this past thanksgiving my alternator went. its 120 for a reman. or 40 for a used i went fo rthe used(was short on cash) its been working fine up untill 3 days ago car wont start check it and its bad. luckily it had a 60 day warranty so i went back got another one put it on and check it. its bad too! i was extremely angry. i have one from a 91 legacy but it doesnt have the right plug so i rewired it to work in mine until mmonday when i can take it back for the third time. i also had to buy a new battery because it killed it. so hopefully tomorrow i will have a working alternator. sorry for the venting just a bit mad

These things are failing a lot this season because it's so freakin cold! Mine left me stranded on the interstate a couple weeks ago, thankfully I coasted into a rest stop.
I'd definitely just get a brand new one, I've had trouble with used or "dropped" alternators and its just not worth it cause you end up spending more money to fix your used/broken one... I hate it when things go wrong...

Picking up a remanufactured alternator from my local Subaru dealer tomorrow. 99.00 + 60.00 core charge. This is from Subaru so it should work without any issues. (fingers crossed)
I have a 2.2, not sure if the same alternator works for the 2.5, but this is cheaper than Kragen, Napa, and Autozone by ~50.00!
1stsubaruparts.com lists it for 67.50 + 50.00 core.
Have prices changed recently? I was concerned after reading the posts here.....

napa 1N9100 new alternator $164.00
I would check the warranty on dealer part most dealers are 90 days on electronics (remans are only as good as the guy rebuilding it)

Picked up and installed, looks just like the old one.
Dealer stated one year warranty.
I will let you all know if it bombs cause I will be one unhappy guy.
Why do alternators feel like a crap shoot?

^^ Because most people buy reman ones, and reman parts are garbage in general because the rebuilders try to do it as cheaply as possible.
BTW, to the OP, your bad battery was probably the reason your original alternator failed. Discharging a battery won't ruin it unless the battery was already bad.
