CV Axles - share your experiences!

Installed a reman axle in the Legacy yesterday. The last reman I got lasted about 40k miles. OEM lasted 110k.

The new reman axle however came with a new axle nut and roll pin. The older reman axle came with neither, and just did not last. This new one is a Napa Maxdrive and the old one I am not happy with was A*P or AVP. Stay away from those.

50 bucks later and no more vibrations!

i cant get the back axles out on my car, there a pita. do the ones from napa have a life time warrenty?

One year from date of purchase on remanufactured, not sure about new.

I use an axle rebuilder here locally, Hillco - they're great and it's only $40 if you return your old one as a core.

Share your experience with axles so we can establish what is good and what is not....

I bought a set of new axles from an ebay seller... haven't put many miles on them but they bolted right up with no fitment issues. Took me ages to punch the old roll pin out. I will probably not buy an axle off ebay again (for sanity's sake), but I had these sitting in storage for around a year and they were good to go.

I should take a tip from jey and find a local axle rebuilder and have them rebuild my busted ones.

Took me ages to punch the old roll pin out.

I used a screwdriver and a hammer. Getting the pin back in was an adventure though. Took me days to figure out that the pin only goes in one way and that I should turned the whole axle around 180 degrees.

Start a new thread - are you asking how to take apart the CV joint on the axle??

one night i was driving home from work and i made the corner right by mt house and my cv joint fell apart. I saw the metal balls bouncing down the road i was able to make it to my house i went to Napa and had it changed and hour later i don't remember what brand it was but it was a reman axle and i have been on it for about 8 months and no problems so far.

as far as quality goes i dont think that you can beat a set from www.raxles.com (http://www.raxles.com) . the the rebuild em right, when i got mine it looked like it could have been oem. granted they dont give them away, but Marty is the man!

I remember when I had my impreza I made a turn and my passenger side CV went out.. I did not see any balls rolling but I sure did not move and I was only 2000Ft from my job lol

Well i have a sorta rare (most are junked by now) legacy. It's a 1993 Legacy L 2WD Manual. I brought it to a Subaru dealership to ask which axle to replace. I heard the clicking noise but it was mostly when i accelerated and not when i turned in either direction. They told me to replace the left front axle. So after an hour drilling out the spindle nut i got it out and noticed that the axle seemed to be in pretty good shape but i went ahead with it anyway. After i got the new one in the noise was still there :-( So then i went ahead and replaced the right front axle (another 1 hour drilling out the other spindle nut) and the noise went away.

For the left front axle i used a NEW "Cardone Select" axle from rockauto for $59 after shipping. When that didn't work i didn't want to wait for UPS to deliver another axle so i looked around and the one from autozone was $70 with a $10 core for the "Duralast" but then i found a "Fenco" re-manufactured axle at advanceauto for $48 with a $19 core charge which i thought was super cheap so i went with it.

Now the noise is slowly coming back and i'm pissed that even though it's warrantied i have to do it again.

Anyway in short i think the Cardone select ones are a great bargain at $59 especially since they are new and on the other hand i did not have good luck with the Fenco axle from advanceauto.

i just put in two new front axles. both brand new master pros but the drivers side was 64$ with tax after core and it is thinner in diameter than oem.
the pass side was 74$ with tax and they didnt want my core... it is just as thick as oem if not thicker and i like it a lot more because of that.
both have lifetime warranty.
purchased at O'Reilly auto parts FTW!!!

i only have about 200 miles on them so i will have to update later
