View Full Version : Prodrive or Stromung exhaust (I went with Prodrive)

I need to replace my muffler on my 00 gt wagon. I'm looking at a few different exhausts and wanted some different opinions between a Prodrive and Stromung! Who's got either and how do you like them?

Prodrive exhausts are like "super street". It's quite and civilised, but still hints at "something more". The Stromung stuff is more aggressive, from what I've heard. I prefer the Prodrive because I'm not into attracting unwanted attention.
They both flow pretty well.

I say got custom
I love to rave bout having stromung or a prodrive if I had one, but those are just sticker prices.
Ever come across a exhaust system that had a muffler that looked SIK!, but was not for your car. Well it can be, if you go custom.
Get yourself a nice muffler of your liking, get a LONG resinator or glass pack(which ever is your preference) and get a exhaust shop to make you a cat back. Have them put the resinator or glass pack as close to the cats as possible, and make the piping 2.25 or 2.5 inches(which ever is your preference) and go home happier.
That way it will look like what you want it to, but i can't guarrantee on the noise.

Thanks for all the input so far! I did check with a local muffler shop about making me a custom exhaust and was not happy with what the guy had to say. Told him that I wanted to see about them building me something custom. His reply was: "what do you want to do, make it louder or something? Then I talked to him about deleting one cat and he said " oh know you dont want to do that"! He also asked if my car was from Cali? I told him that the original owner did purchase in Cali. He then proceeded to tell me that I better just go back to stock!! WTF....dude was a complete idiot! Needless to say he wont be getting anywhere near my subie!! I'll definately get a second opinion. Anybody have any shop suggestions for up here in the Seattle area??

The exhaust shop is covering their butts. You can't "delete" a cat - but what you can do is pay them to build you a "track only" system. They don't have to install it, just build it. Then it's not their fault if you get ticketed - you built it yourself.
You can just go to a proper "race" shop and have them build something quality.

go with stromung, best of the best. you pay for what you get. With a full stromung exhaust + HFC (stromung). CAI and ignition coil I put down better HP #'s than anyone else with the same mods but different exhausts. antinino with 2.5" piping put down 131. and he also had more mods than me including manifold spacers.

:smt006 You keep forgetting that you have a rebuild motor compared to my 170K+ mile motor.
I didn't have the Intake Manifold Spacer when I put down 131WHP. Just Intake, headers, cat delete, and 2.5 cat back exhaust and the PROECM Powerchip. Yes, had and have more mods, but you have a fresh motor. I'd give up Mods for a fresh motor any day. :smt023 but that's just going OT here
Yes!, Any brand name exhaust such as Stromung and all of the other big players are going to have is a smoother flow because they use a mandrel bends on the exhaust over a crush bends that most local exhaust make, but I don't think its THAT much of a difference. An exhaust system functions the same exact way the difference is that one has a smoother flow then the other.
I won't ever pay sticker price for a exhaust.
@nwsubie
See if you can find a tunning/performance shop around and talk to them and ask if they know a reputable shop with reasonable prices and if they can refer you to someone. That way you might not get some rude ass MOFO telling you "You have a misfire" when they hear the subaru rumble

Fortunatley for me I've got a great Subaru Performance shop close to me! I just haven't had the time to get in there before they close to talk about the exhaust. Hopefully within the next couple of days.

I have had the Stromung mid pipe(has resonator) and muffler on my '00 OBW for seven years now. Would definitely go this route again. If they still offer stainless and steel, get the stainless for sure.

I'll take a custom built exhaust over "store bought" any day (thats with quality parts and an awesome welder doing the work that is).

What about an ebay 2.5 RS exhaust then just get a shop to make a 6" extender? they should be able to do that lol

you could just buy the obx catback for an RS, it sounds nice but you'll need to get some hangers moved a little

I'd go with Stromung. Looks OEM but it roars.

Those are actually the Prodrives I've been watching on Ebay. I've been watching for a couple of months and they keep selling for $100 shipped for a brand new Prodrive axle back!! I finally pulled the trigger! I hope it's direct fit. It says it fits 00-03 wagon, but we'll see...

If any of you BH or even BE (they have em for you too) owners are thinking of getting or have seen these Prodrives on ebay through Cosworth America, dont second guess contact them they still have a few left. You definately cant beat the price. I got mine for 50 + 50 shipping= $100!!

I will get some later after I get my black 04 wrx seats in my car! They are sooo comfurtable!! I used 2 autozone rubber hangers about inch longer then oem $3 makes it sit perfect off the bumper. You probably hear your exhaust more with the header, I know it made my exhaust tiny bit louder and no worry, I ordered a new set like 10min ago. Kind of worried on my engine though.... Ticking pretty loud and dripping oil bout 5 or 6 drops every night with me already spending alot on the water pump, pullies, cam seals, alternator and belts, ughhhhh! I'm at 147k and prievous owner didn't do crap it seams like on taking care of her, sad! Anyone with a 01 2.5l engine pretty cheap let me know...

Here's my cheap straight thru and the notch wraps it nice. It almost looks like it was made to be there.

so i have a WRX stage 2 header, custom 2.5" piping, no cats, and a stock WRX muffler. it sounds amazing @ idle but then starts to get really raspy with any sort of throttle. (think subaru sound coming through a snare drum and your pretty close) i want an "R32ish VR6" sort of deep rumble mixed with the "thud thud thud" if the subaru. I'm thinking of getting a glasspack or resonator and a remmus muffler meant for a VW R32. or maybe a STi muffler... what do you think?

I would do a Borla or Magnaflow muffler over a Remus and a resonator or glasspack should take alot of that rasp out. :smt023

I believe the only difference is in the tip length!

No, they aren't the same part #. Do a search over on Legacygt.com, there was a guy that had a couple for sale, one for a sedan and another for a wagon. Not sure if they are still available though.
