Picked up this 97 Legacy 2.5GT in May 09.

I believe this car has a lot of potential and I plan to explore it. For me, this car will always be a work in progress. I believe that is what modding cars is all about.

Thanks for the compliments guys. It took some serious elbow grease to get the engine bay into shape. I am currently living in Hamilton, but I frequent Toronto and ssauga quite a lot. Originally I am from Toronto.

Kartboy V.2 short shifter and front bushings
-Love this mod. Shift throw is reduced a lot, yet I am not too fond of the added NVH.

Thanks. Looks-wise they look great. Functionally, they put out more light, but they don't focus properly (side effect of HID's in halogen housings I think). I have them aimed slightly down, so as not to blind other motorists. I would prefer to be running HID's in the JDM projector housings, but I don't have the money for that setup just yet.

I got mine off of ebay...a company called Helingkeit (German) or something. I have had them for 6 months now and haven't had an issue other than that the H4 bulb (BiXenon) doesn't put out a very effective high beam. They use another halogen filament for hi-beams. The better quality bulbs have one retractable xenon tube which simply pulls in for hibeam and out for low beam. I'd recommend looking for some reputable brands (Phillips, Volt, etc).

Thanks man. I am going to refinish and paint them subaru gold in the spring.

I saw a lot of testimonials from people w/ the Kartboy SS saying that gear change transitions are more difficult, but to be honest, I haven't had that problem. I greased the ball and the pivot really well when I installed it. It does take slightly more force to get into the gate, but the decrease in slop and ambiguity when shifting is more than worth it. Vibrations through the shift lever are amplified though; because the shaft doesn't have the oem anti-vibration shaft thing and the ball is steal and not plastic. I have been searching for a way to aleviate the noise created from this for some time now. Forgive me if I am long-winded. Here is a pic of the difference b/w oem and Kartboy:

Cool. That is what I am hoping. I've heard good things about the tanabes. I have an outback RSB lined up from arubus. Originally was going for a rallitek 22mm, but it was a little too much $. How was the stance with that setup for you?

I liked it for daily driving, some spirited hikes and snow drifting.... :grin:

I had 15's, So I never had any rubbing issues... However, I can't say the same (%100) for you as I believe the offset/diameter is a little different on those WRX wheels.

Nice, car looks good. I run the 2.5rs wheels, same offset as stock +/- 2mm, so rubbing shouldn't be an issue.

I started off removing and repainting the woodgrain trim and then I decided to paint a couple other parts to match. Let me know what you think.

Painted with duplicolor graphite/gunmetal metallic
-centre console (upper/lower)

Unfortunately they are sitting in my closet along with my wrx struts until I can afford to install them. I'll let you know when I get them on though.

Yeah, they don't make these for our cars. I've got 02 wrx struts, wrx tophats, and the springs waiting to go on. You don't need the wrx tophats, but they are stiffer than our old bd ones. I did some research on the springs before I bought them and the wrx guys love them. Nice drop, perform well, and they are not crazy stiff. I got some 3/8" saggy butt spacers and rear camber bolts as well.

wrx struts, springs, wrx front spring perches. Pretty sure they have to all be for 02-03 wrx or 04-07 wrx. Also rear camber bolts for camber correction as well as spring spacers for the rear to avoid saggy butt are recommended. You can use your old tophats, cept they are not as stiff and are probably a bit wornout.

Painted the exact same pieces in mine, and the exact same color too. Except I have a brushed aluminum gauge bezel. Looks good and non-ricey. :smt023

Off the line acceleration is quicker. 1st gear is dealt with much quicker. Rev matching is a little easier too. Install wasnt so easy for me... Had to pull the rad and impact gun the 22mm crank bolt off. In theory the install should be easy though.

Yeah, that could work. IMO wouldn't want to strain the starter like that.

I like the vent bezels but why do all the other parts look darker is it because there black to begin with or is it just the lighting?

Ohh I see. lol, didn't know what you were talking about. The car is OEM colour deep saphire blue. Looks almost black most of the time.

They are all painted the same colour, its just the light that makes it look uneven.Oh ok just making sure. Where did u get the paint? I just went to the local store and they had a color of dupli-color that said graphite and it said metallic on the can but it looked way darker.

I used what I had lying around after I painted my snowflakes. Its duplicolor performance wheel coating in graphite colour. Ideally it may be better to use a paint meant for plastic not metal, but with good prep I think its fine. This is the stuff I used:

I got mine at Canadian Tire, but Im sure most autoparts places would carry it.

