View Full Version : Cruise Control Not Working

Alright so my Cruise control was working before I got a CEL for a bad O2, I replaced the O2 and the light went off, but cruise doesn't work still. Do I have to get a OBD-II reader and clear the code even if its not active? Or just unhook the battery? I tried the battery thing right after replacing the O2. CEL was on for like half hour, then went off.

Sounds like you need to clear the stored code. As you found, the cruise is disabled if the engine has certain CELs. Free to borrow from the auto-part chains.

Just FYI; Autozone won't clear your codes, they will only read them.

The unit at my local autozone clears them. Maybe the Autozone near you went too cheap? :smt002

^^ maybe your Autozone guy doesn't care about lawsuits...that's a straight out liability issue.

Alright, Thanks guys! I will do the "Loan-a-tool" from Autozone so there are no Liability issues!

It could also be a loose vaccum line on the bottom of the cruise control motor dealie.

Vacuum line on the bottom of the CC motor thing? got a pic? I have no idea what that is. haha

The reason autozone (and cheaker o'rielys if you live on the west coast)
dont clear codes is because they started getting sued over it
one of local shops here in Utah told the local autozone if they don't stop
they would stop ordering parts from them and ordering from the competitor
needless to say autozone caved

Interesting. Kinda sucks that shops have that much pull...But oh well, I can do the loan-a-tool and do it myself without spending a dime! :smt029

You mean Shucks/checkers/etc? Cuz Autozone is a completely different company... :smt002

beside the two stated before, is there other reasons why cruise doesn't work? my car has cruise but don't work. I make 4hr trips to seattle every now and then. cruise didn't work when i got the car. so kinda got used to not having it, but if its a cheap fix it might be worth while.
schucks cleared a code on my car, after that the fuel pump stoped priming :smt017

As for the cruise issue, when i bought mine it did not work either. I have a manual trans so I have a clutch pedal switch, the grommet that was supposed to be on the clutch pedal arm was missing and the clutch switch was not being activated. Replaced the grommet and the cruise is now working. I am not going to comment on the code reading at the parts stores as that was not the question posed and I don't want to get this thread off course.

Yeah I was meaning both autozone and checker/shucks/oreilys were getting sued by local mechanic shops. The checker here in kaysville had their obd II scaners taken away by the regonal corprate office over a year ago. But the auto zone across the street just barely stopped pulling codes

Yeah I went into Autozone and they said company policy, no can do. So I am doing the loan a tool tomorrow when I change my tranny and rear diff fluids!

Alright, I checked the vacuum line. Its all good.
I went and did the loan a tool, and no codes at all.
I tried a spare Cruise Control Computer as well, still nothing.
I am completely mind boggled. It worked before the CEL. :-?
Have you checked the fuse?

Checked the fuse. Its good!
I am completely mind boggled here.
Just as an FYI, I switched wiring harnesses in my car so that the 2.2 would run without problems. My fog lights didnt work after swapping that, so I wired them in manually. None of the buttons on that section of the dash dont work. So I am thinking it might be something related to that.
I am thinking it has the constant power, but it just doesn't have the amperage draw for full operation?

That C/C rubber vacuum hose needs to be plugged in tight. Mine was only slightly frayed at the tip when my cruise stopped working so I just cut an inch off and got a fresh tip. It worked after that.
Does the cruise switch cause a faint electric "click" when you set speed? Sounds like the click you hear from the window wiper motors when intermittently engaged. That may help you diagnose as an electrical problem rather than mechanical.

I agree. Mine "looked" like it was fine but when I replaced the rubber vacuum line it started working again.

yes, im bumping an old thread.....i have relevant questions and dont feel like making a new thread for them.
my wagon (brighton) didnt have cruise control from the factory, so i followed all the steps to add all the oem components. dash switch, steering wheel, w/ control toggle, under-dash computer, 4-wire brake switch, vacuum pump and actuator.....the brake switch i finally got today. now, when i first started this quest about a year ago, the cruise control light in the gauge cluster would light up when the button was pressed. when i finally got around to getting that last peice of the puzzle, that light no longer comes on. i can here a click in the area of the computer box, but nothing happens, no light, no cruise control. am i missing something? is there something else i forgot to plug in somewhere?

My vacuum line looked fine on my old 99 legacy, but i pulled it off for a closer look and it had a tiny crack, cut off about an inch, put it on and that fixed it.

For whatever reason, once it got cold here the cruise wouldn't work for a while in my car, till it warmed up inside. Then, playing around with the tilt, I've found out that I had to lower the column to initiate the cruise control. Seeing as I use it often enough, its a nuisance. But, maybe something you should try.
Does the light come on with the button at least?

The light in my does not come on to indicate the system is on. I can hear the relay click on when I push the button though. I may try tilting the column down and see what happens.

Hmm, I'd start with the button, figure out why the light's not coming on. perhaps the connections came loose when you switched the harness.

I have a few buttons that I want to try swapping. I just don't think about it since I don't use the CC that much.

The light might have burned out. If you can hear a click, then the relay is being switched on.
The system will work without the light bulb, so if it isn't, then you may have forgotten to plug something in.

the button itself won't do anything to the system, other than have it ready. first relay click will be from setting it at speed.
I wasn't suggesting that the light is key to the system working, just a starting point for diagnostics.
