I have been looking through junk yards looking for a replacment engine for my 95' LSi. I found a motor out of a 97' and I began to pull it but then noticed the exhaust ports on the head are quite a bit different. My question is what years did they change the head design? And what years of Legacy or Impreza engines are compatable with my 95? Also if any one knows of an engine for sale that is cheap in the midwest area (ohio). Thanks.

Hey, this guy is in Traverse City. Has free shipping, but they are 100% remanufactured. New just about everythng. I am going to help him get a profile here so he can be a vender. Here is the eBay profile. He is always building a few EJ anythngs.... Lol Subaruguys is the eBay seller name. Here is the link.

You could always swap your heads onto the newer EJ22. That way you retain your exhaust ports and stock header. However, if you just run the later model engine, you can bolt the header that comes with that engine to your catalytic converter and still be good to go.
BTW - if you're looking for a regional board to find some locals to help out, www.lersoc.com (http://www.lersoc.com)

Hey thanks for the heads-up on the local site.
I thought about swapping the heads but that means I'll have to buy another set of head bolts, head gaskets etc. :-( I was checking on some parts while at work and if I can get them cheap enough, I may just try to rebuild it. I'll pull it later on this week and see what kind of trouble I got myself into.
Thanks for the ebay tip, but for that price I could buy myself another Legacy. That is my other problem, not a whole lot of coin to spend.
Well at least I now know I can use the later style block on my early heads in case I have to. Thank you all for your help and suggestions :smt023

^ you wouldn't necessarily have to get head bolts, its pretty common practice to reuse them even though it is recommended to replace them every time. Friend of mine owns a shop that deals with a lot of subarus. pretty much told me he has never replaced oem bolts with new ones on a rebuild and has never once had a problem because of it.
Yeah 95 I think was a special year for the EJ22 as it still had the dual-port heads. My 98 had single-port and I haven't stumbled across an EJ22 newer than 95 yet that has the dual port.

1995 was a weird year for OBD as well. 1995 was a pilot year for Subaru OBDII, and IIRC, they didn't have a fully featured OBDII system. I don't think the standards were fully ironed out by the time they manufactured the vehicles in 1994 for the 1995 MY. Personally, I'd stick with a 1995 motor, or at least 1995 heads, put a different bottom end in.
Mixing and matching OBDI and OBDII causes some problems sometimes. :p

True that, I've seen a couple OBD-I 1995 Legacys, but most I've seen were OBD-II.
OP, assuming the plugs are the same, 1995-1997 Legacy motors will work, as well as Imprezas from those same years. 1998 is sometimes considered a phase-II engine design for the EJ22 where the heads & some electronics were changed (then again, subaru still had leftover engines and shells for sale in 1998 using the previous plugs, heads etc). If you have OBD-II (will say on the underside of the hood) then a 1996-1999 EJ25D (it's phase I) motor will also work. That's what I did. Where do your engine's plugs go to, straight back to the firewall or through the drivers side fender?

Well I do appriciate all of the help on the matter. It has gotten pretty cold here now so pulling an engine out in a frozen lot doesn't feel very appealing. I originally purchased my Subie for only $600. I gave it two more extra years of life it wouldn't have gotten. Had about an additional $1,000 in parts into the car. I have decided to take it to its final resting place at the local Pull-a-Part. Drove it most of the way there w/ the rod nocking and the oil light coming on quite a bit. The engine finally gave up about a half mile from the salvage yard. It was towed the rest of the way by my friend's Ford Ranger.
So I fixed the heat in my Jetta and will be driving this through the winter. I am sure going to miss the AWD. :smt010 On a lighter note my finances will be in bettter shape next year, so I will be looking at some replacments to my demised Subie. I am looking at the Subie BAJA or a VW W8 Passat wagon. I can get both right around the same price. Both have AWD. Would prefer the manual trans versions of both of these. I will start looking for these this coming July.
Once again thank you all for the support and knowledge about the Legacy vehicles.

Shoot man. If you'd posted for help over on LERSOC there'd have been 4 guys in your area with garages and hoists to pull the engine and fix it for you.
