On to the pics! I've tried to put them in order, and add captions above them all. My goal in my mods are to make the car more functional and fun to drive, and just to make it my own in general. In the pics it's mostly clean, I detail cars as a part time job and while I love running it through the mud, I can't help but come home and hose it off. It's just a 'bad' habit. :lol: The beginning of the pictures start at my dad's place in DC, then we end up here in TN for the recent stuff.

My modding style is generally subtle, but tasteful and functional. I also have a '92 Chevy 4x4 pickup that is heavily modified, but looks completely stock, and sounds almost stock. Sleepers are my thing.

Then I couldn't help myself... I gots a mystery box! Notice the brand new Rex in our garage. It was my detail job for the day, and the owner had the Outback. So when Dad got home (he didn't know about it) I informed him that I went to the dealer and traded. He was like :shock: and then :lol:

These were inside! I took it to a dealer to get them done since Andrewtech couldn't fit me in (we were about to move down to NC). I had the dealer add H6 front springs as well. Dealer took THREE FREAKING DAYS to do it, and in the process, cut off my control arms and charged me for new ones. A quick call to the dealer's owner (dad's golf buddy) got me a nice discount, but I was still peeved. It came straight home from the dealer and got loaded on a trailer for the trip down. In the pic it has about 650lbs of stuff in the back.

JUST FYI: For BH owners, my header rubs slightly against the FSB over rough pavement or when the engine pitches a lot (revving). Dunno if this is normally the case, but I thought I'd share my experience.

Nice, an Outback was my first car acquisition as well. Be careful though, when the mod bug bites, it doesn't let go easily. You've got a good start so far though!

That would be pretty sweet. I've always been a supercharger guy, I like the ability to install in pieces without having the car our of commission (for the most part). My cousin has a Mini Cooper S JCW S/C, and I love it. Boost whenever you hit the pedal, and no waiting for a turbo to spool.

I'd have no issues with the mechanical/installation end, it's the tuning that I'd screw up. I guess I just need to learn more on that part.

If I had all my crap together I could probably do it in a summer. :razz:

Hrmm. Maybe a S/C H6 swap instead. I really love the H6, and it bolts right in... just add the 2001 ECU and you're good to go.

Nah, I sold it to a local while I was up there. Kinda wish I'd kept it to play around with different setups.

Are the Group N mounts model specific :smt017 ? Where's the best place to buy them?

They are not model specific, but you might have to reuse your stock top-plates. I did in my car.

You can buy each side individually, $60 a piece. I bought mine in person from these guys.

I think that when you're N/A, the best mods are ones that tighten up the drivetrain and suspension. That's what these cars are all about anyway; they're made to turn!

My thoughts exactly... you get much more bang for your buck that way. I was just unaware that the Group N mounts were somewhat universal. :!: Good to know! I'll probably get them after the Christmas... I just spent all my money on mom's present (some of the rebuild parts for her chevy small block :lol: ) .

It's kind of odd, my car handles better now that it's lifted and on GR-2's than it did stock. I guess the stiffer springs and better valving compensate for the slightly higher CG. I'm still pondering on the rear sway, everybody says the RalliTEK one is perfect for the spring setup, and makes the car very neutral. You can already kick the back end out with a little work slick roads (parking lots in my case... Imma not doin' that on a road... lol).

With the Foz.... :grin: I've had people argue that it has the same wheels as the Outback. It does not... they are painted a different color, and in this pic, are covered in brake dust. EBC Greenies = awesome cold stopping. Side affect? Insane dust. :-( Still debating on what to put on the Outback as far as pads go. Anybody have suggestions?

if you think EBC greens are aggressive and have a lot of dust...I would suggest an OEM pad to you. You're not going to get any tamer than the Greens for aftermarket choices. In fact, I was not too satisfied with them at all.

:smt017 The OEM ones are puny on this thing, even bedded properly (the dealer had no idea what bedding was?!). The 2000's have smaller front brakes than everybody else, and it definitely shows with stock pads.

My dad had Hawk HPS on his '07 OB 2.5XT before he sold it last year, and they didn't dust as bad as the greenies, and were much more aggressive.

I totally agree, and the thing that bothers me about the greens, is that their dust:performance ratio isn't good enough. I don't mind pads that dust if they perform like they should, but the greens do not. They're better than stock (for cold bite, which is what I really need in a rural area with lots of deer), but not enough to match the extra dust output.

I think I may just get HPS for it, if I can find them in the proper size. Some places that I'm looking don't show them for this model year. :-?

You have the same brakes as I did (10.7" rotor, 11.4" in the back), the front uses the same dual piston caliper as every other subaru since the late 90's to 2003 when wrx's and Legacy's switched to a different pad shape. Its the D729 pad shape I think. You can google to see a diagram of the pad and compare it to yours, there's only really 2 pad shapes you'd have to distinguish between. You can easily upgrade to the front 11.4" rotor of the Legacy GT's and WRX's, it uses the same caliper - you just need the bracket and rotor while retaining both your caliper and pad.

The HPS dust about the same as the green's, the greens just has a different color dust. I would try an EBC yellow (I think that's its a ceramic formulation but a more aggressive pad used by amateur rallyists) if you want to stay EBC, or HPS if dust is really that important to you. I wouldve also suggested axxis/PBR ultimates for the cold initial bite (really, you'll see just how lacking the Greens are when you try this pad) but they dust a lot, also Porterfield RS4 but again it has a little more dust than the HPS. Next up to that would have to be the street/track pads like HP+, Bobcats, or Porterfield R4's (what I'm currently using) but youre sacrificing some dust and noise to get really *good* brake feel and stopping power.

yeah its straight bolt-on, just search in the brakes forum, there should be a thread about it. Forgot to say if you are getting just the brackets, you'll need the 02-early 03 WRX brackets, the 04+ brackets are different. If youre getting the bracket/caliper together, then it doesn't really matter. Oh and cheap but decent rotors from autozone are like $35ea for the 11.4" rotor.

Yep, but you won't notice much difference other than more noise. Your OEM pitch stop works fine, and the real improvments come with the engine/tranny mounts.

Got it done this morning. Sounds very nice, and deep, but everyone else in the family does not seem to like it. :icon_frown: They don't quite get why one would 'ruin' such a perfectly nice station wagon. I'm going to get some Dynamat for the trunk to quell the complaints of the passengers. Doesn't drone, but it's a little too loud for them, I guess. :N_poke: It's quieter than my pickup by far, so I just don't get why they're complaining... they never complained about it when the truck had a straight pipe. :lol:

Last night we received about 2" of snow, and it is still coming down! Not much compared to other places I've lived, but it sure is nice.

I needed to run to the PO to drop off a letter for somebody, so I hopped in the BattleWagon, and headed down there. Snapped a few pics for your enjoyment. lol

Added some RoadBlockR sound deadening (like Dynamat, but thicker, and cheaper) to the hatch to deaden the muffler sound. Was a little loud. That, and stuffing the nooks and crannies with Poly-Fil made a world of difference, it's almost stock quiet on the inside, with less roadnoise. :grin:

Did an oil change, trying out a new filter. Fits fine, no leaks thus far. I took a sample for UOA, and got the results back. Not so great... looks like very high ring wear. Went out and checked the compression... sure enough, low across the board. Will be putting in a rebuilt shortblock this summer. :grin: I seriously thought about going with STI internals, and supercharging it, but I can't source the cash for a Baja Turbo hood and the paint work. Just too much right now. So, N/A it shall be.

And lastly, a video. Sped it up to 120% after the beginning to make it less boring. Nicely captures the way the car sounds on the inside, and shows that even a lifted, 4EAT'd, leaky-ringed, whale of an Outback can have fun. I was doing 45-55 through the twisties. Road surface there was sealed gravel, with some loose stuff on top.

Sweet lift blocks! I'd never even heard of Subtle until I saw that. It's just 1" right? They don't make anything bigger do they? And are you going to have to do anything to the steering or is the 1" "subtle" enough...

Subtle Solutions is a nice company, Brad started it making parts for Foresters, so that's how I know him. http://www.subtle-solutions.com/

Those are just 1" blocks, for the front (to level it out). All it should require is an alignment, which I need to do soon anyway. He supposedly has a 1.5" or 2" kit in the works, which will probably be released for the Forester / Impreza first (and earlier leggys?) and then for the newer Legacies. I've gotten a couple products from him for our Forester, and they are all top-notch (made in the USA, too!).

I don't normally talk about aftermarket companies much, but Subtle has always been great to work with.

In that sample it was Mobil Clean 5000 conv (5W-30). It has had conventional all its life (dealer serviced). That will change after the new engine this summer. Amsoil FTW (it's what we put in our Forester).

Mobil Clean 5000 supposedly has a pretty decent additive pack. It was the best reviewed conventional back when I was doing research on what to use. Not sure where it sits now.

Alright, so here's the plan! Getting started in about three weeks. :shock: :shock: :shock:

-Remanufactured CCR EJ251 (long block)
-STI Group N engine mounts
-Modded stock airbox... 3" intake system (who has a stock MAP airbox that they'd be willing to sell for cheap?)
-Re-paint engine brackets in wrinkle black
-Intake manifold in silver (re-paint)
-Install Subtle front lift spacers, get alignment

Overall, I'm pumped, but a little nervous. This will be my first engine pull on a Subbie. Need to see what kind of writeups there are on here about it.

