Thinkin about trading my L in for a GT. Mines got 92,000 miles , 1997, auto, cloth, blah blah blah refer to viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16739 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16739)
unless someone on here would want to trade!

The GT is black with 120,000 , 5 sp, 1997, what doo you guys think i'd probably have to pay payments on it plus trade my car in.

A GT is a huge step up from an L. But you're right, you'll probably have to do payments, so is that worth it to you, since your current car is presumably paid off? Lastly, head gasket issues seem to appear sometime after the GT hits 100k miles, that's quite expensive if it lets go and this is your only form of transportation. Personally I'd go for the GT since I can do engine work, and I have a couple of cars if it goes out of commission for a week or two. Good luck!

no car is worth car payments = )

especially a 97gt.

i would stick with the L. maybe find some GT goodies somewhere. or something.

2.2 is a better motor if you ask me, easier to do work like timing belts etc.

not to mention NON INTERFERENCE.

i mean your have payments to go up how many hp/tq?(25-30?) GAIN 30,000 miles, and have a motor that if the timing belt goes, your effed.

Keep your L, fix up the motor with what you can and if you want a GT, just convert it with GT goodies. It'll make you that much more proud of your car anyhow. The only thing that would make me wanna go GT if I was in your position is the 5mt. I love 5mt to death and get bored driving 4eat, so thats a turning point for me.

Yeah, I put the GT's motor into my L, and my friend who has an 5mt RS commented "they really killed all the fun with that auto." I've always had this dream that I'll swap it, but I know that'll never happen.

ya i was kinda looking for the 5sp bored with 4eat. im got the gt bumper (if XxgtbspecxX ever ships it lol) n jdm fogs in my garage, but the 5sp is what would do it. kbb wise they are virtually the same value. i just need to get ahold of the 5sp somehow.

Looks like your answer to this problem ends in a 5 speed swap!! Not really that hard to do and could be done fairly cheap with some good manual labor.

This kinda question should be taken to the BODY & COSMETICS forum.
Interesting none the less.

well.....
in 97 the 2.2 became an interference motor, beside that you can squeeze stock gt power out of a 2.2 with cams and headers
custom long runner headers ~100 at a good local shop
universal high flow cat ~85 + shipping + 50 install
o2 spacer $5
cams 1000 or 1500 grind from delta ~200
light weight crank pulley ~80

i have all that sans the cams and am making around 155-160 at the crank compared to the stock 137hp, and if you want you can go high compression buy dropping a 2.5 shortblock in :D

Take into consideration that GT is about 1500 overpriced. And that odds are that you'll probably have to replace the head gaskets at some point while owning the GT.

Other than that, I love my GT. I bought it with an auto because it is really difficult to find GTLs around here with a 5spd (I never found one), let alone black ones in good shape. I swapped in a 5spd from an Impreza (has the 3.9 final drive) and it totally transformed the personality of the car. The Subaru auto really kills the car IMO.

did anyone notice that the front bumper is missing the fog lights in the pictures, i am betting there was previous damage.
also on carfax and autocheck not everything shows up. it has to be reported to the agencies, and for instance if someone wrecks their car and pays for it out of pocket that would not show up on a carfax or autocheck.

I don't think a car from 1997 is worth making payments on, especially when its not super different than the one you already have now.

post your tranny code, we'll be able to tell for sure that way but 0ff the top of my head it's 3.9 and the stock L trannies are 3.9

^^Stock 5mt "L" trannies are 3.9, you mean.
4eat would/should be 4.11. (mine is for 96)

But as grafton said, post your code.

Here's the holy grail for modding on a budget - don't MOD what you can buy stock. Unless you have gobs of cash, at some point it will come back to bite you in the rear.

the tranny code should be on the metal plate on the drivers side front strut tower