I removed everything. You can't spray paint inside the car. That would make a big mess. Plus, you need to remove the pieces to get into all the nooks and crannys.

PF Grounding Kit Impressions:

I wanted to give it a couple days of driving before I came to a conclusion about the impact of this mod. Let it be known that I also cleaned all my stock grounds while installing the GK.

After driving in a variety of conditions I have to say that this mod definately made a difference in terms of what it is suppose to do: to smooth things out. One thing I can not stand is bucking when on and off the throttle in 1st and 2nd gears. This symptom has been significantly reduced. Throttle response feels more precise and transitions between gears are more fluid. Also, my idle has smoothed out a little.

Places that are already a PITA to be in (parking lots, bumper-to-bumper) are less of pain in the ass now. I'd recommend this mod as it is relatively inexpensive (especially if you DIY it) and easy to install.

I wanted to post some updates on my ride:

1) This Sunday my suspension setup will finally be installed!
In case anyone is interested:

2) Dismounted and sold my summer tires, now time for refinishing, painting, and new tires.

^^These were done in duplicolor gold. I haven't decided yet between grimmspeed or duplicolor mainly because I am not sure duplicolor gold is made to be a wheel paint (i.e. handle high temperatures due to the brake heat). If anyone has any info on this I am all ears.

-I plan to go with a 225/50/16 or 215/50/16 tire. I am looking for a wider effective tread while keeping rolling radius close to stock.

I'll keep you guys posted on how everything works out.

Thanks Chuck. You are right it was a long time in the making, but it was worth the wait. This setup feels great. Composed in the corners, yet compliant on rough roads.

For the paint, maybe you should go Grimmspeed because they have the exact BBS gold and it looks great! I might get the 6 spokes, but no time to paint at the moment.

The speedlines I was going to buy was sold the day before I went in to the store to buy them, sigh. Still looking for summer wheels, going to need them quick. I dont have a set at the moment! :( Let me know if you see anything...

That sucks about the wheels, that was a killer deal.

When it comes to the paint, I've been looking at pics and I find grimmspeed comes out a shade too dark for my liking...kind of a bronze/gold colour sometimes. The duplicolor graphite I painted my winter wheels with has held up really well and I like the way their gold comes out with a white primer. I think I am going the duplicolor route.

Sherwin Williams can color match any shade and mix you some automotive paint :-D But if you looking for rattle cans good luck. The shade on the lid never matches the dry result.

My car died on the highway yesterday. :-( After an electrical diagnostic from one of the only mechanics opened on Easter Sunday, it was found that the "big three" wiring from alternator to battery is shot and was causing fluctuations in voltage output. This slowly fried the battery. Currently I am sourcing out a new big three wiring harness as well as fighting with Canadian Tire over the extended warranty on the battery... :smt013

I am waiting for good weather and time to paint my summer wheels. They should be on in a week or so.

Looks beautiful! I picked up a set of 5 spoke RS rims for 350 and I got them powdercoated at the TSC group buy, putting them on monday! They dont have that "gold" touch to it, its more mustardy colour but under the sun its beautiful!

Nice find on the wheels. I was considering the GB powdercoat. Instead I went the cheap route and did it myself. I'll have them on by Friday with new tires. Found a great deal on Fuzion Hri.

To answer your question, yes I used duplicolor clear to seal the paint. I want to make sure this paint lasts as long as possible.

Coupla' small things..

1. I had my Alignment done a few days ago. I had the camber settings dialed in to the specs recommended in the alignment thread on SLi.

2. I picked up some Nokya 7k halogen bulbs for the oem fogs. Even with better bulbs the light output is still garbage, probably the fault of the housing.

Those would be awesome. I was thinking of going the cheaper route and picking up some wrx brakes. Im not sure if it is worth it though. One or both of my front rotors are warped, so I get the annoying brake pedal pulsation at highway speeds. I've tried re-bedding them in to no avail.

You think the wrx brakes would be a worthwhile investment?

02-05 WRX use 2-pot brakes just like your GT. 06-07 WRX used the FHI 4-pot brakes painted bright red. If you want a simple replacement go with WRX/GT/OBS 2-pots.. Or just get re-manufactured calipers. Usually $75 CAN with a core return.

Yeah, I knew they were 2 pots pre-06. I thought the extra rotor diameter of the wrx setup may improve braking performance, but I'm not sure it would. Increase in unsprung weight and such.

The GT brakes perform adequately for my driving, yet the rotors are starting to piss me off. You think it is worth resurfacing an entry level drilled out rotor? They may just warp all over again.

