Hey guys. I was wondering how much torque/hp a 2.2L manual tranny and drivetrain from my 96 L wagon?
Also, can I move to to a 4.11 ratio while retaining the cable clutch? Even if I have to rip the gearbox and rear differential internals out of their housings, can it be done? I just like the feel of the cable better, and don't mind replacing it more often. As always, any feedback is welcomed.

Cars101.com has your car at 135hp/140tq at the crank. Subtract 25% due to drivetrain loss: 101.25hp/105tq at the wheels. That's when new, so you might have less now. As far as switching to 4.11FD, the 90-94 AWD Non-turbo wagons and sedans had 4.11 AND cable systems. That would prob be the easiest way. But I know you can swap a cable clutch system for hydraulic so it would seem logical you could go the other way also by retaining the cable-specific fork, etc.

I guess if that's my outputs from new, how much horsepower and torque do you think I can handle on the stock drivetrain, or the 90-94 4.11 drivetrain?

Hard to say, but people with turbo legacys have put upwards of 200whp through their NA transmissions.

@ mike it's more like a 30% loss the 2.2ls in stock form wont break 100 hp to the wheels...
and for an easy 4.11 drivetrain get one out from under a gt and the swap over your clutch fork

Not saying you're wrong, but what's your source? I've always seen a quoted 25% for 5mt (but can't find any quotes now that I'm looking for one!).

^ Don't need a source. Old 2.2L N/A Legacies are dogs, this is fact.

several of our stock 2.2 members have been dyno'd and have shown the 30% drivetrain loss
also 30% is the accepted loss @ nasioc, it does vary up and down +/-4% imho but we (sl-i) havent seen a stock awd 2.2 dyno over 100whp

So what's being said is the BD/BG/BK LGT will have a 4.11 setup? I was also expecting at least 35% drivetrain loss (FWD with 15% + RWD with 20% = AWD with 35%). Then power loss from an aged motor and drivetrain.

Like you said the dyno will vary, but we also haven't seen a dyno on a 0 mile car, either.
Original poster, sometimes a subaru with a 5-speed and the 2.5 motor will have 4.11 gearing. Best way is to find the sticker on the bellhousing of the tranny in question (TZXXXXXX or TYXXXXX) and use a decoder (get to that part when you have the code). Good sources of 4.11 cars from the 90s are 5-speed 96-2000 Outbacks and Legacy GT's (ALL).

Cool, sound like a plan. We have tons of Outbacks available up here. I guess my last question is if the gearbox out of a LGT or Outback will slip right into a L AWD bellhousing?

That's correct, they'll fit right in. You're looking for outbacks with the 2.5 motor (some had the 2.2, but all GT's had the 2.5). 1st Generation Forester will work as well (5mt has 4.11 FD also). Only thing I can think of that's different is the bellhousing for the newer trannys have more long bolts or studs than your motor, but not to worry, they'll still bolt up fine.
