Will 2.5 manual tranny work on a 2.2

Just wondering if the 2.5 5sp. will work with my 2.2. Also does this change anything with the rear diff. because im going to convert mine to lsd if it already isn't but im pretty sure it isn't.

yes the tranny will work, but the gears...??? Statgsr or jey or??? Can chime in on this 1.

yes they will physically bolt up, no issues there...

what kinda swap is going on here, are you swapping from a 2.2 manual to a 2.5 manual? because then you would also be going from a cable transmission to a hydrolic which will require additional parts.

rear diff will likely need to be changed out to match the 2.5 trans as well. pretty sure most 2.5 trans require a 4.11 while all 2.2s use a 3.9

Correct. The 2.2's all used the 3.9. The 2.5 had a choice between the 4.11 (1997-1999 were all 4.11), and the 2000 Legacy L had a 3.9, while the GT had a 4.11. The gearing in the actual transmission changed, so running a 2000 Legacy L trans on a 2.2 will REALLY suck, fifth gear will REALLY be too tall. It was too tall for the 2.5 SOHC. The 4.11 will probably be a nice ratio for that engine, especially if the rest of the car is a little lighter as well.

If you can get a 4.11 final drive gearbox, get the 4.11 rear diff to go with it. Only other problem you might run into is axles not mating up.

As was stated if you want to go 4.11 LSD you will need the trans and rear end to match. Now if your car is already a 5MT with the 3.90 gearing I don't see why you couldn't just use a rear end from an 02+ 3.90 WRX.

WRX was 3.545 rear diff (5MT). The 4EAT is rare enough that I don't think you'll find one, it is 3.9 IIRC.

WRX 4EAT has a 4.11 final drive, and is a bolt on affair if 4.11 is what you need. You're thinking about early Turbo Legacys which came with 3.9 final drive (both 5mt & 4eat) with only the 1991's having an LSD "for sure."

OP I would recommend avoiding the early Turbo Legacy rear diffs because 1. they're nearly 20 years old, and 2. the rear diff has male axle stubs so you'd need axles for that car as well.
