So I have a 2001 Legacy GT Wagon and I know the OEM wheels are 16''x6.5'' and I am looking on Craigslist for a set of steel rims and snow tires. I have found some awesome deals for 15'' sets; I know the 2001 Legacy L has 15'' OEM...

Anyone know if a 15''x6.5'' wheel will clear the calipers on the GT?

I'd appreciate any insight.

Thanks!

If the 2010 Legacy has the same size calipers as the previous Legacies, then no, it will not. The last year of Legacy that would use 15" wheels was the 2000 Legacy L, in 2002 all Legacies got upgraded to WRX size front brakes and "H6" rear brakes too large for 15"s.

He's talking about 2001 GT vs 2001 L.

From cars101.com:
http://www.cars101.com/legacy2001.html#2001%20specs

Brakes: all are 4 channel anti-lock disc brakes
10.7" vented front disc with dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.
Tires and Wheels:
L sedan and wagon 205/60R 15" all season with steel wheel with hubcap
GT sedan and wagon 205/55R 16" all season with alloy wheel

So, a 15" Subaru wheel should fit. The GT model simply has more room under the wheel for the caliper as it has the 16" alloy.
As long as your overall rolling diameter of the 15" wheel + tire = the 16" wheel + tire then you should be good to go.

ALWAYS check your fitments before buying. Takes an extra half hour but is worth it.

Holy cow, where did I get 2010 from?

Didn't the GT get upgraded brakes? Or did they not do that until 2002/2003?

pretty sure GTs had 276mm brakes until 02. You should be able to tell just by looking at them. If they're smaller in diameter than the rear brakes, 15" wheels will fit.

Yup, that's my quick and dirty way to tell too.
