My 04 Leg Automatic has this odd whiney sound when going in reverse. I first noticed it Saturday I haven't done any mods to it and there is nothing obvious from the previous owner. I bought the car in Nov and it now has 43k miles I've never heard this kind of sound before and am affraid to find out what and how expensive it is. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks

change auto fluid...see if it goes away - add Lubegard ATF Protectant as well.

check rear diff fluid as well.

reverse, who needs reverse?

Just do a 180

seriously though, do what huffer said. Does the sound respond to the steering wheel being turned at all?

Ok, I'll give that a shot.
Nope sound doesn't change when turning.

reverse, who needs reverse?

Just do a 360

A 360 would have him pointed in the same direction again...

Nope sound doesn't change when turning.

good, that means its not steering, its most definitely tranny.

question for you tranny people:

The Auto usually starts with a 90/10 power split...is it also a 90/10 power split when you're in reverse?

go to general discussion and the "let's clear something up" thread

The MT can go 90:10 either way, and the AT can go from 90:10, front:rear, to 50:50. The auto is also 50:50 in first and second gear. According to local techs.

50/50 in 1,2 and R

The MT cars are 50/50 all of the time. Subaru DCCD is adjustable, from 50/50 lock to 35/65 f/r. It's also got the auto-mode which chooses the best setting for the conditions.

If us Reps had moderating powers, I could fix that error in the posted thread.

I think what BB98 meant, was that the manual can change the power ration under slipping, but is 50/50 most of the time. What else is the center differential for?

4eat's are 50/50 in 1st, 2nd, and reverse.

Let's keep the discussion related to the original post. There are other threads dedicated to the torque split discussion.
