This past weekend, my OEM security systems siren quit working. When I lock/unlock my doors, the lights flash and the doors lock, but the siren no longer beeps. The keyless works fine, and so does the alarm. If I set it off, the lights flash as they did when the alarm was going off, but no siren. When I lock the doors, the alarm arms itself and everything like normal. The red warning light on the dash flashes as always, just no siren.

Anyone ever have this problem?

Think its just the siren that is bad?

Anyone know if there is a way I could test the siren to see if it functions or not other then on the car?

Is there a alarm control unit somewhere that might be bad also? I wouldnt figure this is the problem due to the alarm functioning just fine other then the siren.

If the siren isn't working, then it's probably dead. Buy a cheap replacement and wire it in. Easy!
You've already really tested it, but you could try removing it and hooking it up to a battery to see if it makes any sound.

did you also check to see if your car was in valet mode, if you look on the back of yoru keyless entry there are instructions to make your car honk when locking/unlocking. I turned my off due to my nieghbor hating hating me locking and unlocking my car at night lol

I thought that was just the newer cars? That you could turn off the beeping? Mine doesnt honk the horn anyways, the alarm always chirped.

You can turn the alarm beep / honk on or off by pressing and holding both buttons on your remote. Or at least thats how it works on my BD Legacy. Just hold both of them down till it makes noise, or goes silent.

That sets my alarm off. Its the panic mode.

Its supposed to.. you have to keep holding it I'm pretty sure. Its worked on both of my BD's that ive owned in the past and turns the chirp on/off. Yours is the stock system correct? Hmm.. maybe thats only for keyless entry. Not sure. But i know its something along those lines and will allow you to turn the lock beep on / off.

check this page for more info about model specific stuff:

edit:

This is from the Alpine Remote Instructions (I'm assuming yours is the 'alpine' model like mine):

3. Honking horn?
On 1999-2002 models the horn honks once for lock and twice for unlock, 3 times if a door is not closed. This audible honk feature is optional. To turn it off or to turn it on unlock all the doors and hold *both* buttons down until the horn honks once. The horn will always honk 3 times if a door is not fully closed when you lock it.
This was changed in 2003, models to a 'chirp'. There is no longer an audible honk feature. If a door is ajar the system will chirp 5x and the lights flash.

the 1999 and newer systems has a complete different remote then a 1997.
the 1997 and 1998 have a rectangular remote and a 1999 and newer have a roundish remote.
in the 1999 and newer versions you push both the lock and unlock buttons to put it into valet mode. i have no idea on the 1998 and older remotes mine is a 1998 and i still cannot figure out how to make it stop chirping, and yes the 1998 and older remotes if you hold down both the lock and unlock the alarm will sound.

hmm.. yeah, seems like on the older squarish looking ones you cant turn the honk on / off.. or at least according to cars101:

The siren on my RS hasn't worked since I got it. I like it that way, don't need everybody to know that I locked my doors. And the immobilizer still functions. Thats the most important part anyway.
