Roof Measurements for Vortex Generator

Hi guys,

I really want to put a vortex generator on my 97 Legacy GT sedan and was wondering if anyone has an Impreza or knows someone who could give me measurements of the roof so I could figure out if a vortex gen. made for an impreza could be made to fit my legacy?

I found a bunch of different companies that sell the v. generators but no one will give me measurements, so I've decided to humbly come and ask the masters :smt024 :cool:

I actually thought about putting some on the hood, then on the sides and all over just to do it. =P

I thought of the individual ones but they just didn't look as cool or "legit" as the strip. But if thats my only choice, I may have to go with it.

^ yea the ones that are individual probably are actual vortex generators tho....... meaning they probably do work, while most others do nothing.

i would prefer something that is functional and slightly more ugly than something that doesnt do jack and is still ugly/goofy

but hey its your choice. there are a couple other "styles" of individual tabs out there that i found when looking for them, dont remember what they were, but if you try you should be able to find them, you may be happier with the looks of them....

I, too, am looking for functionality on top of looks but was trying to get both =).

I'm most likely going to go with the indiviual v. gens if I can't find an answer on the Impreza ones.
I read somewhere that they should also be angled a certain way, twice as tall as they are wide, and placed 100mm from the rear window as to really be effective.
This looks like it might be the cheapest way to go also with what you've shown.

It just worries me that they are going to come out crooked as I have shaky hands and crappy depth perception when trying to straighten things. XD

iv put one up to my 1st leg and it was close i wish i put it on but i sold it before i could get one. just get one for ebay there 30 bucks and there plastic so you can trim or whatever

You're talking bout the single strip piece right? And not the single fins?
Which Impreza fit was the close one because on ebay they sell em for 96-00 (or 01 for some) and 01-06

email the sellers and ask for measurements. i think the GD ones are wider then the GC, but im not sure. the one i layed on was for a GD

The sellers either tell me straight up "IT WONT FIT ON ANOTHER CAR THANKS" or that they don't have the product in hand to measure, or are straight lazy and just tell me they havent measured it. I guess these folks just don't want to make money.

The one you layed on for the GD, did u lay it on your 1st gen leggy? and was it too short or long if you can remember

these are supposed to keep the air flow stuck to the back of the car, reducing drag, there are ways to test is these are working on your personal car without a windtunnel... i will see is i can find the link to yarn testing

according to the airtab site people are seeing a 2% to 4% increase in mpg, that doesn't sound outragious and it all i would expect from an aero mod, still that's about 1 mpg at highway speeds for us legacy owners, in theory if you drive 300 miles to a tank with all highway driving then you've saved enough money to pay for one airtab, not too shabby really

The gc rear is 41"
bugeye rear is 39.5"

it's the top of the rear window measurement,
plus, its not a strait line.

^^thanks alot man that helps alot. If my leggy's rear window is about the same size or smaller, then it'll be cool to cut the long one piece or else I have to get the seperate single fins.

holy thread revival! I just pulled the trigger on 10 of those air tabs, I'll do yarn test on them when it warms up. as i already track my mpg I'll have that data for every one too

it's a shame to have such a negative attitude to potential improvements...

that's why i am testing them, i will have picture evidence if they work or not and have mpg data to show if they really reduce drag enough to be worth it

i am not going to leave them on my car if they don't work, i'll consider it a community service that i donated $40 to do.

the real reason for these is on rally cars it help the ass to be stable at high speeds when the car is off the ground. its so your the ass of your car doesnt go side to side on you in the air. have tried the before on previous car, they didnt do anything. i dont have a negative attitude as you guys so put. im just saying what is honest. i know some of you might not want to listen to it, but hey read and move on.

hehe just for clarification on intentions, I asked about the measurements because I just liked how they looked on the EVO's and I figured with the aggressive front styling of GT's, it would add a nice touch to the mid/rear end of my BD. I'm actually not looking for functionality as much as aesthetics. Its nice to learn a bit about what they are for and why they wouldn't really matter on the BD's or whatever you would it on that still wouldn't be functional but they still add a bit of style to me, especially since I don't see alot or any BD's with em. To some may be stupid, to others give a nice glow in the soul into the essence of the car THEY drive everyday and are proud of.

i have to wait for it to warm up, the car has to be @ 40F for the adhesive to work.
and there is a storm taking a huge snow-dump on us atm and it look like there are two more systems that are going to get us here soon :/

did a test fit, it's still too cold for the adhesive, there is a bit of a curve on the roof at the window line so they had to be moved forwards a bit pics:
