What works with what? 5MT

Hey everyone,

Need some help here. I have a 95 Outback with a MT and just blew the tranny. Does anyone know what years of legacy would work with the 95? It seems as if trannies in this part of my state are limited and need to broaden my search horizon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jey can back me up or refute me on this but I know any of the Legacy GT or Outbacks in that body style from 95-99 will work. What I can't comment on is the base model Legacy transmissions. Bear in mind the Outback trans has a shorter 5th gear ratio but a Legacy GT trans with the longer 5th will work as well.

Just make sure the one you find has the same final drive as your current tranny unless you are swapping the rear diff as well.

The 95 Outback is just an L wagon mechanically so it has the same 3.9 final drive and even the 5th gear (unlike the newer Outbacks with bigger tires and therefore the gearing has been adjusted accordingly.)
According to the FSM your gear ratios are 3.545, 2.111, 1.448, 1.088, and .780.
The above link has incorrect information on the 95 Outback.

But anything with the 3.9 final drive will bolt right up and work. On the Legacy side your search will actually be limited to the 2.2L models unless you grab the rear diff along with the tranny from a GT or Outback (they generally have 4.111).

A bunch of Imprezas have the 3.9 FD too. Anything from an Impreza, Forester, Legacy/Outback will bolt right up but if it's not 3.9 FD you will have to swap the rear diff too. Hopefully that will help expand your search a little.

The tranny i bought came from a 97 Legacy L but the engine was a 2.5. Any ideas on whether or not this will work. If not, is the diff for that kinda of tranny rare?

You will destroy the center diff really quickly.

That tranny has a 4.111 final drive. Pretty common actually, found in 95-99 2.5L manual transmission Legacy/Outbacks and 95-99 2.2L AUTO transmission AWD Legacy/Outbacks.
