Welcome to the club, you might want to make an introduction post in the New Members section.
First of all Ver2 was not the 1997 model year. Secondly, yes your trans will fit. Thirdly, those motors were not offered here in the US, where is your location? You might want to fill that information out in your user control panel.

So to sum up, you have a 89 Legacy RS (BC chassis) with an Impreza GC Sti engine in it (actually 97 was one of the years the JDM STi engine was available. First year was 96 or so. V3/v4 were around 98-99 then V5/V6 hit 2000/01. JDM models only).
The gearbox and clutch you have will fit your other planned transplant - just make sure you use the clutch that is for your gearbox. So if it's an 03 WRX gearbox, use the clutch for that 'box. :)
PS. I'm guessing that you're in New Zealand...specifically either Hamilton or Dunedin... :P

You are incorrect, the first STI was announced in 1994. 1997 would be a Ver4 and probably an EJ20K motor, not a Ver2 which was still an EJ20G.

You sure about that one? 1994 was when the WRX was released, but IIRC the STi version wasn't until later.

Yeah, 1993 was when the WRX was released in Japan. First STI tuned WRX was a full model year later, to compete with the Celica All-trac I believe. Then Mitsu released the EVO to compete with the STI and the rest, as they say, is history.
