stupid trans intall mistake. advice?

so, i finally got around to lifting that trans from the 00 outback.

got it lifted into place...almost.....

got it onto the guide studs and noticed my dumbass forgot to check for the little pin in the side of the case on the mating surface.

so now i have one pin in the block, and one pin in the transmission....and there they sit staring eachother in the face. :smt011

how are these supposed to come out? are they tapered? or will they slide out either way?

ide really rather not back it off the guide studs, but if i gotta, i gotta.

ok...so i backed the trans off a bit so i could just punch out that pin with a punch and hammer.


but ill be damned if i can get that trans to mate up. feels solid at about 1/2 inch gap of the mating surfaces.

im starting to winder if the little noses on the tq converter are different?

im tempted to put the nuts on the guide bolts things, i have them sticking out about 1/4 inch and trying to tighten them down and see if the trans will suck itself up to mate. but im worried about breaking something.

ideas?

ok...so maybe the tQ converter isnt indexed, or set all the way in... ive backed the trans out about 6 inched and been fiddlin with it tryin to see what the issue is.

anyone have a spec on how far forward of the mating surface the tq converter should sit? or maybe someone has an extra trans laying around they could measure?

i looked in my service manual and couldnt find it.

Measure the distance that the flex plate sits back from the rear of the engine block, that's how far the TC tabs should sit in front of the trans bell housing. I think it's about 1/2"

2.5's and 2.2's use a different size flex plate, so depending on your project and source you may want to check that out.

I've found the best way to ensure that the TC is fully seated is this;
1-Use a screwdriver as a "crank handle" in one of the threaded tabs
2-Turn the TC clockwise a few rotations
3-Push the TC up and in while slowly turning CCW slightly
4-Repeat 2 & 3 a few times untill it is in all the way

ok, got it all figured out, apparently when i indexed the converter the first time, that little circlip behind it came loose and wouldnt let it sit all the way down.
