throttle lag

I have a 1998 U.K legacy estate 2.0 GLS AUTO, the throttle is very strange, sometimes when i put my foot down the car will not accelerate at all even if i go to kickdown!! and i have nearly caused an accident at a roundabout, then some days it flys out of the traps like a porsche, any thoughts??

Without being there to see what the car is actually doing, can't say for sure.

But I will say that this cars have notoriously problematic mass air flow meters (MAF) and they cause all sorts of weird problems just like this, and they very rarely actually set a trouble code for the failure.