Gonna keep the old long block, and build it up gradually. Not sure whether I want to go high-comp N/A, or put STI internals in and go (mild, like TD04) forced induction. Either way, when this original engine goes back in the car in 5 years or so, it'll get a 5spd swap as well. :grin:

I am his first student, and the first one to solo, so he was just as stoked as I was. So. Long story short.

After that last post you see there with all of the pictures of airplanes and awesome and stuff... Ludwig exploded. Like in a literal sense.

Thought I had a bad radiator. Replaced it. Wrong. Explosion again.

Replaced the headgaskets. Had the heads checked. Drove back to Kansas. Drove back to Tennessee. 11hrs into the 12 hr trip back... exploded.

SO WE HAVE A HISTORY HERE. EXPLODING OUTBACK.

At this point, I have to be back to Kansas in two days to start a new job. So I had to buy a new car.

Which brings me to Sora. Everybody say hi to Sora. There will be a real thread about her later.

Ludwig lived under a carport down in Tennessee for about six months, his future uncertain. I gave him one last bath, and bid him goodbye.

He was stripped of his mods, except for some suspension items. There were talks of selling him, but I couldn't bear it, and essentially begged the powers that be to let me buy him and transfer his title to my name. After months of legal nonsense, I was finally able to fly down, load him on a trailer, and begin the long haul back to Kansas. Saddled with over 6000lbs of Subaru and rental trailer, the Suburban made the trip nearly non-stop through the rain, ice, and snow, averaging 11.1mpg at 85mph. It was the first long haul the truck had made with a load since the engine rebuild, and it performed flawlessly.

You have no idea.... The car still smells like coolant sometimes. It happened once over winter break and I was left driving my old Chevy K1500 for a good part of the winter until spring break, when I replaced the gaskets. Then on the drive home the weekend of summer break before I started my new job... he blew up... again.

Wow...the number of engine blow ups you have had! I was following you on subaruoutback.org, and saw the update on here. Did you find out why your motors kept going boom? Or is it an impressive amount of coincidence?

The original engine had bad rings, but was otherwise sound. I didn't have a lot of time, and money at the time wasn't a problem, so I ordered a reman motor from Colorado Component Rebuilders. That's where the problems started. Within 10k miles, I was having issues with overheating, and they were blaming me for it (supposedly improperly bled the system, yada yada). After a while they just ceased communication all together. Horrible people to deal with. Later found out that the right head was badly warped, and they never fixed it when I sent the heads back to them to be decked.

I am atually now convinced, after seeing the amount of carbon buildup left in the combustion chambers after 10k miles, that I wasn't sold a rebuilt or remanufactured engine. The valve stems have horrible crumbling and wear.... and everything about this motor points to the fact that it is just a used junkyard engine, sold to me for $3500, tagged with a phoney warranty. Piece of crap. Eventually I'll be replacing every bit of it, maybe except the case halves.

Actually the next step is going to be scrapping all of it and STI swapping. I've reached that decision.

So in contemplating different ways to go with this, and different ways to go with my garage as a whole...

I had an order in for a BRZ. I lost my girlfriend of two years and decided "F-that, I'll trade the SpecV for a BRZ and keep Ludwig around as a beater" in my sort of angry frustrated with life sort of thing that I had going on there. (great sentence I know). Basically a pretty little white BRZ premium 6mt.

And then my roommate Anna and I somehow suddenly started dating (I'll spare you the story) and I got a new job, and the semester ended, and everything just sort of became perfect to the point where I can look at my future and see exactly where it is going. I'll be a pilot for the company I work for now, but will have to stay where I am for another four years or so in order to do so. I'm 99% sure that I will marry Anna. And there will inevitably be a family to follow.

Thus I kept checking the status on my BRZ and getting this gross feeling. Where exactly did it fit in?

Nowhere. So I cancelled it and moved the money aside for a Forester XT. Why? Fits kids. Goes faster than a BRZ. Not afraid of mud and curbs and general family life. The FXT would largely be her car, I'll drive Sora to work everyday, and keep Ludwig around as... well... Ludwig.

About Ludwig.

His tires are shot. I'm thinking sometime over the summer I'll run south and pick up his other set of wheels (some black forester steelies) and grab some 215-65-16 General Grabber AT2's to put on him before winter. Next I'm going to revise his hatch area... probably gut all of the carpet/floor and replace with wood decking and some tie downs, and figure out a way to get the sidewalls covered and protected. The hatch is pretty beat up from my tools/box and spare parts rolling around, and I'd like to have some tiedowns to secure things with. I also need to get him a new set of lights and a bar, and a new roof basket. He'll serve as the general backup and utility vehicle and will continue to romp around in the mud when we want to.

So there's that plan. We'll see what happens. I need to get more pictures of him up!
