Im planning on going to the local muffler shop and get 2.5 all the way back but I can't figure out what muffler to use....
Im trying to achive that BOXER RUMBLE...I KNOW Ive heard its hard with the ej22 (non-turbo) to get that rumble...
But I ve heard also with a good muffler+catback combo you can get a great sound???
Any suggestions would be appreciated...Thanks :smt006 :smt017

Magnaflow's are very good at getting a nice deep tone / rumble from the boxer engine..at least on the 2.5's. Not too sure about the 2.2's however.. but I'm assuming its a logical step in the right direction. That and headers.

I believe the older 2.2s (a 90 would be considered an older 2.2) had single ports and unequal length exhaust from the factory, so it probably already has the "subaru sound" but is just being muffled by the exhaust system.

2.5" is too big for your application. 2.25" max, although anything over 2" is probably a waste.

A good quality resonator and muffler will be your friend. The subaru sound is generated by turbulence caused by the exhaust pulses from each bank hitting each other at what basically amounts to the "wrong" time. Turbulence causes a raspy sound. You can help smooth the flow by using smaller diameter piping (2" would be plenty for that engine, I promise) and good quality resonator and muffler will take the harsh edge off the sound.

2.25"

Vibrant mufflers are good and magnaflow

would borla headers work on his application/older model. also i have heard good recomendations on either borla or magnaflow exhausts. had a great magna flow system set up on a pick up truck once so i can vouch for the excellent workmanship and sound there. was currious about the statment above about the 2.5" piping being a waste? is it causing a back presure problem or just no benefit from 2.5 vs a 2.25"? just asking as i got a 2000 legacy wagon BH and think it the 2.2L non-turbo so wasnt sure if i was in same situation as the OP. thanks for any assistance.

Borla use to make single port headers they no longer do and there hard to find.

The 2.2 and 2.5 liter EJ engine don't flow enough exhaust gasses to use anything larger than a 2.25" or 2.5" exhaust at most other wize the exhaust flow slows down and just sits in the pipe and you loose tq. If your are planning on doing cams a 2.5" is good if you are going turbo id go with 3" but just an exhaust idk stick with a 2.25".

the nice thing about the single ports is you can get a custom header made if you go to the right shop..

look in my rides thread for pics of mine

omg u guys! first gens DID NOT have single port heads.

if you want the rumbles get a cheap unequal length header off ebay.

and yes i wouln't bother goin larger than 2.25" on a 2.2l. heck i wont even go over 2.5" with my 3.3l.
