Code reader... Scanner... Differences?

Have a 01 lgt, going to get a reader for my Subaru. What is the huge difference in scanner and code reader? Do I really need a scanner or just a reader? What should I get and why? Just going to mod a little and get some codes due to hf cats, header and some other mods.

a code reader will do just that. read codes.

a scanner will give you alot of data, sensor readouts, feul trim, freeze frame data, etc.

i would save up for a scantool. lot more handy.

Thanks, i found a auto xray ez 1000 that is updated for only $40 new from a local shop. But i see Auto Xray has some nice scanners. I think i will save for one...
