So, it occurred to me that I've never really posted any pictures of my car (and certainly haven't started one of these threads). I just recently took some pics and figured I'd start a thread.

So, this is my 98 Legacy GT Limited. Bought it bone stock with about 150k miles on it in June 2009. 6 days after I bought it, it blew a head gasket on a back road. :mad: Had a friend drive out with about 4 gallons of water, limped it back home (only about 5 miles). Pulled the engine and re-sealed the entire thing. Since then, I have done...

EXTERIOR
* J-spec headlights, cleared and retrofitted with FX-R bixenon projectors and OE HID bulbs and Matsushita (Panasonic) ballasts
* J-spec taillights, cleared
* All exterior lights replaced with LEDs (except for headlights and fog lights)
* Rewire fogs to be allowed on with park or head lights
* Grill painted black
* 35% Tint

DRIVETRAIN
* Snorkus and "torque" box delete
* OBX EL Header and cat delete (soon to get replaced with HF cat)
* Worx Tuning Lightweight crank pully
* Stock 4EAT trans replaced with 3.9 final drive 5-spd and matching rear diff
* Exedy Clutch

INTERIOR
* Stereo replaced with Kenwood HU, Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 speakers in custom designed boxes, and Precision Power A1200.4 amp
* Cheezy fake woodgrain bits replaced with gunmetal colored bits (I'll probably get beat for that)
* Black leather replaced with 98 RS Black/grey seats (yay bolsters!)

WHEELS/BRAKES/SUSPENSION
* Tein Flex Coilovers
* OB Rear swaybar
* Hawk HPS brake pads
* BBS Forged Aluminum wheels from an 04 STI, powdercoated bronze
* P225/50-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport Tires

That's all I can think of for now. I've done some other little things, since I like to tinker with things, but I don't always remember what I've done lol. The wheels in these pics are 18x7.5" Enkei RS-Vs with a +45mm offset. The tires are 235-40-18 Falken FK452s. I didn't list them in the mods because they are left over from my previous car and will only be on the car temporarily. They do rub in the back, but because the suspension is fairly stiff, they only rub if I hit a giant bump or if I hit a bump in the middle of a hard corner. They have since been replaced by STI wheels (see page 2)

I'm focusing mainly on getting the appearance of the car right now and taking care of a select bit of performance parts (mainly suspension) because my ultimate goal is to get either a EJ255 or 257 (most likely the 255) and build it for reliable, high power operation, swap it in with a good turbo with good response (probably an 18G or 20G, I've had good experience in the past with Mitsubishi-based turbos) and supporting mods, and then eventually get the STI 6-spd, R180 rear diff, hubs, axles, brakes, etc, and have basically an STI killer. My friend has an 04 STI with basic mods, and my goal is to beat his car in every aspect :) So, there it is.

Thanks for looking

Damn our black LGTs look good polished! Very nice car for that type of mileage. I have 160,000 on the body and 93,000 on the motor. You never got the dreaded rear wheel well rust?

I am liking the 18s too, but I am going to go with the 17s. Maybe bbs or something along those lines.

Me too. I haven't been to any meets yet, so seeing modified Legacies is still a pretty novel thing to me. There is a black one with a WRX swap (haven't met the guy, but I've seen his car a few times), a red one with a full STI swap (as long as he hasn't parted it out yet, he was talking about it) and a white L that actually came into my shop a while back. But yeah, other than that...

Details on the wheels?

I didn't realize that the jspec headlights (and taillights) had the orange globes in them until I actually got my hands on a set, I just thought they were orange bulbs. So first thing I did after getting them was pull them apart and pull those pieces out. I also replaced the rear turn signals with red LEDs so they flash red. Looks a lot better than the orange. The front ones still flash orange, but because of how they are wired, the turn signals are only turn signals, not park/turn. The "city lights" are my park lights and they are white LEDs. So it doesn't look too bad :)

Lol when I got the car I actually thought it was black, because both times I'd gone to look at the car it was cloudy, and the metallic flake only really shows up in the direct sunlight. I actually purposely took 2 sets of pics this last time, one on the light, one in the shade, and it looks like a completely different color. But I was pleasantly suprised, this is a fairly unique color.

