Hey all,
I have a 2000 gt legacy. its transmission has just died, i am wanting to convert to a manual instead of putting another auto in.
question is, can i put a different year gearbox in or does it have to be the same year as my car, eg 95 into my 2000???
Also, does it have to be a legacy gearbox or will a wrx or rs fit???
Confused,
Thanks, Mel

any EJ series trans will bolt up to any EJ series engine. thats the beauty of subaru. how ever that being said, the two problems i see is the front diff is in the transmission, so if you change the trans you will more than likely need to change the rear diff because the gear ratios would be different from the front to rear. particularly wrx transmissions. they have different final gear than legacys.
second problem is with almost any major swap with a subaru there is a wiring difficultys. it would be alot of work.
besides all that converting auto to MT can be a big enough task, why put more difficultys ontop if you dont have too.

anyways.. thats my 2 cents.

You need to match the transmissions final drive with that of the rear diff. All that means is that you must take more components from the donor vehicle than only just the transmission.
Please refer to this thread from now on regarding this topic.

i checked into the final gearing on your car tho automatic should have a 4.44, the manual trans has a final drive of 4.11
and it seems as tho the only cars that came with a 4.44 is an auto. so you'll more than likely need to get the diff aswell

Jdm ra 5spds were 4.44 and you could get dccd. Wiring won't be bad on that type of swap. Just going to be annoying getting the new consel along with clutch components

ok so i dont know much about cars, only the basics!
I know of a ej20et gtb legacy gearbox, has a 4.44 diff. so, someone said that any ej series trans will go into any ej series engine, sounds like this one will go in?

as long as the rear diff final gear ratio is the same. you should double check to make sure your car is a 4.44 final.
i belive the you can find that information on the side of the transmission or on the rear diff. the more clutch parts you get from the donor car the better. but youll probably wanna put a new clutch plate in while u have the trans out.
and if you have any questions on the swap just let me know and ill give you the best advice i can.
