it makes kinda like a grinding or rubbing noise only when i let off the gas if im pushing on it its not there and its not there when im standing still only when im coming to a stop a let of the gas, it sounds kinda like its coming form the back i cant tell wat side and it makes the noise alot when i go over a bump i think im not sure if it was just in my head, wat could it be?

upload a vid to youtube then post it here.

legacy98gt
02-11-2010, 10:54 PM
ok ill do it tomotow morning

jey
02-12-2010, 11:17 AM
Manual or automatic transmission? Does it do it in every gear?

legacy98gt
02-12-2010, 11:25 AM
automatic, yeah it does it in every gear but only when i let off the gas and if i put it in nutral it still does it

legacy98gt
02-12-2010, 11:44 PM
ok i kinda pin pointed it, its coming from right under the passenger seat or maybe right behind it somewhere in there, i ruled out breaks, bearings, and exhaust wat else could it be? i cant seem to get it on my recorder cause my muffler is to loud lol

jey
02-13-2010, 02:20 PM
If it does it in neutral I would also suspect the rear diff or an unbalanced driveshaft if it seems to vary directly based on the speed of the car.

legacy98gt
02-14-2010, 01:22 AM
i changed my rear diff. fluid and it was good no shavings or anything in it i chaned it with lucus gear oil and its still doing it

legacy98gt
02-14-2010, 01:24 AM
how do i checked to see if my drive shave is balanced? it dounds almost like something is loose and is clunking around when im coming to a stop but when i ush he brakes or gas it goes away

legacy98gt
02-25-2010, 11:55 PM
its still making the noise but now it seems to do it alot when i go over a bump and its getting louder, wat can i check? its not my driveshaft, brakes, rear differential, tires, wat else is under there? it almost sounds like its coming from the springs or struts or something but if i push the car down by hand it doesnt make any noise and my struts are still good, i cant figure out. could bad springs make this noise?

98outbackpdx
02-26-2010, 01:27 AM
i would try and have the tranny fluid flushed/front diff, see if there is any shavings in it. it would be worth a shot.

legacy98gt
02-26-2010, 06:39 PM
i did already, no shavings, and the rear differential too. wat else?

legacy98gt
03-01-2010, 08:18 PM
now it seems to make it when i go over a bump, i got a video but it sound different then in real life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbcDAEpNvVk it sounds more high pitch, more of a clank then a clunk if you now wat i mean

d1giPhux
03-01-2010, 08:29 PM
thats a pretty 'circular' sounding noise. Couple of things you may be able to tell us that can help is diagnose it further:

1. Does the sound increase / decrease with the speed of the car at all?

2. What is the easiest way to get the car to start making the noise? Can you tell WHERE its coming from on the car.. front, back, left, right?

Do you think it could possibly be something rubbing against the wheel.. such as the brake rotor shields?

It sounds pretty 'circular' like i said.. as if it has something to do with the wheel / that area of the car. However.. its a bit hard to tell what type of a sound it is. Do you smell anything at all?'

edit: I search for 'differential noise' on youtube and found a lot of stuff that sounded SORT of similar:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TQatsVaSy4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nzOPfRznJw

After listening to more differential noises on there.. definitely sounds like it could be the differential. Just because you didn't see metal shavings.. doesnt mean much. It could be a couple of months before it wears out and dies.

legacy98gt
03-01-2010, 08:38 PM
it makes it when im slowing down from any speed but the second i touch the gas it goes away, i checked all the brake system like 4 times its not that. its coming from the right rear. and i dont smell anything at all and it still drives good. i flushed my differential fluid to see if it had shavings or anything and it didnt, i relaced it with lucus gear oil and its still making the same noise, it makes it in nutral too.

legacy98gt
03-01-2010, 08:41 PM
i tried jacking it up too like he did and it doesnt make any noiseits almost like its coming from my struts or something is that posibly?

d1giPhux
03-01-2010, 08:59 PM
Ah! Try this: See if the clicking stops / starts depending on which direction the steering wheel is in while coming to a stop.

My car had this problem where when i was coming to a stop and turning right SLIGHTLY.. ever so slightly.. it would be a sound very similar to that.

It turned out to be that I needed 2 new axles in the front.. so it may also be that. Its worth a try. Just go into a parking lot somewhere and see how you can test it out a bit more. Record the speed your going.. what direction you are going when stopping.. etc.

legacy98gt
03-01-2010, 09:05 PM
it does it in either direction its coming from the back and there both new alxes and wheel bearings brake pads and tires

d1giPhux
03-01-2010, 10:05 PM
Hmm.. all new stuff eh? As of when? Who installed it?

