Boxer diesel?

So today I was doing a bit of research on the boxer diesel that was released a couple years ago In europe and the EPA rated it at 290 ft-Lbs and 54 MPGs which is 3 better than the Prius so in my mid it's worth a look. Now subaru has said the diesel isn't coming out till 2011 or 2012. I want to know more about getting my hands on this beast and swap it in to a older legacy probably a 1999 outback or 2.5GT. ( i say probably cuz I haven't picked out my next subbie yet.) So any info on this would be great. Thanks.

Remember the ~50mpg is in Imperial gallons. From a US car magazine, I read it got low 40s in US gallons. A subbie that gets 40+MPG!!! F*(@ YA! I heard that it's mated to a 6-speed, b/c what other Subaru transmission can withstand 290 torques repeatedly? I guess this is a pipe dream for me, but I'd always imagined putting it in an older Subaru as well. Plus the fact that I really don't like the new models.

Ah well 40 mpgs is still good and I agree the 09 were the best looking but a don't like the 2010 outbacks and legacys which is a shame cuz subies have always been good looking with the exception of TriBeCa.

I´m from Austria / Europe and have a Test Drive in the new Impreza 2,0D
Same Engine as the Forester and Legacy Diesel

I drive from Graz to Vienna and back ( about 450 km / 280 miles ) and the Car needs
at 140 kmh ( 85 mph ) 5 Liter on 100 km ( 47 mpg )

The brochure of the new Legacy 2,0D says that the car needs on the Highway 5,3 Liter on
100 km ( 44 mpg ) and in the City 6,3 liter on 100 km ( 37 mpg )

It has a Fuel tank volume of 65 Liter ( 17,2 Gallons )

The Engine has 150 HP and 350 NM ( 260 ft-Lb ) torque.

The Car weights 1527 kg ( 3365 Pounds )

Wow, thanks for the feedback! How was the car to drive? Did it handle as well as a Subaru should? Was the gearbox a 6 speed, and how did that feel to shift? Did it feel pretty stable at 85mph? How did you like the noise, was it loud and diesel-like? Do all Austrians wear lederhosen, just like in the movies? :grin:

Hi

The Car drive very stable ( Sport Edition with 18 inch rims and 225 Tires ) and funny - like a subaru ^^
You can also drift with it ( scandinavian flick and hand break ^^ )
It drives like a normal Impreza 2,0 R - but in quick corners it tends slightly to understeer.
And because the torque of the diesel the car makes more fun than the 2,0R Petrol Impreza with 150 HP.
You have the full tourge of 260 ft-LB from 1800 rpm to 2500 rpm ( Redline 4800 rpm )
so you can very fast accerlerate even in high Gears. ( 4th, 5th Gear )
The Car needs about 7.5 seconds on 100 kph ( 60 mph )

The diesel has a manual 6 Gearbox - good to shift but with to long ways from gear to gear.

I dont know what in the USA loud is but the Boxer Diesel is quieter than a Volkswagen Common Rail Diesel.
I know that - i´m working for Volkswagen ( but they are boring )
On the highway it was a little louder than a normal petrol fueld car.
In the city ( under 2500 rpm ) silent as a petrol car.
Only when the engine is cold you can hear that its a diesel, but after a few miles its normal.

I think its a good Engine and very good for the Image of Subaru in EUrope.

The salesman in the Subaru Shop in my City says, since they have the Diesel they sell 200 percent more Cars.
Damn Europe - 70 percent of our Cars are Diesel.

Thanks for your detailed reply, even to my funny question. I don't understand why they don't bring more Diesels to the US. The excuse is lack of market demand and more pollution, both of which I believe are false. Here people pay (IMO) a lot for the Mercedes "smart" car which gets worse economy than other 4-door vehicles and takes premium fuel! It's as if companies (even our own Ford) think that we are not "worthy" to get the best they have to offer.

Plus diesel prices are super inflated with taxes in the US because we use a lot of semi trucks to ship goods around. So you don't end up saving much money buying a diesel vehicle.

Yeah many Americans are total n00bs at fuel efficiency. The Smart Car's primary feature is not fuel efficiency, it is size - being able to park it just about anywhere in narrow European streets.

As far as I know you don't get diesel because of high NOx in exhaust gases; they don't meet your standards.
And Subaru does not plan to install AdBlue system (basicly injecting urea into catalytic converters and with that drasticly lowering NOx in exhaust).

On the other hand, we don't get turbos any more. Last one was 1992-1994 Legacy with EJ20G.

Smart is easy to park, but insane expensive to service.

i personally think diesels are the fuel of future. mostly because of the obvious benefits of diesels,
historically speaking diesels are more reliable, more efficient, produce better fuel economy, and they run on whatever u feed the damn things.
also, the gallon-to-achier ratio of the blue-green algae (biodiesel) is nearly 10 times that of corn (ethanol)
the major hurtle (for the USA) is the fact that most americans assosiate diesels as big, loud and very dirty. and people need to realize that diesels are a good choice, for daily drivers.

We used to have an OLD 1980 something mercedes turbo diesel. that thing was a tank!! it wasnt a unibody. it had a full on frame. it wasnt real fast considering it was almost as heavy as my dads 1/2 ton pickup and it sucked down diesel at like 17 mpg (with the mechanical fuel injector turned up for another estimated 5-10 horse) it even blew some black smoke when you stepped on it lol. but it was real reliable and had some good power.

lol yeah those things are gnarly. i got a buddy who has one and he put a bigger turbo on it and like a huge exhaust and junk.
and when he drives it down the street it sounds like a big burly cummins turbo diesel and then its this older mercedes 550 d or somthing like that. its pretty funny.

Diesels have come leaps and bounds in the past 10 years. Well, really even just the past 5 years. The problem I'm seeing from a mechanics point of view is that the newest emissions controls on them (mainly the DPF) is very finicky. That and some manufacturers *cough*Ford/IH*cough* still haven't figured out how to make a reliable fuel injector. But yeah, newer diesels don't really suffer from all the downsides that they used to that turned people off to them. They don't smoke, they don't have a strong odor (still a little stinky at WOT, but much less than most gas powered cars since our gas has so much sulfur in it), they aren't that loud unless its really cold, and they aren't slow. I'm still not going to run out and buy a diesel unless I need a tow rig, but if someone had a gun to my head and said I had to buy a Prius or a new Jetta TDI, I'd choose the VW hands down.

yea fords injectors suck. my friend as stated above is throwing 5 trouble codes for fuel injector sensors or somthing or another. but today i saw a diesel VW beetle with a 4 inch exhaust and that thing was actually loud and fast! it also chunked smoke like craazzzy it must have been hotrodded or somthing idk what you could do to a vw diesel to do that but it was pretty cool haha

well i agree with you up till you said the VW thing. i HATE VW with a flaming passion. i hate working on them (especially wiring problems. cuz all the wires in the wiring harness are the same f-ing color.) but in general, their cars arnt all that reliable and it seems like nothing is easy to fix and nothing is cheep. thats why im a firm believer in honda, subaru, and toyota. for the most part they are simple enough to work on, and they are much more reliable. i would take the prius any day. easy. the prius has lower predicted owner cost, better reviews, better fuel economy, plus the government tax break for buying hybrid, it also has better predicted reliabilty, and is predicted to retain its value better. plus it has a lifetime warrenty on the battery and 100,000 mile warrenty on everything electrical. plus the prius comes better options. not to mention its cheaper on insurance. (i know all this cuz i worked at the toyota dealer and the VW/audi dealer.)

that lifetime warranty on the battery is a joke. when its about next to impossible to get them cause there backordered 6-12 month if you lucky.
