how hard is it to fix?

well since i didnt get the xt6 ive been looking and ran into this she still has it the only thing is the timing belt broke so does it have bent valves? wat else would i need to fix? for 500 bucks i think its a steal, i found a diffenent 2.2 liter in the junk yard can i take out the valves and just swap them? the one in the junk yard is like a 95 sedan http://fresno.craigslist.org/pts/1488988476.html

ive read somewhere that the 2.2s are non interference engines, so valves shouldnt be bent. if its just the timing belt, thats an afternooner.

Now, that is a STEAL.
2.2's are non interference engines, so just replace the belt, and bam.

Now, it may have been an idler which busted as well. But, the car may not have been maintained all that well either. So, you probably want to replace all the seals and idlers, waterpump, oil pump while you are in there. Hell, even if you do that, the car still cost you under $1500.

I just said above, 2.2's are non interference, SOHC engines. Valves are fine. It really shouldn't take too much to get the car running.

It's a 2.2l its one of the most reliable subie motors. And a dime a dozen. Easy fix and great commuter

Hard to say. I know the Phase 2 SOHC engines are interference engines (just had an 03 Impreza in the shop with a broken t-belt). But, even if it did bend a valve, those engines are so plentiful, I'm sure you could find one cheap, and as long as you can install it yourself, you could be into that car for around a grand, maybe less.

I'd certainly snatch it up.

+1 for non interferance engine. You are good to go with a timing belt. That should have the Gen 1 EJ22. Those crazy Gen 2 EJ22's are interferance engines, but have a little higher compression (10.5:1 I think....). They came in the '99 Legacy California edition. Lol I have one... It is MAP not MAF.... I think the Impreza got it in '98. Lol long way of saying you are golden. Lol

no 98's were the same at the BD gt's 2.5 DOHC 99 the impreza went to sohc, and the bd stayed dohc to continue to have wonderful hg's

well im gona go look at it today, wat should i look for? i now the main stuff but wat else goes wrong with these engines that i cn look for? im gona buy it today and see if i can barrow my dads truck n trailer and get it home ill have to wit to work on it cause its raining, i cant wait to get that thing up and running

Besides the broken T-Belt, check for all the pulleys and idlers in the timing system. Check for leaks, especially on the valve covers. Other than that, check the normal stuff. The EJ22 is a work of art! If all the other pulleys are good, slap on a Gates Timing belt for about 80 bucks, and drive around in a sweet looking OBS with an excelent engine. 25+ MPG FTW!

The 96 had valve lash issues that just made noise, but that is really it. My 2.2 had a failing oil pump and still ran (still will actually) and got 25+ mpg before I swapped it. Keep us posted.