If its not a case of failing new stuff.. then id go back to the differential as a possibility.

Anyone else got any other ideas for tests here he could try??

legacy98gt
03-01-2010, 10:35 PM
it was making the noise for a while and i thought it was my wheel bearings so i changed them and the axles cause one boot was torn and i changed the brakes cause they were almost gone too, i did all the work but it was maing the noise before i installed the new parts. im thinking its the struts or sprins or something cause it does it alot when i go over a bump

legacy98gt
03-02-2010, 12:42 AM
well im gona buy some lowering springs in 2 days so im gona look at everything while im in there. i think its my springs or something cause it happens alot when i go over a bump, i just had the shocks replaced about 3 months ago so i now the shocks are good, i just cant figure it out, is there a test i can do to see if it is my differential? i already did the flush twice is there anything else?

legacy98gt
03-02-2010, 02:59 PM
how do i tighten up the rear drum brakes? i think it might be loose and maybe its rattaling, i pulled the e brake while it was jacked up and that tire still moves a little, and it makes a clicking noise when i move it but only when the e brake is on so im thinking its the drum brake isnt tight enough

B's Legacy Wagon
03-04-2010, 11:10 PM
Not to much help. but to me the noise sounded like a ratling like a heat shield. it seems like you got it isolated to part of the car that should not have to many moving parts rather than say engine compartment. can you replacate the sound at slow speeds. maybe find a controlled enviroment like a huge parking lot and see if you can reproduce it if so. do you have any friends that could lay on the floor board and stick there head out a rear door and maybe peak under there while your driving? definatly try and do this in a very safe manner.
I worked at a body shop for years and some times after a wreck there would be weird noises after a car was suppossed to be completly fixed we used to do this all the time(in controlled enviroment) with mirror maybe to see underneeth.or carcorder on a pole Etc. sorry not alot of logical ideas from me just thowing out ideas.
keep us updated..

98outbackpdx
03-05-2010, 02:41 AM
+1 to the rocks in the heat shield, i have them in my heat shield on my 98 outback, and i my mom had it on her 2008 legacy 2.5i ltd (RIP.) your 2.5 gt has rear drum? all of the 2.5gt that i have seen all have rear disc.

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 02:39 AM
it has rear disc and a drum inside the disc, its coming from right infront of the rear passenger tire and theres no heat shield under there. i can get it to do it ALOT when im driving in the mountians and go around a curve down hill, my friend stuck his head out the door and tried to figure it, he said its coming from right before the tire not really the tire, and he sat in the trunk to see if maybe it was the shocks or springs and it wasnt. it sounds almost like your draging a big piece of plastic

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 02:52 AM
i bet your tires are under inflated
when your tires are under inflated they make a grinding noise on the ground. like nails on a chalkboard.
you should also check your tail-light fluid. its a common problem with subarus. people always forget to keep the head/tail light fluid full. infact every subaru i have seen is out of the stuff....

d1giPhux

edit: because I'm an idiot and didn't know there WAS such a thing as 'disk-drum' brakes.

Disk:

http://www.budsautomotiveservice.com/images/Disk_Brakes.jpg

Drum:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/03/0705ch_01_zrefurbishing_drum_brakes-1.jpg

Inside of the drum brake:

http://www.kwik-fit.com/assets/jpg/graphics/drum-brakes_large.jpg

It still sounds to me like something is rubbing possibly.. like the dust shield on the rear brakes, or possibly that your axles are bad. Which axles did you have replaced?

Also.. like stated, check your tires. They could be under inflated, or the lug bolts could be coming loose. I know it sounds extremely stupid.. but tighten them up as much as possible.. and give it a go! Could be less complex then anticipated!

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 12:25 PM
it has disc brakes and if you take the rear disc brake off it has a drum parking brake inside of it witch is held togather by srings, heres a pic i found http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/218/43449033.png (http://img294.imageshack.us/i/43449033.png/) its all held togather by springs i think maybe one of them broke or something

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 02:15 PM
it has rear disc and a drum inside the disc

How familiar are you with working on cars? Because what you just said.. that makes NO sense. You either have rear disk brakes, or rear drum brakes. If the car is a GT.. it has the disks. If its an L or something else like that.. it may have rear drum. Here is the difference:

how familiar are YOU with working on cars. cuz i know exactly what he is talking about. my s-10 has disc drum.
the brakes are disc, but on the inside of the disc is a drum set up, usually for the emergency brake use.
its not all that uncommon. in 99 outback also has the same thing.
here is a diagram to help u along...

wow.. never in my life ever seen those.. definitely a new one to me! thanks! thats weird as hell.. why do they make them like that? so what is it classified as.. disk.. or drum? or do they actually call it a disk drum brake? very weird.. glad to learn something new!

