Hey guys I'm sure this thread been posted or someone had already ask this question in another thread but here goes anyways.

Car: 1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon
Engine: EJ22e
Question: What is needed for me to swap the EJ25(Phase ll) into my car. I'm trying to get the entire motor and just stick it right in there. I'm sure its not plug and play and might have to be some splicing involved but what else is there that i need.

Thanks, and sorry if I wasted for space if this thread has already been made and answered

Peter.

from what i understand there would be many wiring issues with the ECU's as well as going from a MAF to MAP based system.

all for the extra .3 liters on a P.2 (correct me if im wrong) SOHC motor.

why not just go with the phase 1, 2.5(again correct me) DOHC motor, which should be pretty much plug and play.

OOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRR keep your 2.2

and if you go for the swap, can i have your 2.2?

Thanks for the info, the only reason why i really want to go 2.5 soch is because the 2.5 dohc seems to be not as reliable. But it may come down for me to get the dohc. And for the 2.2 i might keep it just for spare just in case the 2.5 blows when i ever get it.

There is always the possibility of doing a hybrid setup with the 2.5L block mated to your stock 2.2L heads, keeping the ECU and wiring the same.

Hmm, that sounds like a good idea because i just read an old thread on rs25.com.

This is xMOSHx(Member from RS25.com) hybrid setup:

Ok ok ok here it goes.
My set up is as follows:
97 EJ25D block. Standard rebuild
93 EJ22 Heads. Big PNP, 5 angle valve grind
98 EJ22E OBDII Intake manifold
Delta 2000 Grind
EJ257 Head gaskets
ARP head studs
Greddy Emanage
Stock fuel pump
STi Side feeds.
NGK G-power Spark plugs gaped at .025
Borla UEL Headers
2 1/4" Exhaust
Short ram intake
With all the math I should be running at between 12.3 to 12.5
As it stands right now I can't go over about %40 throttle with out the clutch slipping. there is enough torque that it gets really sketchy in the rain. Don't let anyone tell you that this is stupid it is truly a way to lots of power. I also run this set up on E85. E85 is between 105 and 110 octane and is good shit. I still have a pretty conservative tune in the car and I can dust WRXs.

I'm not looking for great power gains just a little bit so I can have some fun.

Is this setup with boost?

Nope, he intended to build it for n/a. Thats where i want to go as well. Oh quick question. Is my 95 legacy ej22e phase l or phase 2? Just curious.

Keep in mind this will higher your compression ratio and you will have to use premium fuel

In most cases you can not run a 2.5 ECU with your 2.2 harness. End result is a 2.5 running 2.2 fuel maps.. Not the best option, but end result is reliable and drivable with no major issues or CEL/MIL's.

You also have to take into account that different years run different evap systems.

i was thinking of running the stock 2.2 ecu since im not changing the heads

I did the swap with a 2.5 DOHC into my 96 legacy. It was plug and play (other than needing the exhaust manifold from the 2.5). You mention reliability problems with the phase I 2.5? Well Subaru issued a recall on the phase II (sohc) models for blown head gaskets because of the unusually high number going bad. I've been around the DOHC models for a few years now, and I haven't seen anyone's head gaskets go a second time (using the updated subaru part or the nice MLS Felpros).

I'm sure there are a few who had that happen, especially if the heads weren't planed (if needed), the mating surfaces prepared and heads torqued to spec CORRECTLY. Interesting tidbit: because the HG's are thicker for the DOHC models, the heads have to deform quite a bit more (from overheating repeatedly) before they will leak than the SOHC models.

One more thing, is your 95 OBD I or II? (trust me, they came both ways that year). If it's OBD-I, that will be a bigger ordeal to get either 2.5 running right (ie. Not running super rich).

wow, thanks for that info. My 95 is Obd ll so i'm for the swap =). Its just that i cant seem to find anyone letting go of there dohc motors, i see more of the newer ej25 being tossed around.

No problem Peter. If you'd like you can use a newer SOHC shortblock with DOHC heads, and sell the SOHC heads. Good idea anyways because you have assurance the HG's are in good shape, and it's much cheaper to have heads shipped than a whole motor! I hear that the compression is bumped up a little bit this way, just like using EJ22 heads, but the dohc ones flow quite a bit better - for your supporting mods like the cams idea. It would still be plug and play in this combination.

oh what, someone had an ej251 laying around here for free but i wasnt able to snatch it in time, but in the mean time ill be getting a dohc block from someone pretty soon. Finally i could start saving and building!!!

Ironic, I'm doing the opposite. I have a EJ25D, and I may be swapping in an EJ22E.
