Hi, i have a 2000 2.5 SOHC legacy GT with 275.000km on it, recently i got Head Gasket problem , like the engine started to shake badly, 4th cylinder's spark plug is white(burnd) , engine coolant lasts one day max, overheats all the time. :smt010
wat you think guy's, shoud i change HeadGaskets, timing belt, water pump. Or engine swap with same oem motor, but low milage, it will cost me 1800$ installed 62kmiles on it?????
hey bro, try a poll!
it depends on a number of factors:
first are you mechanically inclined? second how much time do have for this?
if you wanted to save some cash replacing parts on the block might not be a bad idea if you know what your doing.
if you go the swap route, the plus side to doing a swap is that it is plug and play (if you have the exact identical engine), you save some time but not the money.
if your car is a daily driver like mine and can't afford the down time, i would just take it to your mechanic.

i would just fix it, unless u have been driving it all the time and over heating the crap outa it. Then you could have done some more expensive damage to it.
sounds like a decent price for the motor swap tho. im assuming thats in canadian dollars?

i've got the same engine, and same car as you. i did the headgaskets @ 75,000
having it done correctly with gaskets, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, new oil, new coolant, coolant conditioner, and machined heads it was $1,300.
with 275,000 on yours the good deal seems to be going for the younger motor for only $500 more.
but you have to consider possibly doing HG's again if it hasn't been done already on the young one.
is there a warranty on the new engine?
is there recorded proof that HG'S have been replaced on the new engine already?
those answers would help you decide

^ yea honestly even the new engine should have the HGs done and get a new timing belt before getting put in your car aswell...

Thanks guy's, i found better deal for 2004 impreza 2.5 engine 80.000km with new head gasket complete engine for
2500$ CAD. installed. what you think ???
the other option 1600$ CAD. head gasket job on my old motor that has hi milage.
or the engine that i found for 1800$ 2002 legacy with 100.000km on it, probably gonna need new H.G., timing B., wat.pump...........
i dont have a lot of time for this project, its my daily driver car, and winter car.
What do you think ???

If you can afford it, I'd say go with the 04 Impreza motor as it has the least amount of miles and you won't have to worry about HG's at all or the timing belt for a while. All the motors you mentioned are EJ251's so they should work fine. Then you can sell your motor to offset the cost a bit.