So does it only use the drum for parking brake and such?

Also.. did you in fact check your lugs? Because it COULD be that.. I actually had a friend who was hearing noises like that.. and I thought it was the axle too.. and it was his lugs not being tightened all the way.

yea your correct. its classified as a disc and the drum is just for the parking brake.

I've worked on Imprezas, Legacys and Foresters, but all the ones with rear discs had, as you say, "disc drum" rear brakes.

wow.. never in my life ever seen those.. definitely a new one to me! thanks! thats weird as hell.. why do they make them like that?

I have never in my life seen a parking brake that does NOT use a drum. But then again I only wrench on Subarus and GM vehicles these days.

Disc brakes require hydraulics to operate. Parking brakes need to operate even when the car is off (and therefore has no hydraulic pressure)

Edit: I just looked it up and some cars DO have parking brakes that are physically attached to the calipers. Also just remembered that very large vehicles (like school busses) have hydraulic parking brakes but perhaps they default to engaged or something when vaccuum pressure is lost. Only remember this because one time I was riding in a school bus as something failed and the bus came to a stop and was unable to move more than 2 mph because the brake was stuck on and the driver was unable to release it.

Anyway, back to the question, I think it's just a design choice whether to use the drum or attach the brake to the caliper. I suppose having both provides better redundancy which is part of the point of the parking brake anyway.

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 03:47 PM
ive never seen these before either i thought it was wierd so all subarus dont have this? i tightend my lug nutz down tight and i checked my air pressure both r good, my mustang had disc parking brakes, i still cant figure it out im going to put it on a big lift at my cousins junk yard and check everything, its hard to do it with jus jack stands you now wat i mean

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 03:57 PM
sometimes the parking brake doesnt disengage and will eventually make noises. but ive only seen that once or twice. and it was on a ford escort if i remember right. i would put it up on a lift and put it in gear and walk around it to see exactly where its coming from...
i am stumped tho.
does anyone else think it MIGHT be the viscus cup in the trans?

i think your right with the hydralic pressure thing, and also i think another reason they used this design is because if your brakes fail you have something to help you stop. personally i like the design, its better than some others that i have seen.

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 04:04 PM
i put it on jack stands and ran it and it made no noise

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 04:12 PM
i put it on jack stands and ran it and it made no noise
then in that case, i bet its a suspension/chassis issue.
cuz if it is coming from the back, its probably not the engine or trans.
and if it makes noise when your driving but not on jack stands, the only difference in those two is the fact that the
suspension is not compressed when its on the jack stands. so that leads me to believe it to be a chassis or suspension issue.
or perhaps your wheels were not spinning fast enough to make the noise. i say have a friend bring the speed up to the speed that it occurs at.

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 04:13 PM
also did u check the wheel bearings?

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 04:30 PM
wheel bearings and cv axles are brand new, and so are brake pads, my wife got it up to 80 on jack stands and i listendand it made no noise at any speen, i think it has something to do with a rubber bushing on something under there, i checked everything i could check but all i did was shack it and see it it makes noise or is loose is there a way to check it without takin shit apart again? im thinking its wat the lateral link bolt connects to cause it goes from the knuckle to right under the seat witch is where it sounds like its coming from

lord flashheart
03-06-2010, 06:12 PM
wait. one more idea for the running it on the jackstands. put it up on jack stands, then use your floor jack to compress the suspension.then see if it is the suspension. do that with both sides. if it still doesn't make any sounds then its gotta be suspension parts.

part of doing diagnostic test are being thorough. so dont give up on finding that little SOB

d1giPhux
03-06-2010, 11:16 PM
you guys are confusing the hell out of me. if that inner drum brake is just for the e-brake (like it is), then isnt the system still a disk brake system? I mean why the hell does the drum brakes for the e-brake have anything to do with what its named?

legacy98gt
03-06-2010, 11:38 PM
i think im gona try putting pressure on the suspension and see wat it does like you said, thats the only thing i can think of if it dont work im just gona have to turn my stereo up cause i cant figure it out

There is no load on the drivetrain when you are on jackstands. It could still be a drivetrain issue, but the absence of a load on the system may make the sound disappear.

legacy98gt

i think it may be time for the shop, i wonder wat there gona charge and if they can even figure it out, ill prolly have to take it to the stealership

thats what i was saying. he is going to put the car up on jackstands, then he is going to use a floor jack to compress the rear suspension by putting the jack under the rear hub assembly. that way the wheel can turn freely all while the suspension is compressed.

