View Full Version : Opinions Please: Carbon Fiber Vinyl Trunk (pics)

So, I purchased DLC's old SYMS wing and would like to throw it on because I'm bored this winter and want and easy DIY project. I purchased a wingless trunk but it is a different color so I'm just looking at option on how to get everything on fast and clean.
I'm thinking rather than trying to paint the trunk myself to save money, I could just throw on the carbon vinyl as a stop-gap until I just fork over the money and have the trunk done right. The vinyl would cost about $120, while paint would be free if DIY, or about $300 if done at a shop.
So I need some opinions. Below are some shitty photoshops of the color combo. First one is what it would look like as the car sits now (no JDM bumper/spats) Second one is how it would look when I finally get my ass in gear and put on the JDM rear bumper and spats I have sitting around. (Also added a (real) carbon fiber exhaust shield that I plan I throwing on the JDM bumper).

Let me know. I like it, but there is some heavy stigma with this new(er) trend.

I say Save the 120 and wait till you get the rest of the money... not a fan of "look alike" carbon..
I voted No, but if your trunk and hood and some overlay on the roof are in carbon, then I say go for it...
carbon fiber overlay is really ricerish imo, xxgtbspecxx looked gay and he only did the fuel door
get it real and i think itll look good

i know how it is, but if you can muster up the patience, you'll be happy you waited instead of messing with your car out of boredom.
just for the record, im not a fan of that style of 2-tone.
the only reason it looks somewhat decent on the 2nd photo is because it flows with the wheel color.

That would only look good if you do the bonnet and wing aswell. imo

I think overlay is lame. You should just paint it flat black yourself hah! That last pic looks good though.

Your poll is wrong. You're asking if we like the two-toned look, not whether or not we think you should spend $120 on some vinyl which you will then remove later.
I voted that I liked the two tone look, but I think it's silly to spend money on something you're going to throw away later (except tires and brakes  )

Carbon vinyl is very polarizing among the car crowd...
It seems like the consensus is no to two tone (except Huffer  ) and/or fake carbon anyway.
I wouldn't go painted two tone because that is on par with unpainted body kits, just seems lazy and odd. If i'm going to paint only the trunk, it might as well be the same color as the rest of the car.
Sitting here though, I'm thinking I need more convincing, any reason besides "it's rice" that I shouldn't do this? Lets assume I leave it on for a year, so that $120 is not such a waist...
I only ask because there are many mods on my car that can fall into the "rice" category. Ineffective STI roof vane? Check. Drilled rotors? Check. Rear under diffuser? Check....
Trunk only, I don't have the money or desire to do the roof and hood...

And ok..... what about just a flat/matte/gloss black vinyl??
Would you guys appreciate that more? It would be cheaper, and serve the same purpose... Maybe that's the way to go as a stop gap?
Or is it still a "no" to the two tone?
(I'm getting rid of the poll since it does seem like this is a different discussion now.)

^agreed, why take a perfectly good painted piece and make it look like a replacement part that you still need to get painted?
i don't mind two tone, but half assed two tone is horrible. my personal definition of rice is : an add on cosmetic piece that in turn makes the car look cheaper than it did without.
two tone, go all out or don't go at all...

see what you did there?
brought some white onto the hood, took some black down the side, red outline. thats going all out, not just having a painted piece.
the wheels being black + window tints ties it all in.

White vinyl. If you're insisting on covering it with something, at least attempt a color-match if you don't like the two/multi tone approach.
I do think white cars can carry the black/white thing very easily - mine does.
As for your "ricer" reasoning - the vinyl carries far more "steam" than your other mods (like roof spoiler, rear under diffuser) because once it's removed, it's useless. The other parts you mentioned? Still useful to someone, whereas vinyl cannot be reused.
Shoot if I afford the waste $$$ I would cover my car in vinyl prior to winter, and roll like that until spring. No worries about the paint being messed up.

That's the thing, I know i won't be able to even get close to finding a white that would match. So rather than try, I thought about going the opposite direction since, like you said, white cars can carry the two tone fairly easy.
I understand the vinyl is a waste once it's used, which is why i suggested the straight black. It would cost about $50.
Plus I guess I was just looking to do something different, and something I could do now.
But, in my head I know it's dumb, I'll just end up painting it. Put that $50 towards some other bits.
Guess I just have cabin fever with my car, I'm tired of seeing the same thing everyday, looking for a visual shock.
OEM paint it is then. Thanks guys for the input.

Haha, NO!
Just think of it as a thought exercise, you're now somehow smarter from posting in here...
Trust me, I want most of the time I spend with my brain returned too.

ok, there is this amazing stuff it is called 3M DI-NOC Carbon it is the closest you are going to get to real CF, there was a huge rage about this stuff, and if you are going to get something def. go for this.
and there is a guy on nasioc.com that is selling a 4' x5' section for 150$, he had it left over from the roof wrap he did on his white gc. its spot on you would never know unless someone said, this is vinyl.
the only problem with it is you can only get the true stuff from 1 place, and it is very very expensive.
there are pros and cons to wrapping in vinyl,
pros, it always can come off if you dont like it
cons, vinyl will fade in sunlight, it might take 3 - 5 years but it will fade.

Yea I wouldn't use anything else, I've known about the stuff for months and just haven't thought of anything to do with it.
You can get it many different places just FYI... I'd be happy to give you some links to get it cheaper. Even have one place that will sell you a 4'x10' sheet for $172 (yes, genuine 3M di-noc...) there are also other vendors that sell it for about $30/ft, one of them is on rs25.com.
Don't want to sound like a jerk, just want to make sure people reading this have the right facts, as it sounds like you need them too
