Swap or heavy ej22 mod?

Hey guys,

Im looking to see what path I should take to make my subie fast. Is it possible to SAFELY turbo an ej22 engine without damaging the engine at all? Or is it a better route to just swap for a wrx engine?

You can run 5-6 PSI on the EJ22 all day long, provided you have a better fuel pump, and a way to add more fuel. This can be down a lot more cheaply than a WRX swap, but the swap gives you the benefit of much better reliability down the road.

Yeah but running 5-6 lbs of boost wont really do much for you would it? and dropping 2k on a kit is pretty expensive for small gains.

The key to a reliable EJ22 turbo mod is engine management. You'll need a way to pull timing too, on top of the fuel mods.

5-6 lbs of boost is still pretty fast - off the line I ran side by side with a WRX and I'm only running 5-6 psi.

The WRX runs ridiculously low power for the boost it runs.

To me, if you are going to go through the trouble to turbocharge a car, you do it right the first time, or you drive around in a ticking time bomb. Not to step on anyone's toes, but just because someone says you can run 5-6psi on a bone stock EJ22 doesn't mean you should or that you will be driving a reliable car by doing that. 6 psi boost is increasing the engine air pressure at full throttle by almost 50%. So, you are kind of gambling that Subaru built the engine well enough to run up to 50% higher pressure than it was originally designed for, and that even if they did, is your 11+ year old engine still capable of doing that?

here are my thoughts. ej22s are a dime a dozen, its pretty easy to buy a good running motor for 100 bux. 100 bux is disposable money...

a nice turbo kit can be made for under $1000. for em all you really need is a rising rate FPR, to keep it alive. hey its not ideal but it works.

i guy i know in mn (AWDimprezaL) has had a boosted stock ej22 for over 3 years now. almost trying to kill the damn thing. all he has managed to kill is 3 turboes... he has been waiting for it to die so he actually has a reason to put in the ej22t block he has had for several years...

he has been making 201 whp 213 wtq for a long time now without any real issues.

and best part is if the motor lets go, its cheap to get another one.