Thats not what I mean. When the wheels are spinning freely, whether or not the suspension is compressed there is no load on the drivetrain. If the issue is drivetrain related (i.e. driveshaft, rear diff, etc.) then removing the normal amount of load on the wheels by having them off the ground may make the sound go away. No strain may equal no sound. Just my $0.02.

legacy98gt
03-07-2010, 01:14 AM
wat else could it be if its not the wheel bearings, cv axle, and differential? i now it cant be the transmission cause its no coming from the middle of the car its most deffinitaly coming from the right rear and still makes noise in nutrual so transmission is ruled out too, the only other thing i can think of is drum brakes and some kind of rubber bushing somewhere

lord flashheart
03-07-2010, 01:45 AM
I watched the video and It's gotta be the u joints. If it's not your u joints I'll give up and kill my self

legacy98gt
03-07-2010, 01:51 AM
how do i check that? it kinda makes sense since it only does it when i let off the gas but i moved my driveshaft by hand and it doesnt make any noise or jiggle in any way

lord flashheart
03-07-2010, 02:17 AM
if its warn out it would jiggle or move in some direction.. on monday ill talk to my buddy at the subie dealer and see if he has any ideas and get a exploded view of the rear end.
but i also watched the video again and it almost sounds like a rattling sound.. perhaps its just the cam but have u considered your struts? just a thought.
anyways. if you havent found it by monday ill talk to my buddy and get a diagram posted.

legacy98gt
03-07-2010, 07:35 AM
cool hanks, i thought it may be my struts but there only a couple months old and it theres no sound in the trunk where the struts are so im not sure

wow this is so complicated, sorry this is happening to you. but maybe it will give you peice of mind by posting on here, some day you may help another member if this where to happen to them. Also i hate to think how long it will take the stealership to figure this out. maybe by doing all these steps to figure it out on your own it will cut down the hours/bill from the dealer? I have no more ideas for ya but please keep us posted. i will keep following this one, best of luck to ya.

legacy98gt
03-08-2010, 02:11 PM
well i got some new struts and springs form a 04 wrx and im gona ut em in sometime this wee so im going to look at everything under there and see if it is my struts

lord flashheart
03-08-2010, 04:45 PM
ok so i talked to my buddy. and got a diagram. i got some ideas for you. let me scan this in and ill post it and tell you what he said

lord flashheart
03-08-2010, 04:55 PM
so he told me it sounds like:
A) the viscus cup. to check it go to a parking lot and do some tight Figure 8s if it feels like the diff locks up and realeases i.e. hoping
then you know its the viscus.
B) a chipped tooth on the ring gear or pinion. to check it get a flashlight and look in thru the fill hole, turn the drive line slowly to check if any of the teeth are chipped.
C)wheel bearing. when i told him it makes noise when driving but not on jackstands he said that sounds like wheel bearings
D) u joints. but i told him you checked them.
E)CV axles. but i told him you got new ones.

i got an exploded view of the rear chassis parts. if you want ill post it.

legacy98gt
03-08-2010, 08:55 PM
cool thanks, i dont think i need a diagram but if you esnt to posty it i will, if it had a chiped tooth wouldnt there be shavings in the fluid? i changed it and it was clean as a whistle, no shavings or anything, and the wheel bearings are also new, it was making the noise and i thought it was the wheel bearings and i chanhged them and it still makes the noise and i checked the wheel bearings by pulling the tire side to side to see if theres any free play and theres not and it spins freely and smooth. how do i check that cup thing is there a different way? how do i tell if it locks up?

