on the air/fuel mixture.

Newbie question. Recently got a 96 2.2 Subie Outback and thinking of adding an intake. What do you guys recommend? And what is a snorkus? (pardon the ignorant newbie) I saw an intake kit (can't remember where) where it looks like there is a low powered fan of some sort, making it sorta like a forced induction type of intake. Any feedback on those?
Thanks.

one of 3 different settups I did with just a nissan adapter plate redrilled for subaru and a $40 filter. the best was the MAF-adapter plate directly on the intake manifold, I had to cut holes in the MAF housing for the return lines and stuff but it worked and it was LOUD!! sounded soooo good and the filter was rite behind the hood scoop so I guess it was ram air or at least the air was cold.

prodriver1, I used to have a very similar setup on my old Outback. One way you can really clean it up is to find a Spectre 90 degree intake elbow from a Pepboys or Autozone and put that in place of the stock pipe you have. I used this elbow and my filter fit in there perfect and I tapped all my lines into the elbow with some pipe to hose adapters. It will just shoot 90 degrees right off the throttle body and still sit under the hood scoop. I'll try and find some pics of my past custom intake setups!

the filter sat right in the air path from the scoop. It sounded good but it would have performed better if i did all the hose lines properly. I used too small of tubing so it choked off the IAC. I ended up pulling it out.

Ya Spectre is the brand that the Autozones and Pepboys sell. They are your basic cheap intake, like the Ebay ones. You can even buy intake pipe sections and build your own intake. These are the 2 pieces I used in my intake in the above pic. They are plastic though, not aluminum.

its true:( mpg goes way down, it will start to studder at very low rpm on W-O-T, you will get a check engine light, you will loose torque. but the closer the intake to the throttle body the louder it is and boy does it sound good :smt023

I finally got around to installing my hybrid intake last night. It turned out great and runs great! There was a major torque increase in the low end and the top end gained a little bit of pull also. But the low end power now is great for driving around town. It is fairly quiet but has a more aggressive raw engine noise instead of the usual SRI growl. Hi guys, I've looked trough the hybrid set-ups and I haven't totally found my answers yet. Since my '06 BL is a bit newer than some of the shown models, I don't know what does and doesn't apply to mine. Here are some pics of my current stock set-up. I've put in red the 2 components I wanted to know what to do with. There seems to be an oxygen sensor as well as tubing leaving the box right before my manifold. What to you guys typically do with these? Also, I'd like to install a cone type filter with a heat shield inside the motor section not in the wing since we have a lot of water/snow around here and some of my buddies had some issues with those. Any suggestions on type and set-up I should look at?

I am working on piecing together a kit together for my 2000 from leftover 2.5" IC piping. Am I going to see the drops in fuel mileage and such as I am reading here for some? And, am I commuting a Subaru crime if I dont run those (i think 3?) rubber breather lines into the system?

^^ that is going to suck in a ton of hot air...
My intake setup is almost the same as the one you are comenting about. I eliminated the stock airbox altogether, hooked the PCV hoses and MAP sensor into the metal piping. Sounds much better, has more power than the stock useless setup.
Using ROMRaider on a 60*F day the idle intake temp was about 95-105* but the temp once moving more than 2mph was 60*F no matter the speed or the throttle load, even with the cooling fans both running. :smt023

The hoses that were in red are PCV hoses. Or Posative Crancase Ventilation. They need to be hooked into the new intake setup for the engine to run properly. In the first post in this thread, the intake with the blue hoses, the blue hoses are the PCV hoses.

Ok so by continuing to read, I should use one of the following:
SRI:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/05/legacy050725sri-1.jpg
CAI:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/05/legacy0507cai-1.jpg
Then combine it with a SRI from K&N:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/05/KNINTAKEpng-1.jpg
For the pipe to have the right lenght as well as being able to use the shield from K&N. Since my set up is N/A, I need to find a way to bring the pipe from the intake to the cone filter as well as being able to install the shield around it.
Or could I use the CAI set-up from Cosmo and directly attache the K&N cone filter at the end since it already has the opening for the MAF sensor.
Any other suggestions?

Sadly, (IMHO) it's too bad that's the sound you've got now. Subies sound best when deep.
With a boxer, that rumble is the sexiness, not the 'ricey' whine....
Sorry if it's an unwelcome opinion, but it's just that, an opinion. I'm sure with STi, and a touch biger pipe, it'll be uper sweet!
BTW, what size pipe are you running? Methinks for an EJ25, 21/4" is best, deff not more than 2.5" (which is also a stretch) with naturally aspirated!
I do like the treatments you've done, all things considered. :smt023

Wondering if anyone has any advice as to if/what kind of performance cold-air intake systems I can use on my 2007 Subaru Legacy SE 2.5i. Everything I see is for Impreza's and GTs. What gives? Anything I can use besides a replacement air filter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well I really overpaid for the piping(I blindly bought from Cosmo Racing, $100 for everything; crappy filter, vacuum lines, couplers, clamps and a sticker!!) Ive seen the cheaper options on Ebay where it is just the piping for around $30. I just used a plumbers coupler(3 or 4 inch, cant remember) to connect the pipe to the airbox.

i drilled holes in the plastic MAF section and used bathroom culk to glue the lines into it, i later made a catch can out of a soda bottle to vent the heads and the egr on that car was disconnected, it ran very well without egr rubbish being put in the intake,

I was considering something similar to this recently. As well as seeing if I can the stock BG piping from the torque box to the fender for a cold air approach. How come very few people run their intakes into the fender?
For instance; This is what I had set up on my Impreza EJ251, the pipe snaked through the fender, and the filter sat in the front bumper, which was very efficient and beneficial.
