Well, a few weeks ago I picked up a junk yard motor for my '87 Toyota pickup because my current one has oil blow by begining. I have become a regular at the local salvage yard, so I ened up with a great deal. $75 for a 22r motor which was pulled out for me and included everything I needed plus the clutch/pressure plate were left on the block (not a normal thing to have happen at most salvage yards).
I finally got some time to tear into the motor today after many crappy weather days when I had time to work on it. I purchased a full gasket kit, NGK plugs, and a few other motor rebuild items to make her better than new. I started with sandblasting the exterior of the block so it's all cleaned up to be painted before installation. I managed to get the intake & exhaust manifolds removed w/o any real problems.
Then I removed the valve cover to find one hell of a solid sludged up mess laying there waiting for me. I can only assume the previous owner of the truck didn't care to change the oil often. Of course working at an oil change shop I'm on top of it every 3,000 miles like clock work. Well, I'm very glad I went through all the work to tear it down instead of just dropping it in like my co-workers suggested.
Now I can clean it all out and soak the head w/o the valve train in my buddy's large parts washer. All the parts I removed from the block are getting sandblasted in my blast cabinet. She'll look real nice once it's back together & painted!
This just proves to anyone who thinks that oil can't sludge up & become solid in the head is dead wrong. I had to use a flat head screw driver to remove most of the build up. If you notice, the cam shaft has been making a path for itself through the build up. It's pretty sad really to see that someone allowed a motor to get this bad.
Here's pictures of the sludge build up I found in the head:

Thats crazy! Hopefully theres not too much damage to the engine. I wonder if he thought jello would be a good substitute for oil

Odd thing is once I removed the head, the cylinder walls looked in excellent shape & the bottom of the valves look good too. So I'm going to break down the valve train, clean up the head & install new valve guides & valve seals.
I have yet to remove the oil pan, but that should be interesting after seeing what the top of the engine looked like... Once everything is cleaned up and back together I plan to run regular Pennzoil 5w30 oil. After the first 200 miles I will run Gumout Concentrated Engine Cleaner through the motor to clean out anything sludge or debris that might break loose. Then switch it over to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w30 oil like I use in the wife's '98 2.5GT.

22r? Carb'ed? I had a 87 toyota pickup xtra cab with a 22r. That thing was slow. But a cherry bomb and 6in tall filter gave me hot air intake and a nice note out the back. Unfortunately, mine was a piece, with a bad radiator, which probably caused the head to warp or blow the headgasket because it chewed through the number 3 spark plug in about three months.

Yeah, I have a glass pack installed and a K&N filter I picked up cheap online. Now I'm looking at a upgraded camshaft, header & possibly a Holley carb for it. Anything to get a little more snot out of the motor! I'd love to install a Weber set up, but I never see them go for under $450 these days.

STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM HOLLEY!!!!!!!! I went through two carburetors, both had the exact same problem. They would just DUMP fuel down into the engine, no matter your air/fuel ratio, rich idle screw adjustment, nothing affected it. My drag racing friend had a guy custom build him a holley, this guy spent 20 minutes on the phone with me diagnosing every screw he could think to adjust and everything, nothing worked. Took it to a shop and nothing worked. Of the 15-20 times I called holley, I got through once. He told me to follow the booklet. I said I did that three times already, he said no do it again. I said ok, thinking he was going to stay on the line, he hung up and I never got through again. They're f-ing lame in my book. Also, the weber carbs actually have less CFM than the stock ones, its just that they are new, so everything moves and runs better. You'd notice the same, if not greater improvement with a new stock unit. Anyway, stay away from holley.
Maybe edelbrock has a universal one that'll fit. There's a site I found once that had dual carb setups, they were japanese racing carbs, both in single and dual applications. They even sold 22RET's ready to bolt in with tons of goodies on them. I forget the site now though.

Well, with the stock motor making a crazy 103 hp/129 tq, I've decide to add these few parts to see if she'll come to life a bit more:
Crane LX91 ignition coil
Taylor 8mm wires
Comp Cams Street camshaft
LC Engineering dual chain adjustable cam gear
Aisan carb to K&N adaptor & filter
4-1 header
High flow cat
OR... I could just drop in a 350 V8 & Turbo 400 tranny for $500
(the V8 swap just might happen, you never know!)

Do the V8 swap. Heck, even a V6 would suffice. Not much hope for those motors.

Yea, some times you have to sit down and think about whether it's worth it to spend money on a certain motorset. Some just don't have the potential. And if you can really do that for 500 bucks, you'll spend that easily on the parts you listed! Do it haha

Well update on the motor work I've been doing on the 22R head.
I removed all of the valve train & soaked everything in my parts washer. I got all of the sludge & build up out of the head. The bottom of the head was resurfaced and cleaned up so it would be ready to be regasketed. I know this motor will not run faster because of all my work, but I know it will run & last a lot longer because of it.

As for upgrading the motor, that all went out the window recently. I was offered a '79 Chevy C-10 pickup with 350 V8 & Turbo 400 tranny. It's in pretty good condition and the guy is only asking $600 because the bed is shot and he doesn't want to put anymore money into it. So I'll likely be selling the 'Yota to make way for a full size truck which will be able to pull a trailer with my Project Nissan truck on it when it's finished.