Lol well I'm digging your custom 8-spd trans... :)

Yeah I really jumped on this car when I found it, despite the fact that I said I would never buy and automatic. I'd been looking for a while, and this was the overall best one I found. Its pretty nice for its age. Rust is pretty rare for cars less than 25yrs old around here because they don't salt the roads in the NW. We are pretty lucky in that regard, makes the cars last longer and makes them SOOO much easier to work on.

The 18s don't look too bad, but I wouldn't choose them for this car. They are left over from my Mazdaspeed3 that I sold to get this. I'll probably get STI wheels as well, since I know they fit, and I know they'll clear the Brembos.

Thanks everyone!

The physical conversion from at to mt was pretty simple, but there are a lot of little parts you need to make sure you get. I'm not sure I could even list them all, I learned from prior experience that it is better to just get a parts car for stuff like this, so that all the little parts are already there, otherwise they nickel and dime you. The issue I'm running into now is the fact that my parts car was a bit older and had a cable driven speedo, whereas our cars use speed sensors. So now I'm trying to track down the speed sensors I need and where they go. If you were to get the 5spd from the same model as car as you have (right down to the same engine, my trans came from a 2.2) it would be easier and you probably wouldn't have some of these issues.

thats cool, i was doing research, i found that if i dont do it right the rear tires are going to spin at a diferent speed than the front ones, is that right?

As long as you get a trans from the same generation, model and trim (i.e. 95-99 Legacy L or GT, which ever you have) you should be OK.

ohh thats a good advice, i was kinda scared about doing it, is not easy for me just to sell my car and buy a 5 speed one, i done to much to my car to selling it, so ill try to change trans... i was thinking it was harder to do it

Thanks, its called black granite pearl. AFAIK the BD GT was not available in just plain black, this is as close at it gets. Just looks black most of the time. :)

Besides in the sunlight. Kind redish purple to me. When I buff and wax the flake really comes out with mine.

What are you using for wax? Your looks really wet!

ouch1011
03-03-2010, 01:03 AM
It actually needs to be waxed again. :) I use "Poorboys" products, they were suggested on another forum as a good budget minded but very effective product. Versitile too, I've used them to polish painted body surfaces, clear plastic like headlights or taillights.

Picked up a set of BBS STI wheels. They were in pretty sad looking shape when I got them so they were cheap, but they were not bent or cracked so they were still usable. Had them stripped, fixed the curb rash and powdercoated and got them back yesterday.

I went with some friends' suggestions and got them in bronze. I'm still a bit unsure about the color, but I think they'll look good on the car.

Yeah I can't wait to see pics with the BBS on the car, the color doesn't look too great by themselves but I think that they will look awesome with the dark color of your car and you will be different than all the usual colors people have for their BBS wheels

Very nice, you are lucky to get the black granite pearl AND limited trim that paints the lips. i like how you didn't buy the L7 grill and just painted it black (did the same thing). IMO good choice of wheels, but you need to go whiter since your headlights and taillights are so cleared out. Tint?

What do you mean whiter?

Make your wheels a lighter color to compensate with the bright headlight and taillights. Just my opinion.

Ah, re-opened at last. Remember kids, be sure to follow the rules or your thread will get locked too.

They look huge, don't they? They are actually only 1 step bigger than the stock STI tire size, 225/50-17. They ended up looking bigger than I thought they would, but I wanted to fill out the fender wells a bit more without lowering the car any more. I think I'll go with with the 225/45-17s next time. I don't mind the look, but the change in made on the total axle ratio combined with the fact that I'm already running a 3.9 final drive instead of the 4.11 makes the car feel a bit too slow. And since I'll probably burn through these tires before I replace the engine...