lord flashheart
03-08-2010, 09:14 PM
A chipped tooth doesn't always leave shavings
and the Viscus cop is the thing in the transmission that allows the front wheels and the back wheels to spin at different speeds durring turns and it's also the reason you have to replace all the tires at the same time. When they get worn out they don't spin smoothly. So when you make slow tight turn it catches and doesn't let the wheels spin at different speeds I.e. The tires are attempting to spin at the same speed witch makes the car feel like it's hopping and slipping on the assphalt

legacy98gt
03-09-2010, 01:30 AM
ill have to give it a try tomorow

legacy98gt
03-09-2010, 10:28 PM
ok i tryed the figure 8 thing i didnt notice anything different no slipping or anything but i didnt exacly now wat to do, i didnt check the teeth yet its cold outside ill wait till it warms up, for now im just gona turn up the radio

lord flashheart
03-09-2010, 11:08 PM
ok then its not your viscus.
and that sounds like a good idea

legacy98gt
03-09-2010, 11:15 PM
theres only like one more thing it can be and thats the springs so im just gona replace em when my lowering springs and wrx struts come in and see wat hapens i hope they get here soon

Lone_legacy

I don't want to seem rude or discouraging but stechs have been discussed at length on the majority of subaru forums as there are an overwhelming number of people who have had problems with them. Thats why they are so cheap. I nearly purchased a similar setup not long ago, but got some good advice from some people on this forum.

My thread:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15564 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15564)

NASIOC's official s-tech FAQ thread:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ight=stech (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1267918&highlight=stech)

On the other hand you did get a killer deal, so you might as well see how you like them. And on another positive note the car will look great because it will be slammed. They will drop you more than 2 inches guaranteed.

Volvo had disk/drum back in 1968 on the rear... I remember because I hated working on the brakes on my 1970 142... And yes, they are for the E-brake/parking brake.... :smt023

I would look at the axles. Also take a look at your carrier bearing for the drive line. My dads Fiat had that problem and also my lifted Toyota disintegrated 3 of them (till I upgraded the drive line) and had and interesting sound to them.... :smt009

its still makng the same noise and its getting worse, now its making a grinding noise too and the car wobles right when you take off almost like the brake on that side is holdiong it back i checked all the brakes ,wheel bearings, cv axles, drive line, and rear differential, and there all good, it runs just fine if i put the fwd fuse in, its quiet as can be, i thought it might be the discus cup but i guess my car doesnt have one any one else think they now wat it is?

the noise goes away if i put it in nutral so i think it might be the drive line or differential, i think im going to get a outback with a little less milage and a blown hg for 600 and just change out everything, if it still doesnt go away ill just part out the outback and get my money back, wat all do i need to change if i change my rear differential?

maybe time to sell it and buy a civic. my sister is not to far from you, she could pick it up from you...

why, oh why, would you not check your diff fluid/shavings etc.(maybe you already have, i dunno.) or otherwise eliminate that as an issue before you go buyin more subarus to destroy to get one running?

is the subaru your buying the same diff ratio as yours? if not..might be easier just to put your motor in that one.....

OR....dont just throw parts at stuff...

if you REALLY want to rule out your diff for noise...

go buy a cheap stethoscope from the autoparts store...

also buy a length of cheap vacuum line and an elec. eyelet that fits around a bolt on the rear diff(can also use a clamp/vice grips if strong enough)

modify clamp or elec. eyelet to slide into cheap vacuum line seal with RTV/caulk/etc.

slide other end onto stethoscope probe

drive around with stethoscope on......

listen....

if you get unusual noise..you have your problem. you can even determine the which bearing is going out by turning in circles...etc...

only takes about 15 minutes to make the tool and setup for the test...and you can attach it to other shit back there to figure it out....

if your REALLLY lazy and cheap, just use the hose without the stethoscope and hold it up to your ear while driving...wont be as effective as the stethoscope.

theres just no point in solving a car issue by thinkging its this...or this....or this...or this....and it gets frustrating and expensive.

find cheap ways to test things..especially on noises.

wana trade? after this pos car will never buy a subaru ever again, honda all the way, i already have a 91 acura that can easily beat this car, i have all new wheel bearings, cv alxes, brakes, differential fluid twice, the next step is to take the cover off of the differential and look at everything, i cant seem to see in the hole vary good, i dont want to put my motor in that one cause its an outback and i dont want an outback, its not like its hard to swap the trans and differential, its automatic so its not hard,

im sure an acura can beat a stock subaru...in a straight, paved line. lets go play in the mud...

so if you want to get rid of it, a subaru with an "unfixable maybe trans, maybe driveline, maybe suspension, maybe chassis issue" is only worth a few hundred bucks....

you sure there not a screw loose behind the wheel?
