Anyone know how subaru measure their valve clearance using the interchangeable bucket sizes?

or knows the spec for the ej205 valves? A 02-05 wrx FSM would be tits

If I can remember, I will look it up while I'm at class today. Hopefully AllData will have this info.

greenspeed: you have pm

Setting the clearances is easy, and should be done with the heads torqued down on the block and the cam cams properly torqued (trust me, they will change when you torque them down, and don't over-torque the front caps).

Measure the current clearance with a feeler gauge, then measure the current shim or bucket thickness (depending on whether you're using the 02-03 style shims or 04-05 style shimless buckets). Add those together to get your total, then subtract the desired clearance to get the new shim/bucket size.

I take it from reading the forums that shimless buckets are massive win compared to the expense of shims. How hard is the conversion? I will be building a set of EJ205 heads to go on my WRX, including cams, valves, valve springs, and want to do away with shims!

the ej205 heads use the buckets already they don't have shims

Weird, didn't know in 04 they went with shimless buckets. I have a bag of buckets my buddy gave me. I will have to make sure I have the right ones. Thanks again for the pm. Is there a benefit for having the cams set at a tighter clearance? i know the margin is .02 +/- so setting at .06 on the intake and .08 on the exhaust?

Well the only ones that were off were the exhausts on both sides. I was only able to get them to .008 with the buckets I had, and figured she was good enough.