I'v never seen a drilled rotor resurfaced/machined. You can try it.. If you want a set of used rotors that have some life on them i think I have a set.

I love the interior panels man. They look fantastic. I really need to dull mine down. Too bright and ricey. the finish on them is flawless too, so its gonna suck to sand them down. lol.

The wheels look fine though, i approve. :smt023 I wouldn't redo them for bronze at all. Just my 2 cents.

How do you like the RS seats? My leather is SHOT on the drivers side. I'm considering them or getting the stockers redone with grey suede inserts.

Car looks great so far though. and the engine bay (i know youve heard it a million times) Is so CLEAN! And i want your buddies s2000 interior. :smt007

Thanks dude. Im still a little on the fence about the wheels. They do 'pop' nicely with the car, I just think it may be a little too much.

As for the seats, if yours are on their way out I'd definately pickup some wrx/sti or RS seats. Having the extra lateral support makes a huge difference in comparison to stock. You feel much more in control behind the wheel. I got mine for cheap from a guy who was throwing an sti interior into his RS.

Nothing significant to report, just some pics from the cottage and an open question. I have been contemplating what more I can do in terms of relatively cheap power mods. Currently its a toss up between:

a) Grimmspeed power package (IM/TB spacers) OR

b) Magnaflow metallic spun HFC (Part #59955..i.e 2.25") I am currently running one budget universal cat and an 18" resonator. I feel like the HFC will complete the exhaust setup and hopefully yield some small gains.

Any opinions you guys have are welcomed.

Hi, sorry for the delay. It literally took me 20 minutes to install. I used 3M heavy duty mounting tape and garage door bottom. I plan to reinforce it with some angle brackets when I get the chance

I found a good deal on some wrx fitment brembo rotors and Hawk HP+ pads to complete the upgrade. I've driven about 500km since I installed them and they are definately an improvement over stock. The HP+ pads that came with them bite very strong once warm, however they are a LOUD. I may switch to HPS come winter time.

I learned that perrin endlinks aren't the best if you see any kind of winter. The spherical bearings in them tend to bind. I may try to trade mine for some kartboy or whiteline ones.

I would have ordered from Reason, support the site and all, I just know how difficult it is shipping large things and I've been burned by UPS here once before.

I installed my rear bar on Sunday. Installation was more complicated than expected. All I can say is if your planning on going for a whiteline, go for the one that is made for our cars. The WRX bar required a lot more clearance than expected. It is not as simple as bashing in or notching out the bump in the sparetire well. This bar required that the spare tire well be pushed a good 1-1.5" up and away from the bar. I felt pretty guilty hitting my car with a rubber mallot. Either way it did the trick.

Impressions:
I have it set to the middle position (24mm) and the back-end is STIFF. Definately notice a difference in the corners. Lane changes on the highway are lightning quick. It didn't produce the amount of oversteer I was hoping for, though.

USDM cleanup/shield mod

-Anyone with the usdm fogs knows that the light output is abysmal. Removing the shield greatly improves light output, though the beam pattern loses some focus. Either way it is a free and easy way to get some more light onto the road without blinding other drivers. I may post something in lighting if people want to try it. I will post some pics of the output later.

I picked up a GC steering rack with low km for cheap. According to Tibor at Qrack, the gc rack is quicker than the bd one and the whiteline bushings should stiffen things up as well. I should have it in by next week sometime.

I had my local shop install the GC steering rack. Everything was plug n play according to my mechanic.

Impressions: The most apparent thing is steering feel. Steering is heavier. I am not sure whether that is due to the rack or the harder bushings. Overall there is less play in the rack, though I can't say that it feels much quicker than stock.

I paid 80 for the rack itself. Install is a lengthy process, roughly 4 hours labour at whatever your shop charges/hr.

If you are looking for a noticeably quicker rack, definitely go for an sti one. From what I've read modifying the sti rack to fit our cars isn't that difficult. I can't say that the GC rack feels much faster, though on paper it is.

How many turns from Lock-To-Lock compared to stock?

Sorry for the slow response

The new rack is 3 1/4 turns lock to lock. I never checked the old rack. I tried looking up ratios for stock vs. gc with little success.

A weekly wash with wheel cleaner usually takes care of it. After the break-in period I don't find my pads shed that much.

The next meet has not been decided yet because one just passed, it'll happen in a couple weeks or so...

What pads and what wheel cleaner do you have? Im almost due for new pads but I just splurged a lot recently so I'm broke! haha
