I have a 97 legacy 2.2 Auto. im looking to swap the tranny for a 5sp. What will be the easiest solution to this. Or if there is a post already about this could you provide a linkt o it please. i just read one but the guy had a manual already. Just looking for some advice. Also i would like it to work with either an ej20 or a ej 25 as i plan to swap the motor later.

There are a few threads about this in the transmission section... but basically you need the MT, the pedal box, the clutch assembly, the clutch kit, the shifter assembly etc. There are some bugs to deal with as the ECU in your car + harness is expecting an auto TCU to be present - otherwise you'll illuminate the Check Engine Light.

Your motor swap will work with either transmission - it honestly might be simpler in the long run to swap in the tranny when you swap in the motor, that way you will be dumping the AT harness and your stock ECU and run the WRX/STi ECU in it's place.

well i think im going to just keep the auto actually because i just found a 1st gen legacy turbo motor yesterday for $400 for engine and ecu. otherwise he wants 650 with an auto tranny but im just going to keep mine since it will work. but i may swap the tranny later! is there a major difference in power between the stock ej22 and a 1st gen turbo motor. also on the motor the turbo has been upgraded to a wrx turbo.

I think I posted most of the wiring fixes from when I swapped my 97 Leg from AT to 5 spd. In addition to everything Huffer mentioned, grab the ECU from the donor (if it's also a 96-99 2.2), you'll also need the front half of the driveshaft and you need to determine what ratio rear diff you have.
