I broke my flywheel and trashed my rear main seal. The mechanic got it back running, but says I need a new motor because its to badly damaged! Where should I start?

I'll put a new motor in it but where do I get one, and what can I do to make it real good?

Thanks

If you made 217,000+ miles I say you did good! Just look around on Craigslist and other classifieds for a used engine. I would change the head gaskets right away.

at 217K you got your money out of that one.

CL is great, ebay too. just decide what you want to pay.

like around here there arent alot of subarus, cause we have no hills, or snow, and even our dirt isnt quite right.

so i just found a whole car with good service records and minor issues, because it was cheaper then a JDM motor+shipping off ebay that needs some work to work correctly(egr stuff mostly i think)

and then while whatever motor you decide to go with, do all front seals/ waterpumps, timing belt, tensioners, HGs, valve covers and all the rear seals etc. while it is out.

I see a lot of jdm complete motors out there, even new ones with trannys, is this the way to go? I spent $1300 on custom stainless exhaust, so I was thinking about that much on the motor swap.

I think Im going to get a used one from a online engine dealer, and rebuild it! I've found them from $900-1500. Probably gonna go for it!

bah.. you can get a used engine that needs to be rebuilt for less. I see people parting out their cars ALL the time with engines for $200-300 bux that need HG's and rebuild gaskets.

It would be nice to get something in good shape, Im sure I'll find something, it would just be nice to have it delivered to my house...I'll find something!

check your local craigslist or something.. or maybe even junk yards. they usually go for pretty cheap.. and you can usually talk someone down if they need a complete rebuild.

I think every one can agree, this will be a do it at home project. I don't want to pay the mechanic for this! What about buying a whole car and parting it?

you could go crazy and do a swap at this point but that would be $$$. I would find another motor at a junk yard and rebuild it. good time to upgrade your clutch and flywheel.

I think Im gonna get a low miles complete engine, do the head gaskets and timing belt. The mechanic said he'd do the labor only $200. $1500 for the engine, though.
