Looks like a cheap and easy way to get rid of the amber look of the turn signals, without having to go for the more expensive white look JDM lights offer.

The pictures do look pretty convincing!

Although I would like to see it in real life to see if it actually looks as good. I have a hard time imagining that wrapping a yellow light wouldn't show somewhat of an orange tint to it when the sun hits it.

Also, the JDM ones are actually white for the turn signal, not red. So it wouldn't be a JDM replica, but would be an original and unique look just the same if it worked!

Even my JDM ones though, very few people even know that they are different! :( Only those who are familiar with them know. Even many Subaru dealers don't notice anything different! :roll:

The 2.5RS crowd has been painting the orange on their rear lights with transparent red paint for a while now. most just sand, mask off the amber, spray it with the red until they're happy, then unmask and give it a clear coat just to seal it. They don't look too bad done this way. Truthfully, I've been thinking about sanding down the niteshades on my car and painting the amber red.

I've read about the painting, however, I also read that with extreme temperature changes (like those here in colorado) can cause the paint to crack and come off within a season or two. I imagine this stuff would be about the equivalent of rockblocker tint. I admit the pictures look very nice, but I wonder how true the product really looks.

Oh and I know what you mean about the modding. Most don't know my wheels aren't factory, or the mudflaps, or the fact that it is debadged. I guess I like the lower profile mods. Its a shame though, because I think the wrx/sti crowd has an ego to them. They should be able to see a subaru and know its been changed, but its as if the older cars aren't worht modding, even the older RS2.5's. Its not that they are rude of it, but they don't notice the cars.

But as long as the car goes unnoticed, it goes unbroken in to. :lol:

Ahhhh.....I'd rather have the all clear than red. Thats my vote.

If you do decide to paint the amber part, it will fade and flake off. It'll still look reddish, just kind of crusty. I usually resand and reapply the tint annually using stain glass translucent spray paint. Cheaper than jdm's. :lol:

Legacy4life, I know JDM's are white, but I simply meant that people wanting to change the look of their lights could use this option, which is quite cheap to change the look of their tail lights, rather than purchase an entire rear light swap to JDM (lights and center piece).

$18 < $235

No its amber through and through. The sanding allows the paint to adhere. But the paint doesn't last long in extreme weather, so it has to be sanded down again and again and re-applied over and over.

damn, there goes that idea...

IMO, JDM tails look WAY better. I like simple color schemes, so the less variety of colors, the better. Instead of red/amber/white, its just red/white.

Reviving an old topic, because seeing some threads on NASIOC reminded me of this. I just downloaded GIMP GNU (www.gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org)) and chopped some pics of my car. You might remember the first chop, since it came from the photoshop request thread. But I brightened the yellow lights and I added the red turn signal in back. The second just has the red signal. I couldn't get the layering to where it wouldn't fill in the reverse light, so oh well.

I wanna add a little insight. I painted my tails on both my legacy and my integra. I live in Wisconsin and drive my Integra from may till september. Its been painted for 2 years now with no sign of wear. I drive my Legacy in Northern Michigan where I go to school. The climate is similar to Colorado, real nice then real cold. the paint chipped after 4 months. I did 3 coats red and 2 clear.

Good to know schlicker. I didn't really plan on doing the painting as I've heard numerous people having problems with it sticking. I also have a cracked rear light, so applying the film would cover the crack, sealing out moisture and hiding it.

Rock blocker offers a similar red film, but have not developed a mold for our cars; however, you can see that despite the orange signals, it shows as red on the 2.5RS's:

My brother put some of this stuff on his RSX, it looks great in the daylight, but at night, it lights up a little bit orange (yellow plus red filters on a red light)

OT: I hate the fact that USDM cars have red blinkers in the rear. It's inconsistent with the front of the car, and also the rest of the world.

I happen to thing US auto manufacturers are just cheap - they don't have to use as much amber plastic, and they don't have to provide colored bulbs.

case in point, why did everyone else in the world get amber sidemarker lights that actually work as indicators?
