I know that any EJ series tranny will bolt to any EJ series engine, but what will directly replace my '95 AWD manual transmission. I got to drive my Legacy for the first time last night, only to find that the tranny whines so loud that you have to raise your voice to talk to the passenger. I bought the car knowing that this was a possibility... *sigh* I know that some of the cars (such as the SS and 2.5 cars) came from the factory with hydraulic clutches. Mine is cable driven. I have a new clutch assembly and PDM sleeve kit that I will want to add to the donor transmission. What years/models will these directly mate to? I have a lead on a freshly rebuilt transmission from a '98 AWD 2.2l Legacy. Will this be a direct bolt-on? Any input will be appreciated. I'm still trying to decide if I want to keep the car or not.

Does anyone know if the transmission from a '98 Legacy w/2.2 will bolt directly to my '95 w/2.2 I know that the shifters are different, but weren't the later models set up for hydraulic clutches, whereas mine is cable?

I was under the impression that only the 2.5L got the hydraulic setup for N/A. I thought that the 1.8 & 2.2 N/A were cable actuated.

Yes, for your instance, any EJ tranny will bolt up. To keep it as simple as possible, stick to cable MT.

and make sure that you match rear diff ratios.

any non-SS 1st gen 5MT should work fine. 97+, every 5MT was hyrdaulic, I believe. So go with a 90-96 5MT (non SS of course, but I doubt you'd find one).

If you want to convert over to hydraulic than that 98 5MT would work.

Not to jack a thread, but...

I need to find a transmission that fits on my '98 Outback Phase I EJ25. I was thinking about going to the junkyard and grabbing a 1st gen manual transmission, but I don't know how this would compare to my 98's when it comes to cable/hydraulic, shift linkage, etc. Linkage I'm not so worried about, but I can't really be converting clutch engagement systems.

Thanks for the help!

They're all non-hydraulic clutches up until 96. Somewhere in MY96, it changed to hydraulic.

The SS tranny was hydraulic, I think.

Don't worry about jacking the thread, EXP sold his Legacy.
