Hey, I just wanted to see who has built the "Frankinstein", phase l ej25 short block mated with phase l or ll 2.2 heads.
I'm planning on going this route in the far future.

You might want to re-read your question.

I think you got ur answer on RS25 if ur the same dude.

If your not the same dude

What heads are we talkin bout? EJ22 or EJ25 heads?

i would assume he means 2.2 heads as that is typically referred to as the Frankenstein 2.5

My motor is a Frankenstine build, not sure if its what you're looking for though.

I'm looking for the n/a build. I'm just very interested in this build and wanted to know how it runs performance wise. I would go turbo but i've been reading on n/a builds and it just got me wanting to go this route.

I'll be going this route this spring in my Impreza along with some Delta Cam torque grinds. The heads mated to that block will put the compression at around 11.3:1 ish

God damn, I didn't know it went that high. Someone over here local is going to sell his bottom block once he gets a new motor. So, I'm waiting on that with no type on patience.

Bringing this thread back from the dead because I finally popped the franky in my car but I have a starting problem.

Bottom block: 97ej25d
Heads:93 ej22

So the car has spark, I've re-did the timing several times, switched the cam/crank sensors (i have spares for both) and I know the fuel pump works. But when it comes to trying ti start the car, all that happens is a whinding noise from the starter cranking the crankshaft.

Any ideas? I'm not sure if the 93 ej22 sprocket is different from the 95 ej22 sprocket since they are the same motor. I did read a thread on rs25.com stating it could be the cam/crank sprocket.

Any feedback would be great

try:...........................................................................yes....................no
1: is the engine turning over when your crank it? .............go to #2...............bad starter spring/missing flywheel teeth or something
2: does it have spark?.................................................go to #3...............check crank sensor wiring, grounds , coil pack, ecu
3: fuel pressure (check via gauge) good?..........................go to #4 ..............fuel pump, plugged fuel line, etc.
4: check compression. good?.........................................go to #5...............bent valves, wrong timing, etc.
5: check correct timing (via timing light) good?..................go to #6................crank sensor wiring, ecu, backwards plug wires, wrong timing gears
6: check for unplugged injectors and shit. good?.................go to #7................plug that shit in an pay attention next time.
7: pay a competent mechanic to perform steps 1-6. good?....go to #8.................back to stock or sell the shit.

There is another potential problem you could have if all of the above checks out. I've seen in very rare cases that the ignitor goes bad. You'll still get spark when checking the plugs but it will be at the wrong time. Took me about a week to figure a similar issue out on my buddy's 97 gt.
Was the car running before the motor swap?

All phase 1 engines use the same crank and cam triggers, so that's out.

Are you still using the stock 95 ecu? If not stop now and put the stock one back in, you have a one year only ecu, no other year will run that car.

check the blinker fluid.. comonly missed... and if your trying to run the ecu with those heads that wont work... you need one to match the motor year man

Not true. If he has a 95, he has to run the stock 95 ecu. Any other 96-99 ej25d ecu, or 96-98 ej22e ecu will interchange and run.

Yeah, so I did a compression test and all had zero compression. Then I forgot I had solid lifters instead of hlas. Felt pretty relieved, adjusted specs and fired her up.

YAY another member of the Frankenstein club, and glad you got it working.

Tell me about it, wanted to get this done forever and your franky thread is what inspired me to get it this done.Watched your youtube video on how to put piston rings on :).

anyway to get such a compression on a 2002 2.5rs?

yes, new pistons, if you start with an oe 2.5l the Frankenstein is not for you

any decent build threads around for the 2002 leggy? and yes im aware if i wanted speed i should have gotten a gt.. but ilike the ride height of the L and it was such a good deal i couldnt pass it up.

Eh... in the US, the 2000-2004 L's and GT's came with the exact same motor. The GT's didnt get turbo until 2005.

There is always cams, header, exhaust. Quite a few things you can do to make more power.

agjoyce

done exhaust. looking into uel headers. and cams are gonna be quite expensive

Delta regrinds aren't terribly expensive, and they have a few options to choose from.

^this... the cams are only $99 each... it is the labor to remove the cams from the heads that costs so much.

01-15-2014, 06:09 PM
oh.. well i can do the cam work myself thats no issue... i had my cams done in my t-100 it was a 600$ job i guess becaus eof the older parts and no core charge? not sur eoh well.. any risk with a cam job? running too lean, weakening essential parts ect.. ect.. im jnew to these motors.. sorry.

If you go with the torque grind (1000) then no but there are multiple people who experience idle issues with the spicy grind (2000) and light weight flywheels.

You are definitly going to want to have a shop vacuum test your heads/valves before you dissasemble them to give you an idea on if you need a valve job or not.

When I did mine, I just went with a valve job and used all the same valves and springs with new spring retainers. This was at the direction of the machinist who is the most respected subaru machinist in the Sacramento/foothill area doing hundreds of EJ motors and heads per year.

roughly how much would it all cost if i dissasembled everything myself
