so right now i have my wastegate plumed back into the exhaust, wat do you guys think about the sound of an open wastegate? any sound clips? i have a stock wrx turbo so it has a small wastegate hole wat sound would that make if i opened it up? just curious

I assume you are talking about an "external" wastegate. EWGs are great for controlling boost with no creep. There really isn't a need for one if you aren't experiencing boost creep or aren't maxing out your stock turbo. And yes, they do tend to be quite loud.

no i mean taking the tube from the wastegate and leavin g it open instead of routing it back the the exhaust

really really loud, basically once the waste gate opens you're running an open manifold. Take a 350 chevy and run it on straight headers, about that loud. it's intense.

better accuracy (targeted boost) when dumped to the atmosphere(I dont know if that depends on how big the turbos are).. thats based on my experience with my poopra.. but very loud when its open...

but on a td04 there is no point. if you're stock internals you're opening at 6psi regardless.

From what youre describing, it will be like an external wastegate; youre dumping exhaust gas out of the exhaust tract (ie the pipe). The only thing I would caution is to at least have a small bit of tube to route the dumped exhaust away from anything that doesn't like a lot of heat or exhaust fumes.

i might do tht, ill take a before n after video see wat one is best

I take it youre still using a stock DP? The stock flange with the flat metal right against the wastegate is just asking for a hole to be drilled into it I guess

yeah, i just want to see wat it sounds like i wont leave it like that.

well for one thing youre going to have to figure out a way to seal the exhaust when the wg is closed, because in any other situation besides the wg being open you essentially have big exhaust leak with the hole right above the flapper (remember that there's no divider between the outlet and flapper on an internally gated turbo).

USDM WRX uses a BCS, so unless it's messed up, it shouldn't open until 13.5 PSI. :smt017

I wouldn't hack up a downpipe. I would go with an EWG, especially if you're planning on getting something larger in the future. ;)

Yeah I'm not not visualizing how are you going to do this on a stock TD04 without introducing a permanent exhaust leak. There is no isolation in the discharge flange of the TD04:

So I'm not sure what you mean when you reference the "tube from the wastegate". Wastegate exhaust and the exhaust from the turbine ram into each other in the discharge flange, even before the downpipe.

Any hacking you do to the downpipe is going to create an open EXHAUST, not an open wastegate

If you're looking to hear your wastegate just disconnect the midpipe from the downpipe. You'll hear it loud and clear and your exhaust will at least dump under the driver and not all over the engine bay

There are downpipes available that have a separator that goes between the wategate and the turbine exhaust. I doubt it would create a prefect seal though. It has a separate dump tube that plumbs back into the exhaust further down the downpipe. I think the OP has one of those, and wants to hack the smaller tube off, and leave it open.

Ah so you are referring to divorced wastegate downpipes. I guess we need some more info from the OP about what DP he has and what he is wanting.
